Today, we've launched the new, improved Guardian Social Enterprise Network. Be one of the first to take a look.

We've taken the best of the old UnLtdWorld platform – acquired from UnLtd in March 2011, (read the full article on the acquisition) and merged it with the Guardian's own social enterprise network and we hope it will be the best online community for social enterprise and social entrepreneurs in the UK and beyond.

The new site has lots of new functions and features including:

a personal profile feature – where you can tell the world who you are and what you do
a tailored dashboard – view content and social enterprises relevant to your interests
a free company profile – get listed in the new online social enterprise directory, sponsored by O2, connect with both users and customers and find partners

Logging in

We have transferred your UnLtdWorld profile to the new site, so you don't need to do anything to become a member and can use the new and improved site straight away.

If you can't remember your password, you can simply reset on the log in page.

Once you've logged in, you can edit your profile, change your password, leave comments on articles, and take part in live Q&As.

What's more, if you run a business, you can also register for a free company profile which will be displayed in what we believe will be the biggest online social enterprise business directory. This profile will increase your visibility to customers, commissioners and potential collaborators - find out more.

Excitement is brewing, food will be stewing and people will be queueing at TPS as we brew up, and later queue up for the next TPS Beer Night on Friday, February 3rd, 9pm-11pm! Tickets are £7 in advance and £10 at the door and include two locally brewed beers and a hearty bowl of stew. Space is limited so buy your tickets now! When's the last time you partied in the aisles of a supermarket?

While you're in the shop of course then you can take advantage of the latest special offers; the new TPS Recipe Calenders which are available now for £5 at the till, and a whole new range of organic produce. Special offers this January still include pasta, curry paste and sugar. Don't forget Members get 20% off when they work 4 hours per month in the shop so join now! The Man in Seat 61 - tonight!

This is an event going on round the corner, at SOAS on Russell Square, organised by one of our members, and open to the public. Mark Smith - better known as The Man in Seat 61 - is a travel writer and creator of the award-winning website seat61.com. This website is a goldmine for info on how to reach the far corners of the world - without flying. In this talk, he'll be looking at why overland travel has grown (it's all about the journey!) and giving an overview of some of the most rewarding journeys, including Europe by rail, USA coast-to-coast and the Trans-Siberean. It's tonight (Thursday 26th January) at 7.30pm, room G2, SOAS Russell Square campus, and there are free drinks. The talk lasts about an hour - contact Elliot on 07986 882 690 for more info.

Australia Day - Thursday 26th Jan
Australia Day 2012 takes place on Thursday 26th January with celebrations all over London to pay tribute to our neighbours in the southern hemisphere that are scattered all across the capital. Get yourself in the mood for some true partying, Aussie style, at The People’s Supermarket Australia Day London Event. Don’t worry if you don’t happen to be Australian – rest assured you’ll be welcomed with open arms.

TPS Beer Night on Friday, February 3rd, 9pm-11pm!
There's lots of excitment brewing at TPS as we gear up for the next TPS Beer Night on Friday, February 3rd, 9pm-11pm! The night will feature beers from local breweries - Redchurch Brewery, Meantime, Fuller's, Sambrook's and Brodie's - and beer stew made on the premises by our very own John Batho (The People's Kitchen). Join us for another great party in the aisles.
Tickets are £7 in advance and £10 at the door. Each ticket includes 2 bottled beers (or bottle of other non-alcoholic beverage)and a hearty bowl of John Batho's stew (vegetarian or meat). Space is limited so buy your tickets now! See you all there!

Organic Fruit and Vegetables Now Available at TPS!
Exciting news for all those who've been patiently waiting...and waiting...Starting on Monday January 23rd 2012 the shop began to sell a complete new range of organic produce: From exquisite Italian grown sun drenched lemons to dusty Devon potatoes and colourful Lancashire Rainbow carrots. Beansprouts, chickpea sprouts, and even brussel sprouts will soon be on your menu! Take a glance on your way in at the neatly packaged fresh herbs, among which sage, rosemary and thyme number just a few, and then on your way out - be sure to get your five-a-day portions from amongst the Swiss chard, Savoy cabbage, and Lancashire leeks. Make a hot-pot with Devon parsnips, large white onions, garlic and Remarka potatoes, and have a go at a mushroom risotto with the beautifully presented mushrooms on display. For those who are keen on beetroot there is the most amazing Lancashire beetroot ever to be seen, limes, fresh oregano and dill for the cordon bleu cooks, oranges for the thirsty, and apples for those who can't wait to bite into something crisp and healthy! Happy eating and even more happy cooking!

Locally Grown Fruit and Vegetables

This spring TPS will be bringing you locally grown fruits and vegetables. In March we'll havers cucumbers, yellow and green peppers and in April there'll be red peppers, Ramiros and tomatoes including Heritage tomatoes delivered from The Coronation Nursery. TPS will also be stocking chillies, salad potatoes, aubergines, onions, garlic, beetroot and radish to name a few, so keep your eyes peeled instore!

