Dear Houghton,

Inspired by a radio programme I heard recently on successful ethical food companies, I bring you:
  • A lowdown of the main ethical trends in food, including the questions people are asking and sample companies from the ClearlySo directory.
And the normal...
  • Jobs in the social business sector: techies, internships and feature writers

Fairtrade vs organic vs local: The lowdown

Fairtrade logoFairtrade

Everyone seems to know about Fairtrade these days- it's all people talked about in our voxpop on social business.  But here's an explanation just in case: If a product has the Fairtrade mark it means that the producers have received a fair price for their materials that includes something called a 'Fairtrade premium' to be invested in the local community.

The questions everyone is asking: Does the Fairtrade premium distort the market? Is the logo a little bit dated? Does Fairtrade have to have a capital 'F'? Is it better to buy a Fairtrade banana than an organic, locally grown apple?

Some sample ClearlySo Fairtrade companies:

Also: See Tom's June blog on Shared Interest, a financial services company for Fairtrade companies, which started off an interesting debate on the future of Fairtrade.

Organic

According to our social business glossary, organic food is:

'any food derived from plants or animals that has been produced without the use of man-made fertilisers, pesticides, growth regulators, routine antibiotics and livestock feed additives.'

It is regulated by various organisations over the world, the main UK one being The (glamorously named) Soil Association.  Organic has grown hugely as a market over the last few years and appeals to consumers not only because of the ethical/environmental benefits but also (perhaps to a greater extent) the perceived health and nutritional benefits.

The questions everyone is asking: Does eating organic food really have any health benefits? Is organic food scaleable, given that more land is required to produce the same amount of produce than if chemicals are used?

Some sample ClearlySo organic companies:

Local

Not to be confused with organic but often overlapping (organic food is, given the lack of preservatives, best eaten near the site of production), the local food movement is driven by the desire to support local communities and, in some cases, to conserve varieties of produce that would otherwise lose their way amidst iceberg lettuces and Spanish strawberries.

The questions everyone is asking: How local is local? Is an organic Portuguese grape better than an inorganic grape from the next door county? Is this food nationalism?

Some sample ClearlySo local-focused companies:

ClearlySo Jobs

BriefcaseA sample of some of the great social business jobs available on ClearlySo:

And Finally...

We are building the website in response to the demands of our main user groups: social businesses and enterprises, socially-minded investors, suppliers and those who wish to engage with this thriving sector.  Traffic is surging and we'd like to keep it that way- tell us what you want!

Dear Oikocredit friend,

Oikocredit looks at more than just the financial bottom line when financing a project partner to reduce poverty. High on the list of importance is our environment.

In this edition of the Ezine, we look at three Oikocredit project partners who pride themselves in using eco-friendly methods and helping poor entrepreneurs at the same time.

Spread the word about socially responsible investment by forwarding this Ezine to those who may be interested in what Oikocredit does.

In practice

Australia: The bare necessities

It was a light-bulb moment when two Australian entrepreneurs envisaged a for-profit company that could also improve the lives of people living in poverty.

Off-grid power company Barefoot Power was born after Harry Andrews and Stuart Craine decided to produce safe, affordable lighting for the poor. The Oikocredit equity partner provides safe and affordable lighting systems to the poor, and encourages small entrepreneurs to sell their products.

Firefly entrepreneur Joseph Kato, purchased his motorbike with profit he made from selling Barefoot's lighting products.

Philippines: One coconut at a time

When Juan Marquez came up with the concept of 1M Agro-Fuel, the aim went beyond traditional business.

Not only did the project need to be profitable, it had to be sustainable, create opportunities for local employment and be in tune with the environment. Juan found the solution among the masses of rotting coconuts polluting the waterways of the Philippines.

Bolivia: Preserving the environment and the community

For the Bolivian company of Guaguazú S.A, the sustainable use of the native Cusi Palm is the key to success.

