How might we increase social impact with OpenIDEO over the next year?
There's a new challenge for social good!

Wow! What an eventful year it's been – there are now over 17,000 of us from more than 170 countries collaborating on challenges for social good at OpenIDEO.

Together, we've collected and created thousands of Inspirations and Concepts around pressing social issues, including maternal health, affordable education, local food and cancer. We've also caught the attention of others, earning awards from the likes of the Webbys and Core 77 and mentions from The New York Times to Harvard Business Review. But most importantly – we've done it all together.

As we reflect on the year that's been and celebrate our achievements, let's also turn our attention to the year ahead. We're excited to launch a fresh challenge that's about improving the impact of our very own collaborative community! Over the next 6 weeks we're hoping you'll join us to inspire, concept and evaluate in true, spirited OpenIDEO style to help shape the way we might extend our achievements even further and more meaningfully.

We'll start by asking you to share your Inspirations around learnings and highlights from OpenIDEO, explore the scope of social impact, consider various ways to connect people and even try out taking small steps in creating impact in your own communities. Next up, during the Concepting phase, you'll get the chance to build upon all this great insight to suggest ingenious ways in which the OpenIDEO community can extend impact as we go from our first year's baby steps to bolder strides. And of course, throughout it all, you can contribute by joining one or multiple community conversations. Many of the awesome ideas our community has come up with over the past year have been through keen discussion and sharing of diverse, global perspectives.

So if you're passionate about collaboration and social impact – join us to make a difference!

Google+ Advice for NPOs
Due to strong interest in Google+ profiles for businesses and nonprofits, the Google+ team has refocused a few priorities and we expect to have an initial version of business profiles up and running for everyone, including nonprofits, in the next few months. In the meantime, we ask that you not create a profile for your organization using a consumer profile on Google+. The platform is not currently built for the business use case, and we want to help you build long-term relationships with your constituents. Individuals within your organization are welcome to create their own personal profiles and share information through those.

Samasource, a social business dedicated to reducing poverty by connecting women, youth, and refugees to digital work, relies on Google Apps & Google AdWords to efficiently run their operations & get their message out to the world. Check out this short video to hear how they use Google Apps to scale their impact.

"The suite of Google products has really helped us get off the ground and not have to pay too much money to do that. One of the main things that we’re dependent on is the movement work into the cloud. More and more work can get done without having workers in the same location. Using collaborative lists and shared information is one of the ways that nonprofits can reduce the pain of having a highly distributed organization without a lot of funding to build specialized software."

This month we caught up with Ramya Raghavan, YouTube Product Marketing Manager, to hear the latest and greatest in the world of online video &  how nonprofits can leverage YouTube to get their message out.

Q: Why is online video important for nonprofits?
Combining sight, sound and motion, video has the unique power to stir emotion in the viewer and compel him or her to take action. Whether you want to increase donations or raise awareness, video can help you achieve your organization's goals. YouTube, in particular, has 40 million unique daily viewers so by uploading a video you are potentially exposing your organization and its mission to a vast new audience who might not have otherwise heard of your work.

Q: What are some features in YouTube that nonprofits should know about?
Last March, YouTube started offering everyone the ability to automatically create captions on their videos. So far, auto-captions have been generated on nearly 40 million videos, and the number of manually-created caption tracks has more than tripled. Last week, we rolled rolled out this feature to a new language — Japanese -- and are hoping to add more languages soon.
YouTube also recently introduced a logoless player option. Many nonprofits have asked for a version of the YouTube player without a YouTube logo, so the video plays without any branding nearby. We’ve now added a simple option to do it. At the end of the video URL in your embed code, just add the code ?modestbranding=1 and the player will show without the YouTube logo in the control bar. Note that a small “YouTube” text label will still show up in the upper-right corner of a paused video when you hover over the player.

Q: Can you share any cool stories of organizations using YouTube?
InvisiblePeople.TV, led by Mark Horvath, is a great example of an organization using YouTube to tell the stories of people who often don't have a voice. Through their YouTube channel, Invisible People chronicles the stories of homeless people across North America. With over 300 videos uploaded - and new ones added every day - they are a great example of an organization that is consistently and thoughtfully using YouTube to spread a message. To learn more about their work, check out this blog post on the YouTube blog.

I also love the story of "The Pink Glove Dance," a feel-good video from the staff at the Portland St. Vincent Medical Center. The video is arguably the most viral nonprofit video ever with over 13 million views and it reminds me that a nonprofit video can be fun. In addition, the video helps the viewer understand why their organization is so special.

Q: Do you have any tips for an organization that's just getting started with YouTube?
Tell serial stories. Engage viewers with a series of videos that tell a story around a specific theme, and keep them coming back for more. Once you've created a few episodes, put them into a playlist. This allows you to develop several video narratives targeted at particular demographics. A good example is Rainforest Action Network’s “Greenwash of the Week" series or "Oxfam's Green Granny" series.