TPS Vacancy – Part-Time Duty Manager

The Duty Manager role at The People’s Supermarket is a dynamic position. Duty managers are responsible for overseeing all activity on the shop floor as well as managing staff, members and volunteers who may be on shift. General responsibilities include maintaining the appearance of the shop, coordinating tasks, ensuring that work is completed in a satisfactory manner, and developing a team ethic among staff, members and volunteers. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication and organizational skills as well as management experience. Retail experience is desirable but not required. More important is an understanding and appreciation for the unique mission of The People’s Supermarket. Applicants should be prepared to work early mornings, late nights and weekends, in accordance with the hours of the shop.

Rate of Pay: £7.50/hr -- Hours: 20-25 per week

A Thank You Note from d.light

d.light would like to thank you, our newsletter subscribers, for continuing to support our mission to deliver clean, safe and cost-effective solar energy to the 2.6 billion people in the world who don't have access to reliable grid electricity.

We feel especially honored that many of you took the time to advise us by completing the newsletter survey we sent in November. We have learned a great deal from your suggestions, which included calls for more stories about our customers, new partnerships and new hires. We will include those stories in subsequent newsletters.

In the meantime, we thought we'd start off our newsletter for 2012 with a wrap-up of 2011. To sum it up, 2011 was a year of growth and expansion across the company.

Top Talent Leads to Year of Growth

d.light secured top talent from around the world, accelerating our efforts to transform the lives of 100 million people by 2020. In all, d.light added almost three dozen highly qualified professionals to our global team.

In addition to Chairman and CEO Donn Tice, last year d.light welcomed Roy Ricommini, Vice President of Product Development; Chester Chen, Vice President of Operations; David Small, Managing Director, Africa; and Tim Rump, Director of Marketing, Africa. d.light's senior management team brought decades of experience in consumer goods at companies like Motorola, Apple Computer, Unilever, Philips, and Colgate Palmolive, which made 2011 one of the best years in our company's history, achieving record sales.

d.light founders Ned Tozun and Sam Goldman remain at the company as President, and Chief Customer Officer, respectively.

New Products, New Distribution

To better serve our customers, d.light added a barrier-busting product in mid-2011 to its product line: the S1. The S1 is one of the world's most affordable solar lanterns. The product combines d.light's high quality with extreme affordability, making it an excellent value for off-grid families.

In addition to expanding our range of products to meet customer needs, d.light significantly expanded its distribution network in 2011, making it even easier for people living without access to reliable grid power to find clean, safe and cost-effective off-grid energy.

d.light's Opens Africa Regional Headquarters

In May 2011, d.light opened a new sales and marketing office in Nairobi, Kenya, to serve our customers and partners throughout the entire continent of Africa. Under the leadership of Managing Director David Small, the office has become an important frontline in d.light's quest to bring clean, affordable and renewable lighting to Africa, where more than 70 percent of people don’t have access to reliable electricity.

d.light Featured in 'A History of the World' and 'Top 30 Social Entrepreneurs'

Ranging from inclusion in A History of the World in a 100 Objects to a feature on the NPR's Marketplace, 2011 marked another banner year for d.light in the media. One of the highlights was seeing d.light founders Sam Goldman and Ned Tozun on Forbes' list of top 30 social entrepreneurs "who are changing the world." d.light Wins Spark Award; Finalist for Zayed Future Energy Prize

In October, d.light won a prestigious Spark design award for our new product, the S1. Just last week, d.light was honored as a finalist in the 2012 Zayed Future Energy Prize, which was awarded at the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. We are honored to have been on a list of amazing finalists, alongside winners Carbon Disclosure Project, Orb Energy, and Environmental Defense.

Community Capital Management Joins the GIIN Investors' Council

Community Capital Management, Inc. (CCM) is a registered investment adviser that manages fixed income impact investing portfolios. Its primary goal is to produce above-average, risk-adjusted returns while benefitting the community and the environment. CCM uses a proactive, positive screen for impact investments by investing in high credit quality bonds that support community development. It offers investors two impact investment products – the CRA Qualified Investment Fund and separately managed accounts – both which employ the same integrated two-prong impact investing strategy. Institutional clients include pension funds, foundations, religious organizations, banks, not-for-profits, and insurance companies.

Investor Spotlight: Community Capital Management

New IRIS Resource Online

Collecting & Reporting Poverty Data: Using the Progress out of Poverty Index Toolkit with the Impact Reporting and Investment Standards, is a new white paper by the IRIS initiative and the Grameen Foundation, which commissioned the development of the Progress out of Poverty Index (PPI) Toolkit. Investors and organizations can learn how to leverage the PPI Toolkit and IRIS to measure, track, and report the number of poor beneficiaries served.

Largest Cohort Yet Begins in Rwanda

Cohort 4 is our largest yet with 51 dynamite learners! What an incredible blessing to have an overflowing classroom. The class meets in a board room used by others during the day, so the room has to be rearranged every day before class starts. We have to add 15 chairs just to accomodate all of our learners. Our Open House after just one week was standing room only!