Social Enterprise Coalition activity

Booking opens for Voice10

The Voice10 programme is available online and the Coaliton is delighted to be able to reveal the names signed up to speak at the event in Cardiff on 1st and 2nd February 2010, which include Nigel Annett, CEO of Welsh Water, Ed Mayo, Chief Executive of Co-operatives UK ,and Caroline Mason, CEO of Investing for Good.

Along with plenaries, workshops and an interactive exhibition, the new Social Enterprise Mark will be launched on day one (more info below in News), and there will be a Social Enterprise Question Time event to debate some of the big issues facing the movement at the end of day two.

The theme of Voice10 is “No More Business as Usual”. Social enterprises do more than just "the usual"; they are profit making businesses that place ethics, transparency and social and environmental return at their core.

With the UK still in recession, the Social Enterprise Coalition believes the time is right for the movement to come together and provide some answers to the challenges faced by business in the current climate:

  • How can we ensure social enterprises have a greater impact and help rebuild a better, more sustainable economy?
  • Can social enterprise reform public services at a time when value for money is one of the most important issues we face?
  • And how can we make new connections and collaborate with each other and with the private sector?
Further information on the programme will be released in the coming weeks but booking is now open and you can register for your place at the Voice10 website - http://voice10.org/pages/voice.html

Last few days to vote for the Social Enterprise Awards 2009

The Social Enterprise Awards is now in its final stage and the public have until Monday 30th November to vote for the winners - so vote now!

Each of the four nations unveiled their winners at special events held last week.  These organisations are all now in the running to win the UK wide prize in their category.  The England winners met Prime Minister Gordon Brown at a special social enterprise reception held at No 10 Downing Street on Social Enterprise Day.

Videos of each of the finalists are available online to help the public decide how to cast their vote - http://www.socialenterpriseawards.org.uk/pages/socialenterpriseawards.html

The winners will be revealed at a gala ceremony in London on 3rd December.

New manifesto workshop in Leeds

The postponed Leeds manifesto workshop has now been rescheduled.  It will take place at the Oxford Place Centre in Leeds on 9 December.

The workshops are intended to help the Coalition to gauge views and tell you more about our plans for the social enterprise manifesto. We would like to hear your thoughts and ideas on what we should ask from the political parties.

The workshop is open to all Coalition members. To register visit the Social Enterprise Coalition website.

Call for good commissioning practice

The Coalition is part of the National Programme for Third Sector Commissioning Partnership.

Our role within this is researching good practice and developing detailed guidance on commissioning from social enterprises. We are therefore looking for excellent examples of how commissioners have used innovative ways to get greater value from their commissioning. This could include the creation of new social enterprises, the use of community benefit clauses, building capacity and user involvement.

If you have had a positive commissioning experience you would like to share; or are a commissioner with a creative track record, please contact ceri.jones@socialenterprise.org.uk.

Funding future jobs in your social enterprise

As the Future Jobs Fund is rolled out, we would like to continue building up a picture of how social enterprises are accessing the Fund, the capacity of social enterprises to scale up this involvement, and growth opportunity for the Fund itself.

We wish to gather more information on the length of funding, contract sizes, distinct business support needs that arise, innovative examples of how social enterprises plan to sustain jobs, and thoughts on what more the Department for Work and Pensions should do to involve social enterprises in creating meaningful employment.

Please contact Jon Woolfson by email on jon.woolfson@socialenterprise.org.uk or telephone 020 7793 2325 with your responses.

News

Social Enterprise Mark coming in the new year

The Coalition and RISE have officially entered into a joint venture that will administer a new national Social Enterprise Mark which will be launched in February at Voice10.

Steve Wyler, who is the chair of the Steering Group that has been working on an identifier for Social Enterprise said the following: “We’re really excited to officially make the Social Enterprise Mark available to social enterprises across the UK.

As RISE’s Mark has shown and research has confirmed – there is a need for a visual identity for social enterprises in order to significantly raise awareness and understanding of the added value of what social enterprises do.