Respond to current events
. Address relevant news stories by posting videos that explain your position. You can then embed them in emails to your supporters — a video message can be more effective than a text-laden email. Also, users are probably more likely to be searching for topics currently in the news and may be more likely to find your video organically through the YouTube search bar. You’ll want to be sure to tag your video with timely and relevant words.

Make your audience part of the video
. Using YouTube annotations, you can create a “choose your own adventure”-style video, which puts the viewer in the driver’s seat and allows them to decide their video “fate.” Two great nonprofit examples of this style are “A Different Ending," a campaign combating knife crime in the U.K., and “That's Not Cool," a campaign from the Ad Council about staying safe online.

Q: Where can nonprofits go to find resources and support for YouTube?
Visit the "Tips and Tricks" section at www.youtube.com/nonprofits or helpful advice that is geared specifically towards nonprofits. For general YouTube help, from the best file formats for uploading to how to caption your video, the YouTube Help Center is a great resource.

Social Enterprise Senior Leadership Course - *Extra places now available* Update

Effective leadership is fundamental to the future success of your organisation and of the social enterprise sector.  Leadership development enhances every area of your business model and operations, and will maximise your potential to deliver social value and return on investment.

A small number of extra places have been made available for senior leaders to attend the Senior Social Enterprise Leadership Development programme, beginning in September.

The Social Enterprise Coalition have developed a Social Enterprise Leadership Development course which is being delivered by Real Partners CIC, designed for professionals keen to improve their performance and grow their organisations through effective and focused leadership. The course includes personal leadership development days, and the opportunity to meet and learn from other leaders through social enterprise visits, roundtables, and peer-to-peer events.

Further information is available in the course programme , and dates are confirmed as follows:

Wed 14th and Thursday 15th Sept - Two Day Enterprise Workshop - social enterprise venue, HighPoints Conference Centre, Leicester

Week commencing 3rd October - social enterprise visit (day and location to be confirmed)

Thurs 3rd Nov - One Day Roundtable Leadership Excellence - HighPoints Conference Centre, Leicester

Thurs 24th Nov - Peer-to-Peer Learning Event - social enterprise venue, The Buszy, Milton Keynes

Speakers on the programme will include senior leaders from the Social Enterprise Coalition, HCT, Hillholt Wood, Stride, The Healthy Hub CIC and Age UK.

The programme is part funded by BIG Lottery, and we are able to offer this comprehensive course which is valued at £3,150 for only £550 plus VAT.

Application forms for the course need to be sent to leadership@socialenterprise.org.uk by Tuesday 9th August, and payment needs to be received by the beginning of the Programme on 14th September.

What will I get from attending the Senior Social Enterprise Leadership Development programme?

Social Enterprise leaders need tailored development programmes which truly understand the social enterprise business model and the challenges that face the sector. Participants will have the opportunity to learn with and hear from other like-minded social leaders, talk openly and honestly about their experiences, and share real-life examples of best practice that leaders can take back to their own organisations.

Participants will address the fundamental requirements of leading an effective, innovative and successful social enterprise, based on four themes:

1 Leading your social enterprise – motivating and leading a successful organisation.

2 Managing your social enterprise – readiness to manage a productive and profitable venture.

3 Marketing your social enterprise – communicating with and influencing others.

4 Sustaining your social enterprise – creating a long term balance of people, income and planet.

The Social Enterprise Leadership Development course will help participants to;

-       Become an inspirational leader and role model by learning to use the skills, strategies and secrets from successful enterprise leaders and dynamic real time case studies.

-       Become a skilled and confident leader who can build winning teams to achieve outstanding success

-       Work brilliantly with others by building the capability to influence key stakeholders, forge relationships and maintain productive partnerships.

-       Develop commercial acumen, improve strategic thinking skills and shape a value-driven social enterprise culture.

-       Develop a marketing mindset and maximise your organisation’s potential in today’s challenging environment.

Participants on the Social Enterprise Emerging Leaders course, held earlier this year, had this to say about the programme:

“It has given me the confidence to lead an organisation based on my vision and values”

“The opportunity to consider and relate theory in to practice and discuss operational challenges was hugely beneficial”

“As a result of attending I have an increased knowledge of enterprise models and can now support the development of further opportunities for us”

“Group discussions were especially valuable in gaining an insight of a the wide variety of work being undertaken by social enterprise, and developing understanding of theory into practice”

“I will use and refer back to the materials provided and the network will be invaluable”

ACCION among Top 50 Global Impact Investors

Everyone's buzzing about Impact Investing! With reports such as J.P. Morgan's “Impact Investments: An emerging asset class” released last fall, impact investors are being recognized for leveraging capital markets to create social change—and ACCION is working at the forefront of this exciting movement. So Long, Boss – I Work for Myself Now

To her surprise, ACCION Ambassador Katie Webster discovered that many of the loan recipients in a local comité were previously, or are even currently, employed in the formal sector: “This was not consistent with my perception of the typical microcredit recipient, at least here in Paraguay. Based on my (albeit quite limited) understanding of the traditional female comité member, the typical client has been previously employed only in the informal sector if at all, and the first microloan she receives likely represents her most significant foray into the business world to date.” Read the full post here >