The first few days’ discussions were amazing. When Dr. Mulford asked the class what they believed the purpose of business was, virtually everyone gave some version of the economics textbook answer - an organization whose goal is to maximize profits. He gave them his "Business from the Heart" presentation, which is a neutral version of business guided by Holy Spirit, and the discussion was incredible! The next night many testified that their thinking had been totally changed. Dr. Mulford said he had never seen that many people make a 180-degree change in their thinking in one day. They are excited to continue to learn how to their faith in business to change the world.

We have some fantastic students in this cohort, including the former Vice-Mayor of Kigali. Momentum for the program is growing! Additionally, we have a number of bids in to offer training to some of the most prominent Rwandan companies. These opportunities came from the incredibly successful Leadership & Customer Care Seminar that we held in October. God's plans for the Rwanda BDC in 2012 might be bigger than we imagined!

In October, two Chick-Fil-A operators went to Rwanda to share their wisdom and experience with our entrepreneurs and to lead a 2-day seminar on Leadership and Customer Care. God was present! These videos are an absolute must-see!

Student Research Group Launches This Week

RCE is starting a new student-led research club called Kingdom Research Fellows. The club is will conduct research related to kingdom business and have a ton of fun while doing so. The Fellows will be publishing valuable research on the RCE website (and beyond) so keep your eyes peeled! The group already has over 15 Master's and Doctoral level students. God is doing incredible work to advance the kingdom business movement, and now students have the opportunity to be involved!

Have an interesting topic, idea, or experience? Share it with the Fellows! They will be doing interviews, case studies, and other first-hand research on kingdom business.

RCE covets prayers for the following areas:

Volunteer Consultants: We know that God has an incredible plan for this new program, but there are a number of hurdles that need to be overcome. Pray that God would choose the right mentors and oversee the matching process.

Continued Travel Mercies: With increased opportunities in Rwanda and around the world comes increased travel. Brittany is headed to Colombia next month to teach a seminar on integrating faith and entrepreneurship. We have facilitators flying in to be trained to open new BDCs. Pray that God will be in all the moving pieces.

Students: Dr. Mulford is teaching a course at Regent this semester on International Holistic Development which culminates with a trip to Rwanda. Pray for the students as they are beginning to develop projects to accomplish in Rwanda.

Announcing the RSF Impact Map

We are very pleased to announce the launch of the RSF Impact Map! This is a new feature of our website designed to share the work of the social enterprises we support. Using photos, video, and narrative this section of our website offers a snapshot of the innovative, impactful organizations that we are so proud to work with.

This marks the launch of the map but we won’t stop here! In 2011 alone, we supported hundreds of social enterprises through our lending, giving, and investment activities. Visit the map throughout the year as we will be adding new organizations on a quarterly basis. Interested RSF supported projects should contact us for more information on how to participate.

Announcements

Moving On

When I made the transition from TBN Partner to TBN staff in 2007 I committed to the role for 5 years. Nearly 5 years on, I feel I have reached by ‘best before’ date.

I am pleased to have been part of a movement that has successfully brought recognition to the value of “triple bottom line” business in alleviating poverty. And most importantly, lives have been changed. I have enjoyed my role and time at TBN, especially advising Members and Partners with their projects.

As for many organisations 2011 has been a tough year, but over the 5 years the number of projects and contacts have doubled. Our web site has developed into a resource centre with case studies and materials and we can interact via LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter (thanks in no small measure to Harrison). And internally a switch to Salesforce as our main contact database means we can operate as a virtual office.

I will be moving on, on the 31 March. At this point there is nothing specific I’m moving to, however I will be developing the Palestine call centre business (see below) and will continue to work with other TBN members interested in this area. I’m also moving on from my HS2 campaign role and although I hope my campaigning and media activities will open new opportunities. I’m moving on in faith and seeking guidance for the next stage. I choose the adventure of living not the safety of existing!

A big thank you to Jerry on behalf of all the partners, members and trustees.
I hope you will agree with me that Jerry has made a significant contribution to TBN. We are very grateful for his commitment and contribution to the movement.I am sure you will join me in giving him a big THANK-YOU.

Our mission of using enterprise to eradicate extreme poverty is a 'marathon' race and requires endurance and persistence. Jerry has shown these strengths and has played a key role in consolidating our start up phase and maintaining TBN over nearly 5 years and leaves us in good stead and with a platform on which we can now continue to build.

As Jerry has said he will continue as a TBN member and continue with his initiatives in Palestine. So we look forward to his updates and continued Network contribution...We also want to wish him well as he explores new areas to invest his skills, especially those gained in his recent high profile campaigning re the HS2.

The Next Steps Forward in 2012.
As we presented at the Members day as well as further developing the UK and our Impact Fund strategy, our next steps involve creating international momentum and extending the Network community.

As part of our continued growth we will be establishing the Network internationally. As part of this vision we are planning on partnering with key contacts to run TBN Conferences in South Africa, Kenya, Singapore/ Indonesia and of course London. These events will enable us to launch and catalyse TBN groups in areas where we have already received strong initial support and requests to cooperate further.