We have to be ambitious about social enterprise and aim for widespread visibility – we believe this new Mark will help move social enterprise into the mainstream, where it belongs.”

Global recognition for The Phone Co-op

The Phone Co-op was recognised as one of the outstanding co-operatives from around the world at the International Co-operative Alliance General Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, last week.

The Oxfordshire-based telecoms co-operative, the only one of its kind in the UK, received an Honourable Mention in the medium sized category of the dotCoop Global Awards for Co-operative Excellence and was the only UK co-operative amongst the nine award winners.

Accepting the award on behalf of The Phone Co-op, chief executive Vivian Woodell said: “It is a great honour for The Phone Co-op to be recognised at a global level, especially as the key criteria used by the judges were all about how well each organisation put into practice a distinctively co-operative business approach, which is what we aim to do. I should like to pay tribute to our board, and to my colleagues, as well as to our customers and members for having made this achievement possible.”

National Safeguarding Delivery Unit: secondment opportunity

This is an opportunity to work alongside central government and multi-agency partners to achieve improved outcomes for children by being part of the newly created National Safeguarding Delivery Unit (NSDU).

The NSDU became operational on 1 July 2009 as part of the Government’s response to Lord Laming’s report The Protection of Children in England: A Progress Report. The Government accepted all of his recommendations, issuing a detailed response on 6 May 2009, The Protection of Children in England: action plan.

The NSDU will provide cross-government leadership on safeguarding issues through a group of expert staff from across government, local partners and the third sector dedicated to driving forward a programme of improvement in safeguarding children. The Unit reports into the ministerial subgroup on safeguarding attended by the Secretaries of State for Children, Schools and Families, Health, Justice and the Home Affairs.

They are keen to arrange a secondment from a third sector organisation into the Unit for someone who has direct experience of leading child protection services at local level.

This will be an excellent opportunity to have a real influence on national policy development and be part of what we hope will grow to be a dynamic multi-agency environment.  If you are interested, please contact Alison Murphy alison.murphy@nsdu.gsi.gov.uk or 020 7783 8608 by 18 December 2009.

Letter from Jacqueline Novogratz

Dear Houghton,

Let me start this letter by mentioning that we’re separating my update letter to the community from the Acumen team’s quarterly updates.  We’ve listened to your preference for shorter, more frequent communications that go deeper into single insights or investments, along with a more personal letter from me. Of course, given our commitment to accountability, we also will send our investors a comprehensive update once a year.  We count on you, our community, to let us know what you think about this new approach, so thanks in advance.

Jacqueline (far right) on a community outreach trip with LifeSpring Hospitals in India

This past week, we held our Investor Gathering at the Rubin Museum, thanks to the generosity of Donald and Shelley Rubin.  We were humbled to welcome Acumen Partners and team members who traveled from 16 different countries. The energy, intellect and commitment in the room were palpable; we felt incredibly honored and inspired. Special thanks to Arif Naqvi, Acumen Steward and our keynote speaker who traveled from Dubai. Arif spoke about an “empathetic evolution” in today’s interconnected world. He looked back at history and discussed the role of entrepreneurs, and the power of individuals to effect large-scale change.  It was a privilege to hear him speak about the world and about Acumen Fund as well.

If there were one theme at the gathering, it was that Patient Capital is working – and we are seeing it in every country in which we work. I visited Pakistan for the first time in 2002, and that same year we approved our first loan to Kashf when that microfinance organization had less than 15,000 borrowers. Today, Kashf lends to 300,000 women through its nonprofit arm as well as its recently formed commercial bank.

I remember visiting WaterHealth International’s first plant serving a low-income rural village outside Vijayawada in southern India in 2004. Two weeks ago, a group of intrepid Acumen Partners joined me in India and we were all present at the launch of WHI’s 285th plant!  Global CEO Sanjay Bhatnagar told me that the company expects to have 600 plants serving 600 villages in the next eighteen months. Moreover, we’re learning that the creation of a single company in a new, untested market can lead to the building of an industry – and this is where change really starts. Whereas we saw WHI as the only investment option for drinking water in 2004, we’re now seeing a growing number of companies in India entering the drinking water space.

