Does social entrepreneurship exist in China?

…was an interesting question that I was recently asked.  This reminds me of a field study in China with my MBA classmates in May where we visited 19 organisations – both domestic and foreign, big and small.  Some of the feedback we received was quite thought-provoking:

For instance, the Chinese host of one major venture capital firm, when asked to give an example of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs that they have carried out, told us that their CSR initiative is “doing what they are doing” (investing in China-centric technology companies).

Social Enterprise Coalition

Changes to the Coalition's policy and research directorate

The month of August has brought some recent changes within the Coalition's policy and research directorate.

We are pleased to announce that George Leahy - the Coalition's director of policy and research - has extended his secondment from the Department of Health with the Social Enterprise Coalition until the end of December 2009.  George will be in the role of director of research, taking forward the Coalition's research programme and a number of specific projects including the Identifier project.

Secondly, on 17 August the Coalition appointed Ceri Jones as interim head of policy.  Ceri will be leading the Coalition's policy work.

We have recently bid farewell to Daniel Shah (research and policy officer) who has joined the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) and Ewan Kennedy (policy officer) who has joined Race on the Agenda (ROTA).  We wish them well and thank them for their hard work and contributions in developing our policy and research agenda.

Finally, we are in the process of recruiting for two new policy roles - senior policy officer and policy support officer. These will be temporary contracts until the end of the year.

School for Social Entrepreneurs

School for Social Entrepreneurs opens in Devon

Dartington and the School for Social Entrepreneurs (SSE) are delighted to announce the opening of the latest branch of the SSE in Devon.

The SSE provides support to pioneering individuals who are acting entrepreneurially for social benefit and positive change, rather than for personal profit. As part of its growth in the UK, and with recently secured funding from the Office of the Third Sector (OTS) at the Cabinet Office, a Devon SSE is being set up by a coalition of county wide organisations, led by The Dartington Hall Trust.

This coalition of Devon organisations  - The Dartington Hall Trust, Devon County Council, Torbay Council, South Devon College, Business Link and Cosmic  - have matched the grant from the OTS, with a combination of cash and in kind contributions.  Representatives from these organisations met recently at Dartington for the first meeting of the Devon SSE Steering Group.

Alastair Wilson, CEO of SSE UK said:

"We are hugely excited to see social entrepreneurs being supported in Devon to both learn and develop new skills and to create sustainable, effective organisations. Huge thanks and congratulations are due to all the partners and individuals who have been a part of making this happen; and, as a former SSE student myself, I look forward to meeting the social entrepreneurs who will start the first programme in January 2010"

Bristol - January 2010
Newcastle - March 2010

Find out more about the Department of Health's Social Enterprise Investment Fund (SEIF), at one of the regional workshops running from September 2009 - March 2010.

The SEIF provides investment and support to help existing and new social enterprises grow and deliver improvements to health or social care. The SEIF recognises that commissioners, as purchasers of these services, are working to stimulate diverse provider markets in which social enterprises play an integral role.

A series of regional one day workshops will bring commissioners, existing and new social enterprises together, to encourage greater understanding of the respective challenges they face.

The workshops will highlight the opportunities and benefits offered by building stronger relationships between service providers and the public sector. They aim to help to develop understanding of the current and future contribution that social enterprises can add to the delivery of primary and community care.

SEIF is managed on behalf of the Department of Health by Futurebuilders England Ltd, working together with Partnerships UK plc. The workshops have been developed, and will be delivered by Partnerships UK.

'How ethical are supermarket clothes?'

Sanjida O'Connell, The Guardian, 13 August

The cheapest T-shirt in Asda costs £1.50. You don't have to be a mathematician to calculate that this figure doesn't add up. Someone, somewhere bought that cotton seed, planted it, irrigated it, pumped it full of pesticides, fertilizers and herbicides, harvested it, sorted it, baled it, shipped it to another country, carded it, spun it, wove it, cut it, sewed it, packaged it, shipped it again, and sold it. For £1.50. If we're not paying the price of that cotton T-shirt, someone, somewhere is. Lee Holdstock, a textile consultant for the Soil Association, says, "There is no such thing as a cheap product. The consumer may not be paying at point of sale but there are hidden environmental and human costs."....

Regent University Center for Entrepreneurship
Transforming People and Nations through Business Summer 2009
Kingdom Entrepreneur

From the Director

Dr. John Mulford, Director of the Regent Center for EntrepreneurshipThe kingdom business and business as mission movements are exploding around the world. God is at work in so many nations and through so many organizations that it is hard to keep up. We are thankful for the part that we get to play in this exciting movement.