To achieve these goals we are identifying and recruiting an International Network Coordinator who will assist us in this new stage. If you are interested in applying for this role, please email your interest and forward your resume to: stuartd.mcgreevy@tbnetwork.org. Harrison, who has been well trained by Jerry, will continue as the Operations Manager and, through social media and other tools, will enable you to connect with your areas of interest and passion.

Finally, let me take this opportunity to thank you all, for being prepared to be 'activists' in our mission to eradicate extreme poverty through enterprise. Together we are 'being the change that is needed' one job and life at a time...

Updates

Katwe Business Training

Mike Clargo brought us an amazing update from the business training programs in Kampala. A survey was carried out to review the efficiency of training completed in April and May 2011. In this time 252 people completed the training course, 25% of which started a new business, 51% say they can run their existing business better, and the amount of jobs being sustained by these entrepreneurs' businesses increased by 54%.

The majority of the trainees said that the course had both inspired them to start or expand a business (many of whom were not in work at all before), and had taught them financial skills allowing them to regularly save.

Some comments from the trainees:
"I lacked a lot of business skills and as a result all my businesses were collapsing. After the training I re-started and now my businesses are doing well." - Namugosa Aminah (sucessfully growing mushrooms)
"I had an idea but never knew how to impliment it. I almost gave up but not anymore! Now I look at a bright future, thanks to you." - Ongom Langom Ensious (now running a furniture making business)

Transcend Contact Centre

Jerry’s 50 seat contact centre in Bethlehem should be operational in February and the web site is now live at www.transcendsupport.com. The aim is to create jobs, hope, skills, exports unaffected by border closure, and links across the divide.

Jerry says, “It’s clear we have a lot of support and some great opportunities but we are now at that crucial point of burning cash before the income comes in, so quite scary.”

“We are working closely with Bethlehem University. The graduates we are employing are very enthusiastic and have especially strong sales and language skills (bilingual English / Arabic). Can we help you with outbound or inbound voice services?”

Project Funding

Matthijs van der Hoorn who spoke at the TBN Members Conferece in December, and whose company provides assistance in applying for funding, would like to draw the following to your attention.

Private Sector Investment (PSI): Tender open
Should you have an investment proposal for a developing country, the Dutch government is willing to support you financially with a grant up to € 900,000 (as a gift). The new year will start with the closing of PSI tender on February 6th 2012 . Applications have to be submitted before this date. Jerry's contact centre (see above) was one beneficiary.

The Africa Enterprise Challenge Fund (AECF)
Should you have an investment proposal for an African country, the AECF is willing to support new and innovative business models with a grant up to $ 1,500,000. Three funding windows are planned for early 2012: ‘Tanzania Argibusiness’, ‘Zimbabwe’ and ‘Research into Business’.

Opportunities

Food Development Company seeks investors with £5,000 + for food processing operation in Transylvania

Jim Turnbull, whose colleague presented at the 2011 Members Day, established the Food Development Company (FDC) in 2009 with the aim of creating a portfolio of micro food enterprises, applying commercial market based strategies to achieve sustainable social, ethical and environmental objectives as well as a viable and profitable business. The Transylvania Food Company Srl (TFC) was registered as the first operational enterprise in February 2010 and signed a partnership agreement with a UK food & drinks manufacturer to supply produce.

The TFC now has five year rolling supply contracts to produce at least 152,000 litres of raw elder flower juice per year, is building new facilities, and is moving into new markets. The TFC is showing strong economic, social and environmental impact in the area. They have so far raised £360,000 from 12 investors in a combination of debt and equity and are now seeking to raise a further £150,000 to complete the construction work, to purchase further process equipment and vehicles and to recruit more staff. TFC seek individual investments in the £5,000 to £50,000 range.

Business Professor needed in Liberia

The ABC University in Liberia needs a full time Business professor volunteer to teach a new B.Sc. program in Entrepreneurial Studies, starting August 2012. The university was destroyed during the war in Liberia but has been restored and is already offering a B.A. programme. Social Business Highlights of 2011