I remember being asked frequently – and with great skepticism - whether social enterprise could ever scale. What has been exciting is to see not only hundreds of thousands being served by each enterprise, but a number of our enterprises entering into government contracts to grow exponentially.  This combination of innovation and jumpstarting the provision of public goods with private resources is certainly one path to the future.

Before we sit too comfortably on our laurels, we also recognize that we are headed for new challenges.  With at least three companies exploring public-private partnerships, we need to strengthen our skill set in order to provide the right financing and operational support. Clearly, there will be new issues when partnering with the public sector, including in some cases the risk of corruption. We know this issue isn’t easy: what does an entrepreneur do when running a tight cash operation and the government official refuses to pay her on time or until she first pays a small amount to him to release the check? We’re hoping to confront these issues jointly with our investees – patient capital should allow this - and begin to build a collective brand around dealings with the highest integrity. Only then will the officials stop demanding petty bribes to get simple things done which hurt the poor more than anyone else.

We also are introducing a new product this year: Acumen Capital Markets (ACM) officially closed in November with $15.9 million in capital committed from an array of individual investors, foundations and corporations.  The fund was anchored with support (both financially and in thought partnership and overall structuring) from the Rockefeller and Skoll Foundations and we are grateful for their early belief as well as their willingness to jump in and work to make the fund relevant for our investors.  We couldn’t have done this without all of the investors and we thank everyone for taking a risk and being part of this.  Essentially, ACM will expand the sources of capital available to Acumen and, in particular, we expect the Fund to focus on some of the more mature opportunities in our portfolio that are increasingly ready for this new type of investor capital.

No Investor Gathering would be complete without a final presentation by the Acumen Fellows.  This year, the class came from Ghana, Zimbabwe, the United States, Uganda, Lebanon, Pakistan and Japan.  Indeed, it is worth taking a few minutes to watch the video of their performance to get an understanding of the richness that this class brings to everyone who meets them. The class has now left New York and is working at various Acumen investees, and you can follow them on the Acumen blog.  Past classes are now doing what we’d dreamed – helping to build social enterprises, starting their own, and running university classes focused on creating a sector based on the ideas of patient capital.

The Fellows program also has gained in visibility and is attracting an even more diverse, experienced group of applicants.  We kept the application process open for less than a month and made it more demanding so as to discourage less serious applicants. Regardless, we’ve received nearly 600 applications from 65 countries, and the quality has never been better.  We’ll announce the next class in early Spring.

On our recent Acumen partner trip to India I was most struck by the sense of empowerment among the villagers and slum dwellers we met. I remember visiting rural Kenya to see a solar project in 1994.  I was with Peter Goldmark and members of the first Philanthropy Workshop class, some of whom – like Andrea Soros-Colombel and Stuart Davidson – are on Acumen’s Board today.  Though laced with idealism, the project was based on expensive technology and had no real distribution strategy nor focus on sustainability.  Not surprisingly, it failed.

Fifteen years later, we walked into a rural village with Sam Goldman, the CEO of D.light Design, a company that sells affordable solar lights to the poor in India and Tanzania.  This time, there was a solar light hanging beside the door of every house we saw. The women treated us not with easy thanks afforded to donors, but instead, they shared their enthusiasm for the decisions they made themselves.  “We bought these lights,” they would say, “because now our children can study without fear of being harmed by fire from kerosene. This light doesn’t harm our health. And it is lower cost than kerosene, so we earn more income too!”  The difference between talking to a recipient of charity and a customer is the difference between passivity and action, between an unequal relationship and one based on real partnership. Having done this kind of work for a quarter century now, this change in the relationship is the most breathtaking of all. For only when we see each other as partners and as equals can we really hope to wipe out poverty.