We are seeing our efforts multiplied in so many ways. Our partnership with Nehemiah International Project Ministries (NPIM) has helped them expand their teaching of Biblical Entrepreneurship (BE) not only in the U.S., but also in Eastern Europe and Latin America. Our partnership with the International Chamber of Commerce (ICCC) is about to bear fruit in two African countries plus Israel. And God used us to facilitate a meeting of key mission sending agencies who are in the midst of a great expansion of business as mission activities, but who have not had much time to share experiences and ideas with their peers about what the change means and how to accomplish it.

We praise God for the privilege we have of joining Him in these exciting times!

RCE and Regent University SGLE Collaborate

Regent Global Business Review (Journal Logo)Dr. John Mulford is guest editor of the next Regent Global Business Review, published by Regent University's School of Global Leadership & Entrepreneurship. The issue focuses on kingdom entrepreneurship as an engine of transformation. That is, entrepreneurs who are followers of Christ seeking to transform themselves and those around them through their businesses.

Mountain in Guatemala with crossRCE organized a conference of 1,000 pastors and business leaders in Guatemala in conjunction with the Luis Palau Festival in March 2009. Our goal was two-fold. First, we wanted these leaders to understand and embrace the concept of reaching the marketplace for Christ through kingdom business. Second, we wanted them to act on this understanding. To facilitate the latter, we brought presenters from nine organizations that prepare and support people in kingdom business.

Three of these organizations already had activities in Guatemala which were enhanced by the conference. Since the conference, three other organizations, which had never been to Guatemala, have returned to begin training programs there. God is already producing fruit from the seed we sowed in March!

Burundi and Beyond: Training Head, Heart and Hands

Flag of BurundiRCE is partnering with the International Christian Chamber of Commerce (ICCC) to launch Business Development Centers (BDC’s) that will train entrepreneurs and nurture them as they launch and grow businesses that will bless their nations economically and spiritually. The program will launch in Burundi this year. Plans are to open Centers in Liberia and Israel in the first half of 2010, followed by Rwanda and Benin.

John Mulford and Jason Benedict are developing the entrepreneurship curriculum. The training will be learner-centered and action-oriented in order to develop the skills entrepreneurs need to succeed. It program will also take a holistic approach, training the head, heart, and hands, so that the graduates know what works, align that knowledge with godly purpose, and then have the skills to implement what they know.

Although the BDC’s are designed to be self-sustaining and run by nationals in the long-run, we need start-up funding and volunteers to travel to Burundi to teach and mentor during the first iteration of the program. If you would like to support this effort with your time, expertise or finances, please contact Skye Ganbaatar.

Burundi is one of the poorest nations in the world. Please keep Burundi and the BDC in prayer!

Business Plan Competition, Atlanta

Atlanta skylineOne of the things we delight in doing here at the Center is bringing like-minded people together and helping them partner together. Dr. Bryan Crute, senior pastor of Destiny Metropolitan Church in Atlanta GA and Regent University alumnus, has a vision to transform his community through business.

Dr. Crute became certified in NPIM's Biblical Entrepreneurship training and began hosting the courses at his church. This investment is now bearing fruit in a business plan competition that will take place at the end of August. Center Director Dr. John Mulford will take part in the judging and will meet with Dr. Crute to discuss a model Business Development Center in the Atlanta metro.

Nations Through Business
. Because we are small and our vision is huge, we try to be a catalyst in the global kingdom business movement, amplifying the effort of others through strategic investment of our time, talent and treasure. Country Focus: Burundi, Nation of Possibilities

SCAIF's Bashingantahe Peace Building Programme uses dance to bring people togetherBurundi is a landlocked country with limited resources. Economic growth depends on coffee and tea exports. An ethnic-based war that lasted for over a decade resulted in more than 200,000 deaths, and similar numbers of displaced people. Only half of all children go to school, and food, medicine, and electricity are in short supply.

Burundi's GDP grew about 4% annually from 2006-08. Political stability has improved aid flow, and economic activity has increased. The new government, led by President Pierre Nkurunziza, signed a ceasefire with the country's last rebel group in 2006. However, underlying weaknesses like the high poverty rate, poor education rates, and weak legal system, are challenges that must be conquered in order for Burundi to thrive.