The Global Social Business Summit 2011 was a huge success gathering 520 participants from 57 nations in Vienna, Austria. Global players like the NASA astronaut Ron Garan became a Social Business Ambassador.
As part of the UN Millennium Development Goals Advocacy Action Group of General-Secretary Ban Ki-moon, Prof. Yunus and the Grameen Creative Lab will execute the YY Millennium Tour. This tour aims to engage young people globally and to motivate them achieving the UN Millennium Development Goals in their countries through social business.
Social business got pushed immensely on the European level by an EU Commission’s initiative to develop and financially support social business in Europe. In November 2011, results were presented to Head of States and leading European personalities.
In Germany we celebrated 1 year Social Business City Wiesbaden and initiated the German Social Business Forum with events in Mönchengladbach and Wiesbaden. Relevant stakeholders from politics, economy and civil society came together to discuss frameworks for social business in Germany. The forum proudly presented first success stories from the Social Business City Wiesbaden: for example Social Business Women who are providing enterprise-credits to women and won the McKinsey Diversity Award 2011. Following the example of Wiesbaden, the city of Fukuoka in Japan became the second Social Business City in 2011.
The German Federal Minister for Family Affairs Dr. Kristina Schröder and KfW Group presented a new instrument to finance social businesses. The program will start on 12 January 2012 and is targeted for social businesses, which have made their first success steps and want to expand.
We are happy that GCL’s international projects made further progress. YY Haiti became an independent legal entity and in Caldas, Colombia we were able to establish four social businesses successfully despite tight political and administrative circumstances.
Academia is going straight forward: 1) GCL@NUS was founded at the National University Singapore. 2) the Yunus & Shiiki Social Business Research Center was founded at Kyushu University and 3 The Grameen Creative Lab gave a lecture series of 40 hours at HULT International Business School for Master students of Social Entrepreneurship 4) The first 6 students graduated in a Master in Design for Social Business from IED, and 5) Prof. Yunus received and honorary doctoral degree in economics from London School of Economics. He was the 20^th person to receive such a degree.
Yunus Social Business, a new company to consult international social business projects was created and is run by former GCL staff members.
The Social Business Tour 2010 was awarded several times this year! Several dozens of social businesses were initiated in Europe through the tour. YY Power!

Current situation in Bangladesh and update on Grameen Bank

After Prof. Yunus resignation as Managing Director of Grameen Bank in May 2011, the government still hasn’t created a selection committee for a new MD
The chairman of Grameen Bank has a non-executive role and is appointed by the Bangladeshi government. However, he has now taken on a more executive role and moved into Grameen Bank tower.
Moreover, the government has released a report intending to bring all Grameen sister companies under Grameen Bank’s supervision and started to take actions particularly on Grameen Telecom.
We are highly concerned about those developments and want to raise awareness that the independence of Grameen Bank and other independent social businesses are still endangered by the Bangladeshi government.
Nevertheless, Prof. Yunus continuously focuses on the promotion of social business.

Looking ahead: The YY Millennium Tour

As part of the UN Millennium Development Goals Advocacy Action Plan of Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, GCL and the United Nations officially launched the YY Millennium Tour at the Global Social Business Summit 2011.
The Tour aims at accelerating the achievement of the UN MDGs by 2015 through social business and focuses on young people in countries in danger of achieving the MDGs by 2015.
Prof. Yunus and the GCL team will be at the World Economic Forum 2012 in Davos, Switzerland end of January to present the concept. Please stay tuned for the outcome!

Grameen Caldas social business fund is ready to invest

The team of Grameen Caldas managed to establish good contacts to the new government of Caldas.
100.000 USD has been paid into the Social Business Fund and is ready to be invested. We are now in the process of screening social business opportunities for investment to generate an impactful social business environment!

Social Business Week in Singapore 2012

The GCL@NUS, a joint initiative with the National University of Singapore, is organizing the first Social Business Week in Singapore in 2012 from the 20^th to the 23^rd of February.
The Social Business Week will start with a two-day Boot Camp for Social Business Entrepreneurs
Other highlights include various speeches with Prof. Yunus. A Public Symposium for Corporate Leaders will take place on the 22^nd, and two additional Public Lectures focusing on the role of youth and the role of Governments and civil society will take place on the 23^rd

Growing SMEs event, Kigali, Rwanda	Due to logistical reasons, the Growing SMEs event in Kigali, Rwanda has been postponed to May 17-18, 2012.‘Growing SMEs’ is a premium international conference geared towards SME growth. The conference brings together high growth entrepreneurs and experts in the topics of developing, growing and financing SMEs. Its aim is to facilitate knowledge exchange, networking and learning, hence further paving the way for advanced SME development and therefore economic growth.
Challenges Training of coaches for the Women in Business Challenge	* With over 220 participants and 85 registered coaches, the third edition of the Women in Business Challenge has already yielded promising results. New IRIS 2.2 Release

The Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN) recently released an upgraded version of the Impact Reporting and Investment Standards (IRIS), which incorporates minor enhancements to existing social and environmental metrics, modifications to glossary definitions, as well as several new indicators.

What does this mean for PULSE users? Well, the taxonomy is evolving and PULSE team is committed to keeping PULSE aligned with the most up-to-date version. New PULSE users can download the latest version from the Appexchange and be IRIS 2.2 compliant immediately. Existing users can upgrade using documentation provided on the PULSE wiki or contact us to find out more about PULSE support. All PULSE users will now have the ability to submit a wider range of data to the IRIS Aggregator.

In late 2010, J.P. Morgan, the GIIN, and The Rockefeller Foundation collaborated on a report, Impact Investments: An Emerging Asset Class, which defined the asset class for the impact investing space. More recently, in late 2011, J.P. Morgan and the GIIN partnered to report on over 2,200 private transactions totaling over $5B of investments. Investors asked to state their opinion on the current state of the impact investment market answered:

Happy Chinese New Year! I hope this finds you well. As you may know, SOW Asia is hosting an on-line discussion on Skoll Foundation's Social Edge devoted to Social Entrepreneurship in China. We went live this morning (HK time) and the early respondees are wandering a bit, in part because Social Edge did not include the framing questions (in English) I have added those questions as a comment.