At the end of my  Investor Gathering talk, I shared one of my favorite quotes by the Sufi philosopher Jalalud’din Rumi

-- “Let the beauty of what you love be what you do.”

The next line makes the quote all the more powerful:

-- “There are a hundred ways to kneel and kiss the floor.”

At Acumen Fund, we are driven by values that guide our aspiration to combine a hard edged focus on financial and operational excellence with a sense of divinity or grace in how we do the work.  I think often of the mentors who guide the way we are trying to build Acumen Fund, especially John Gardner and Dr. Venkataswamy. Though no longer with us, both left legacies in the hearts and minds of thousands of individuals, all of whom continue to be inspired by those men, and are focused on extending a greater sense of humanity, of freedom, and of hope to those too often left out.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I send my deepest appreciation to each of you for the work you do in your own lives on behalf of others.  John Gardner would frequently tell me to commit to something and it will set you free. I have never felt more committed nor more supported than right here, right now.  I feel grateful for the incredible team with whom I am privileged to work, our wonderful board and advisors, the partners who continue to give in this difficult economic climate, our entrepreneurs, and the customers we serve - for they also teach us. I also am thankful for so many friends of Acumen who are helping us bring the idea of patient capital to the world, who believe in our mission, and who dare to dream a world where we can extend the proposition that all men are created equal to every human being on the planet.

Have a wonderful holiday season.

With gratitude and respect,

Today's Newsletter is Sponsored by the Centre for Insurance and Risk Management at IFMR

On December 10-11 in New Delhi, India the UNDP is organizing a National Conference on the Status of Microinsurance in India, in collaboration with the Centre for Insurance and Risk Management (CIRM) and the Centre for Microfinance (CMF) at the Institute of Financial Management and Research (IFMR). The event will take stock of the status of microinsurance in India, with a special focus on states with poorer scores on the Human Development Index. The conference will host experts such as Tarun Bajaj (Ministry of Finance), Craig Churchill (ILO), Vijay Kalavakonda (World Bank), Dr. Nishant Jain (GTZ), and Ralf Radermacher (MIA).

Social Enterprise, Where Are You?

December 1st is World AIDS Day. It serves as an important reminder that HIV and AIDS are global realities. In some way, however large or small, HIV/AIDS touches most of us. We have friends, family members, or colleagues who are HIV+. We see celebrities championing HIV/AIDS awareness. Or we work with affected communities. HIV/AIDS has not gone away. There are many things that still need to be done.

According to UNAIDS estimates, there are now 33.2 million people living with HIV, including 2.5 million children. During 2007, 2.5 million people became newly infected with the virus. Around half of all people who become infected with HIV do so before they are 25 and are killed by AIDS before they are 35. These are daunting figures.

Among those countries particularly affected by HIV/AIDS, India is a special case - with the primary mode of transmission from husband to wife. According to the most recent data, compiled from 2007 figures and following the most recent National Household Survey, the estimate of HIV prevalence in India stands at 2.5 million. While a large gross number, the prevalence rate among adults in India ages 15 to 49 is a mere 0.3%.

In tune with the theme for World AIDS Day 2009 - 'Universal Access and Human Rights' - global leaders have pledged to work towards universal access to HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and care - recognizing these as fundamental human rights. But social enterprise needs to step up to the table. While there is much activity around prevention, treatment, and care in the traditional NGO sector, we at Beyond Profit are always on the lookout for innovative and sustainable market-based solutions to lessen the scourge of HIV/AIDS, both in India and globally.

Podcast: Praseeda Kunam, Woman Entrepreneur

At Beyond Profit, we hold female social entrepreneurs close to our heart (probably because we are a team of mostly women!). Microfinance is a field in which women have long been a majority of customers, but a minority of the leaders. Praseeda Kunam is an exception, a pioneering woman who launched and runs her own microfinance institution. Praseeda left the job market after getting her MBA to start Samhita Community Development Service, which serves poor women in Madhya Pradesh, a particularly impoverished state in India.

