News on The Edge
Welcome to the Social Edge update!

“How do we help social ventures or a whole sector innovate and create new solutions according to their own strategy rather than our personal visions?” This week’s host, IDEO’s Sally Madsen, is the right person to solve such a dilemma.

An expert on human-centered design innovation, she is currently involved with the Ripple Effect, a collaborative project between IDEO, Acumen Fund, the Gates Foundation and prominent water organizations in India and Kenya.

Working with such a wide range of players, she feels that it is critical “not to standardize but to help each organization innovate according to their own strategy.” Join her in the conversation and find out which innovation approach will work for you.

Then read Parag Gupta as he tries to bring the profit margin in Base of Pyramid solid waste management to a point where the sector can attract commercial investment institutions.

Or visit another innovator, Ned Tozun, president and co-founder of D.light Design, as he shares his experience establishing manufacturing operations in China.

Need help implementing your own technology innovations? Take advantage of Mozilla Service Week or review the social entrepreneurship session proposals for SXSW-2010 and vote for your favorites.

Innovation can be found in the past too. Check Leila Chirayath Janah’s list of books that have helped her launch Samasource. This week: a biography of Benjamin Franklin!

Or check Opportunity Collaboration founder Jonathan C. Lewis, who likes to quote the poet W.H. Auden: “We are here on earth to do good to others. What the others are here for, I don’t know.”