The Social Entrepreneurship Year in Review | Dowser

As we approach the end of 2011 and take stock of this year in social entrepreneurship – the stories, the leaders, the emerging solutions -- there is a strong sense that we have finally entered the decade of fruitful social change. Back in January, we spoke to leaders with various roles in the social change sector about their predictions for the social entrepreneurship movement in 2011. Based on their assessments of where the sector was headed, we compiled “8 Trends in Social Entrepreneurship to Watch for in 2011.” #
Looking back on those predictions, it’s clear that 2011 has shaped up to be a defining year for social entrepreneurship, a year that was characterized by rapid evolution in the sector, a more unified movement, and increasingly robust participation and action. “The mindset around social change has become pervasive, and that creates an optimism in the world that we can make widespread changes,” says Sasha Dichter, Chief Innovation Officer at Acumen Fund, who served as one of our trend-spotters this year. #
After checking back in with leaders in the field, three major themes emerged that have defined the social impact space this year. Here we review the year in social entrepreneurship and examine how we can optimize for greater impact in 2012 and beyond. #

Infrastructure Emerges & Multiple Changemaking Roles
It became apparent in 2011, that the social entrepreneurship movement has evolved beyond any notion that entrepreneurs are the only ones responsible for change. Major news stories this year, from the Arab Spring to Occupy Wall Street, were indicative of a new kind of society in which every type of individual feels empowered to bring about change. This broader societal trend of a growing sense of personal responsibility has been reflected in major ways throughout the social entrepreneurship movement this year. #
Earlier this year, Gabe Brodbar, founding director of the Catherine B. Reynolds Program in Social Entrepreneurship at NYU, pointed to a trend that he called the “evolution of a meta-profession,” meaning that many other professions are necessary to build infrastructure for the social change sector, and that social entrepreneurship is simply an umbrella term under which several changemaking roles can fall. Brodbar was certain of this trend playing out because the Reynolds program was founded on the very philosophy that social entrepreneurship can and must cross sectors. Engaging students from different disciplines has proven to be effective as a non-linear model for teaching about social impact, however, the Reynolds philosophy took hold outside of the academic space this year and a more sophisticated discussion around infrastructure building emerged. #
Amy Clark, the director of U.S. fellow selection at Ashoka, can attest that there is a much broader view of the sector now, which encompasses not just the various roles necessary to achieve widespread social change, but also in the kind of skills crucial to sparking innovation and solving deep-rooted problems in a creative way. Clark and Ashoka have observed that the core skill set of empathy is often a common denominator among changemakers and successful leaders in the space. Going into 2012, Clark says the field of empathy will be one to watch, especially as school and work settings begin to cultivate these skills and reframe the discussion around success. #
In addition, much like Brodbar predicted that multiple professions would contribute to building the infrastructure for a robust social entrepreneurship sector, Clark pointed to the trend of democratization in the sector this year. As she has observed with the most recent class of Ashoka fellows, more and more these entrepreneurial leaders are igniting a culture of changemakers within their own organization. Clark is not just seeing the type of democracy where multiple people contribute to advancing change for the greater good, but also one that is happening within organizations as a kind of democracy of management. Clark says social entrepreneurs are defining new ways of organizing talent that will be just as crucial to achieving impact. #

A Year of Collaboration
Earlier this year, Kevin Jones, one of the founders of SOCAP, an organization promoting the intersection of money and meaning, talked about the formation of an international community of social entrepreneurs and the importance of teaming with like-minded organizations in Europe to share best practices and accelerate solutions. Those predictions came to light in a big way at the first SOCAP/Europe gathering, which was held in Amsterdam in May. The gathering of more than 650 social entrepreneurs was proof that the social capitalist markets are alive and well, and for Jones, solidified the notion that social entrepreneurship is no longer operating in a silo. According to Jones, this was the year that the sector finally got on base. Rather than reacting to problems as they occur, the sector has settled in enough that it can take a step back and think proactively about solutions. #
Now that the movement for social enterprise has taken hold, the next step will be to scale it effectively in order to achieve the greatest impact. That’s where Jones believes it will be crucial to work collaboratively – both to fund and implement new solutions – as well as be willing to learn from other proven models for change. This year saw the beginnings of collaboration on a number of different levels – certainly collaboration across borders, as well as collaboration among different organizational entities (for profit, nonprofit, etc.), and even consumer collaboration taking place on the ground level (i.e. peer funding and crowdfunding platforms). Going into 2012, Jones is heavily focused on the Nordic countries and what they can teach others in the sector about their collaborative approach to problem solving. For that reason, the next SOCAP/Europe will be held in Sweden and Jones says one of the major goals will be to build an infrastructure of cooperation for the sector. Plus, he believes that there is a lot of value in not just learning how to work well together, but in recognizing successful models and implementing them wherever possible. #