In this podcast, hear Praseeda speak about the challenges of being a woman entrepreneur in the financial inclusion space, the role of technology in the rapid expansion of Samhita, and the road ahead for her organization and the sector.

Praseeda was the winner of the Srijan 2008 "Most Promising Business Idea Award." The Srijan Microfinance Forum recognizes emerging and innovative microfinance initiatives in India and serves as a platform for public debate about some of the sector's most pressing issues.

Beyond Profit Issue 2: Fresh off the Press

Charities: Following the Money Trail

You practically have to be born with a halo and wings in order to meet the currently accepted characterization of a "social entrepreneur." By setting the bar so high, are we actually preventing the entry of a diverse set of changemakers? Gabriel Brodbar, Director of the Catherine B. Reynolds Foundation Program in Social Entrepreneurship at the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at New York University, offers a new framework for thinking about the roles of social changemakers.

Dear Skoll Newsletter Subscriber,

We've posted the following stories to the Skoll Foundation Blog over the last two weeks:

Free the Children Enlists Colbert Nation on Child Labor
Marc Kielburger, a 2007 Skoll social entrepreneur and co-founder, with his brother, Craig, of Free the Children, was in the hot seat November 17 across from Steve Colbert of the Colbert Report on Comedy Central.  They talked about child labor, with Colbert arguing for his need for (child labor produced) $1.99 tube socks and Marc pointing out that keeping kids in school and helping them grow up to become productive citizens is key to breaking the cycle of poverty.  It's about a 7 minute segment, and highly entertaining.

Room To Read Tapped by FT for Seasonal Appeal
Room to Read, led by 2006 Skoll social entrepreneur John Wood, has been selected by the Financial Times as its partner for the FT's annual seasonal appeal.  Room to Read follows another Skoll social entrepreneurial organization, Camfed, which was the FT seasonal appeal partner for the last two years.  The FT seasonal appeal has raised £2.4 million over the last three years for its seasonal appeal partners.  The partnership also generally involves a series of stories in the FT about the work of the partner organization.  You can see a short video of John taking about how the FT appeal will help Room to Read expand here.

Civic Ventures and MetLife Recognize Top Encore Employers
Civic Ventures, the first social entrepreneurial organization recognized in the 2010 Skoll Award cycle, announced with MetLife Foundation today its Encore Opportunity awards for 2009. These recognize eight organizations in the non-profit and government arena that are exemplary in tapping the services of older Americans for the public good. They range from an organization employing Native Americans over 50 to teach their native tongue to children to another that teaches environmentally sound farming methods to yet another focused on helping older people with disabilities live independently in their own homes. You can read more about the winners here.

Skoll Social Entrepreneurs Honored at Global Education Summit
Two Skoll social entrepreneurs, Vicky Colbert of Escuela Nueva and Martin Burt of Fundacion Paraguaya, were among six awards winners at the World Innovation Summit for Education in Qatar. They were recognized for the originality and impact of their work. Both Vicky and Martin are great examples of social entrepreneurs who have achieved scale not simply by growing their organizations, but by practicing an "open source" approach to their models, encouraging replication by others in Latin America and across the world.  Read the write up on Vicky and the one on Martin.

Healthcare meets Innovation in Cuba
Lakshmi Karan of the Skoll Foundation writes from the Global Forum for Health in Havana. This is an annual event that gathers over 800 participants from across the globe to explore innovation in health and health research. Social entrepreneurship is a theme of the forum this year. Skoll awardees Andrea Coleman (Riders for Health), Vera Cordeira (Saúde Criança Renascer) and Joe Madiath (Gram Vikas) are on panels highlighting social entrepreneurial approaches/models to address critical issues in healthcare.

Scaling Social Impact - Day 2
Kimberly Dasher Tripp continues her reporting from the Scaling Social Impact conference at Duke. Among other discussions, participants reflected on the scaling practices of Skoll award recipients Gram Vikas and mothers2mothers. Gram Vikas has historically kept very tight control over replication efforts with partners, but a few partners are now proving to have innovative ways to stay true to the values of the model while implementing it in new village and cultural contexts. mothers2mothers, at an exciting moment of scale, is in the process of strategizing how to replicate in new sites while keeping fidelity to the core model.