The Funding Pipeline and Measuring Impact
One of the most talked-about topics in the social impact space over the past year has been capital and specifically, the viability of investor capital at various stages of social enterprise growth. #
In discussing this funding pipeline, last year Dichter pointed to the trend that in order to accelerate the impact of social enterprises, the sector would need to look to creative funding solutions, which would utilize a blend of different sources of capital from seed funding to impact investments. Dichter says there’s no doubt that this trend has played out in the sense that funding has increased for social enterprises, and the sector has garnered a lot of excitement among the traditional investing marketplace. However, despite the increased flow of capital into the sector, the funding pipeline is still not as robust as it could be. There aren’t as many investors in the market that have the flexibility and the risk appetite to step in and provide growth capital to social enterprises so that they can reach the stage of development where they are seeing impact. The interest is high, but actual movement is still low. #
It’s a bit of a Catch-22 Dichter says because in order to fuel the development of social enterprise, there needs to be action from investors, however in order for investors to feel comfortable allocating capital, they want to be assured that they will see results. Dichter identifies this as one of the main challenges facing the sector in 2012. However, he says one way to approach the challenge and generate investor action in the sector is to develop a more nuanced vocabulary around the problems we are trying to fund. That requires getting investors to focus on the potential impact of their money over actual financial returns. Regardless of the eventual return, it’s crucial that investors begin to understand the economic realities of solving social problems, and that getting water to a remote African village for example, involves more complex financial support, he says. #
And that’s where the work of organizations like the Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN), a nonprofit dedicated to increasing the scale and effectiveness of impact investing, comes in. Dichter also predicted that 2011 would be the year that the sector moves beyond the development of tools and methods to measure impact and achieves more widespread adoption to accelerate scale. This has certainly been the case, as the recently released study by JP Morgan and the GIIN indicates. According to the report, “Insight into the Impact Investment Market,” investor use of third party systems to measure impact increased by 10 percent since 2010. The GIIN surveyed 52 impact investors and found that 65 percent are using the GIIN’s Impact Reporting and Investment Standards to assess and development their portfolio. Others include Acumen Fund’s Pulse, a proprietary tool that the organization uses to track its investments. The main takeaway of the JP Morgan – GIIN report is that impact investing is still in its infancy, but growing, and that the long-term potential of this new asset class is encouraging. According to the report, respondents plan to invest almost $4 billion in the sector next year. And, as Dichter believes, the more benchmarking we can do for the sector, the more developed it’s going to become. #

Insight into the Impact Investment Market, released by J.P. Morgan and the GIIN, finds that the majority of the 52 surveyed impact investors express tempered optimism about the impact investing industry: they believe it is “in its infancy and growing.” The investors plan to invest almost USD 4 billion over the next year, and most expect that 5-10 percent of portfolios will be allocated to impact investments in ten years.

I recently attended the Social Finance Forum, organized by the newly minted MaRS Centre for Impact Investing. A worthy event, to be sure, it provided me with much to ponder while offering a fascinating snapshot of this at-times-dynamic-at-other-times-stagnant social finance space.

內地繼有名牌乳製品被驗出致癌毒物黃曲霉素B1超標後，食油亦告「淪陷」，廣東省3家製油廠生產的食油被發現含過量黃曲霉素B1，隨後深圳市場監管部門抽查食肆，亦發現其中4家使用的食油毒素超標。

深圳日前發現的4個黃曲霉素B1超標食油樣本，分別來自南山新華記客家食館、金沙皇宮美食休閒廣場、坪山新區坪城酒樓及田心酒店，其中2個超標近4倍。此前，國家質檢總局亦發現，廣東3家食油廠，包括雲浮市雲城區的富盛糧油廠和滿意花生油廠，以及高要市孖寶油有限公司，部分產品的黃曲霉素超標，廣東省質監局已回收市面上的問題食油及立案調查。

國家規定每公斤食油中的黃曲霉素B1應少於10微克，但製作食油的花生等，可能在種植、運輸及儲存過程中因濕熱天氣而發霉，致黃曲霉等生長繁殖。有業內人士更指，部分食肆為降低成本，會採購小廠生產的食油甚至用過期油，而且使用及儲存時無注意衛生，致食油霉變。而小型製油廠生產時普遍無嚴格挑選花生，精煉工藝不足，無黃曲霉素降解設備及出廠檢測設備等，致問題食油流入市場。

據悉，加熱逾攝氏280度才可破壞黃曲霉素的毒性，一般烹飪方法無效。而在12種黃曲霉素化學結構當中，B1的毒性及致癌性最強，亦最常見於天然但受污染的食品當中。

The Global Peter Drucker Forum 2011 on November 3 and 4 was a great success. We have received very positive feed-back from participants and the media regarding speakers, content, organization and location. The video documentation is now available (see below).

The Global Peter Drucker Forum 2012 Forum will take place on November 15 and 16 in Vienna. Theme for 2012 will be "Capitalism 2.0". In a turbulent world with huge transformations under way, systemic changes in our economic and social fabric will be required to address these unprecedented challenges. Managers have a key role in accompanying and shaping the transformation towards an improved capitalist system, where market driven efficiency and the concern for a functioning society are better aligned.

New Ventures Mexico Named Outstanding National Accelerator of 2011

New Ventures Mexico received el Galardon PyME 2011, recognizing their accelerator program as the country's top accelerator for the year. The ceremony, led by Miguel Maron Manzur, Undersecretary of Small and Medium Enterprises for the Ministry of Economy, took place during Mexico's National SME Week. Manzur referred to Rodrigo Villar, New Ventures Mexico Director, as a "visionary," and one of the first to promote green business in Mexico. Congratulations to the New Ventures Mexico team!

New Ventures India Company Nandan Cleantec PLC Goes Public

Nandan, which focuses on the production of the biofuel jatropha, will hold its initial public offering (IPO) on AIM, which is the London Stock Exchange's international market for smaller, growing companies. Nabarro LLP, which is advising Nandan on its IPO, has valued the company at approximately $259.5 million. After 8 years of extensive research, Nandan has developed and received global patents for four hybrids of jatropha seeds with higher oil yield and new cultivation methods that maximize production. The 40,000 acres of jatropha allow Nadan to sequester 3.2 million tons of carbon. Jatropha biofuels provide clean energy to large communities and replace polluting, GHG-intensive options. Nandan currently provides a steady income to over 15,000 small farmers.

New Ventures China Forums Deepen In-Country Collaboration to Support Environmental SMEs

New Ventures China hosted two forums in Shenzhen and Shunde on November 17 and 19, respectively, in collaboration with the Information Center of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). The two events, under the umbrella of the annual High-Tech Fair and Exhibition in Shenzhen, mark a solid step taken by New Ventures to deepen its in-country collaboration, particularly at the government level. During the main forum on November 17 in Shenzhen, a city bordering Hong Kong, New Ventures China announced the upcoming launch of a report on the Green Impact of Chinese SMEs in collaboration with the Information Center of MIIT. The report is scheduled to come out in March 2012.

Investor Forums Take Place in Colombia and Indonesia

New Ventures Colombia's forum, held in Bogota in September, was organized by BiD Network, la Facultad de Administracion de la Universidad de los Andes, el Ministerio de Comercio, Industrio y Turismo de Colombia, CREAME, and New Ventures. The forum, entitled "Growing SMEs," featured entrepreneur presentations and matchmaking sessions alongside sessions on how to grow an enabling environment for SMEs in Colombia.

New Ventures India hosted its investor forum in Mumbai on December 12. The forum included sessions on water and clean energy for all, and a special showcase of environmental entrepreneurs from across Asia, including China and Indonesia. The investor forum, now in its sixth year, drew together a diverse crowd of investors to meet the presenting companies and to discuss environmental entrepreneurship in India.

Strategic Plan Released by New Ventures Indonesia

In December, New Ventures Indonesia released its strategic plan for 2012. The document sends a clear message of the direction NVI is taking to increase impact in 2012, setting specific and measurable business targets and focus areas for the coming year. The Indonesian market, and the Indonesian renewable energy sector in particular, provides an increasingly attractive investment proposition for both traditional and impact investors. Foreign investors are beginning to evaluate the most attractive market segments to invest in. As the Indonesian Government continues to communicate a strong dedication to promoting and enabling the renewable energy sector, this presents exciting business and investment opportunities.

GIULIA CHRISTIANSON JOINS NEW VENTURES AS RESEARCH OFFICER

Giulia Christianson is the new Research Officer for New Ventures. Her role is to lead the research and Global Portfolio investment facilitation initiatives for the program. Giulia's research agenda for 2012 will include country market briefs and Global Portfolio case studies, and she is also exploring opportunities to tie New Ventures into the wider green economy/green growth discussions that are happening at the international organization level (UN, OECD, etc).

Giulia earned a BA in Economics, International Relations, and Political Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She worked for several years as a research assistant and projects officer at the International Monetary Fund before leaving to complete an MBA at Columbia Business School. While in business school, Giulia worked on growth and green business strategy projects in Brazil and Thailand, respectively, and consulted for the New York City Mayor's Office of Long Term Planning and Sustainability.

ENTREPRENEUR OF THE MONTH: SHANGHAI PEARL

Shanghai Pearl Hydrogen, a hydrogen fuel cell company that is part of the New Ventures China portfolio, is currently one of the top three hydrogen fuel cell manufacturers in the world. The company's success has come from its ability to simplify the structure of hydrogen fuel cells and lower their cost. Pearl now provides a reliable alternative energy source within China. In October, Mr. Steve Shi of Pearl Hydrogen traveled to the United States to speak about his experiences and challenges as an entrepreneur at the 2011 Annual ANDE (Aspen Network for Development Entrepreneurs) conference.