Scaling Social Impact
Kimberly Dasher Tripp of the Foundation reports from the Scaling Social Impact conference at the Fuqua School of Business at Duke. She writes about identifying what it is we are trying to scale, looking at different pathways to scale, ensuring fidelity to one's model as one grows, and scaling impact versus scaling the organization.

IDSP Leader Honored with INSEAD Scholarship
Dr Quratul ain Bakhteari, founder of the Institute for Development Studies and Practices in Pakistan and a 2006 Skoll social entrepreneur, has been awarded an Apax Foundation Scholarship to do work at INSEAD in its social entrepreneurship program.

Climate Change’s Health Risks
Health Care Without Harm, founded by 2006 Skoll social entrepreneur Gary Cohen, has led a group of health care organizations in urging President Obama to take a strong position at the upcoming Copenhagen climate change talks to protect public health interests.  Health Care Without Harm has pulled together organizations representing over 3 million health care workers, including seven major hospital systems, in the effort. You can read the letter to President Obama here.

What Had You Accomplished by the Age of 4?
Kiva, led by 2008 Skoll social entrepreneurs Matt Flannery and Premal Shah, just had its 4th birthday.  They celebrated with a pretty cool accomplishment - surpassing the $100 million level in loans.  Kiva enjoys a 98 percent repayment rate, has funded over 250,000 entrepreneurs, and has over 587,000 lenders representing 185 countries (Kiva has a great set of metrics that allows you to track activities in real time.)  Not bad for a 4 year old.  The blog post also covers the many touch points between Kiva and the Skoll Foundation over the last four years.

Insights on Corporate Foundations – IS Conference
In a third post from the Independent Sector conference, Lakshmi Karan reports on conversations on corporate philanthropy and how businesses can move beyond today's economic and political disruptions and support the work of nonprofits in communities around the world.  The blog covers giving strategy and priorities and support for capacity building.

Working Effectively with Every Generation – IS Conference
Lakshmi Karan's second blog post from the Independent Sector Conference covers issues of multi-generational leadership within organizations, including how to develop mutual mentoring and peer coaching opportunities and create work structures that foster effective and efficient collaboration across generations. Baby boomers currently in leadership roles at non profits are seeing their work life extended. So how does one balance the tension of fewer available leadership roles with a growing number of youth entering the work force and expecting to see growth opportunities?

Observations from the 2009 Independent Sector Conference
Lakshmi Karan of the Skoll Foundation reports from the Independent Sector conference.  This blog posting discusses the next generation of nonprofit leaders. Independent Sector's "2009 NGen: Moving Nonprofit Leaders from Next to Now" program brings together 200 professionals under the age of 40 to enhance their knowledge and expand their networks.

FEATUREs
Design Thinking for Social Innovation
Designers have traditionally focused on enhancing the look and functionality of products. Recently, they have begun using design tools to tackle more complex problems, such as finding ways to provide low-cost healthcare throughout the world. Businesses were first to embrace this new approach - called design thinking - now nonprofits are beginning to adopt it too.

Endowment for a Rainy Day

Instead of drawing down their endowments to offset losses of income, nonprofits resorted to cutting programs and personnel, sometimes dramatically. To prepare for future financial downturns, nonprofits should treat endowments as rainy day funds, not cut programs to preserve the endowment.

@rosettathurman Considering the fact that many #nonprofits leave their miniony jobs to Gen Y I would say that the system is ageist
@rosettathurman Boomers have to get used to a new voice & platforms just for us
@rosettathurman it's important to be respectful, but more important to push the envelope. You can do both. You do.
@rosettathurman I, with u. The greatest creativity will come from the Gen Xrs & Gen Yrs who are being denied jobs by the current #leadership
