Investor Spotlight: Omidyar Network

Each month, an impact investor discusses with the GIIN their motivations, their impact investment strategy, and challenges they face in this growing industry. This month, we spoke to Amy Klement, Vice President at Omidyar Network, a philanthropic investment firm providing grants, loans, and equity capital to entrepreneurs who foster positive economic, social, and political change. Omidyar Network was created by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar and his wife Pam, who believe that businesses, like nonprofits, can help make the world a better place.

GIIN Investors’ Council Welcomes Two New Members

ACCION's mission is to give people the financial tools they need - microloans, business training and other financial services - to work their way out of poverty. Since launching in 1991, ACCION has helped build 62 microfinance institutions reaching 4.9 million clients in 31 countries throughout the US, Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia. Through its Frontier Investments Group, ACCION also invests in breakthrough innovations that will radically improve the efficiency, reach, and scope of financial services at the base of the economic pyramid.

With leadership from its Global Sustainable Finance (GSF) group, Morgan Stanley works closely with investors and companies to support the development of long-term business models capable of achieving compelling financial, social and environmental returns.  GSF partners with the Firm’s other business units to invest in and/or intermediate investments in three areas in particular: Community Development in the US, Environment, and Social Finance.

The GIIN Celebrates its First Anniversary

One year ago this month, the Global Impact Investing Network was launched at the annual meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative. We were honored to celebrate our first year at a reception with J.P. Morgan Global Head of Research and GIIN board member Nick O’Donohoe, Rockefeller Foundation President Dr. Judith Rodin, and Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) President & CEO Elizabeth Littlefield.

* The picture above isn’t photoshopped – that’s a real GIIN cake, though the photograph has been color corrected by our fabulous design team at J Sherman Studio.

Impact Investing in Commercial African Agriculture
This report provides investors with an understanding of the emerging opportunities and key considerations when making high-impact investments in and across the agricultural value-chain, in addition to some of the common paths to avoid. The annexes also provide contact information for institutions in each of the countries profiled in the report.  Produced by Philip J. Riddell, this study received core funding from the Rockefeller Foundation, Aquifer Limited, Capricorn Investment Group LLC, Lundin for Africa, and Passport Capital.

Rising Global Interest in Farmland
This report, released earlier this month by The World Bank, calls on developing countries to recognize and respect resource rights of their people, warning that countries with poor records of formally recognized land tenure attract strong investor interest – which raises concerns about the ability to protect vulnerable people from losing their land. While highlighting benefits behind large scale land purchases, the report also calls for more transparency and monitoring of the social impact of such purchases.

News on The Edge
Welcome to the Social Edge update!

Traditional metrics such as SROI (social return on investment) should in theory help us compare nonprofits across issue areas by quantifying their level of performance.

“But in recent years, the push towards using metrics to judge social ventures has matured and moved towards a more holistic analysis,” writes Sean Stannard-Stockton, CEO of Tactical Philanthropy Advisors.

How do you know if your social venture is high-performing? Join him in the conversation to see how this new approach can prioritize “evidence of program impact” over “evidence of organizational performance.”

Then travel to Cambodia where Kiva Fellow Anjali Fleury reflects on how microfinance is contributing to the Millennium Development Goals, and follow Dr. O to learn how you can reach out to a new generation of younger donors, the Millennials.

Jonathan Lewis reports from the Clinton Global Initiative, where he heard Vikram Akula, founder of SKS Microfinance, and Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus.

While at CGI, he realized “the dubious value of social metrics for social investments serving the bottom of the economic pyramid” and asks: “Do social investors really need data to demonstrate that selling packets of soap, aspirin or other basic necessities to impoverished consumers is a good thing? Whatever happened to common sense?”

This Week's Live DiscussionNonprofit Analysis: Beyond Metrics
To quantify whether your social venture is high performing, you should discard simplistic measures and embrace a more holistic analysis. Sean Stannard-Stockton, CEO of Tactical Philanthropy Advisors, helps you understand the new SROI.

Mergers in Social Entrepreneurship
Why are mergers so rare –is it because of our ego and our reluctance to give up independence? Or is it the lack of profit motive? Join Rod Schwartz, CEO of ClearlySo, in the conversation.

The Case against Corporate Social Responsibility

Dear Friends,

I just returned from an incredible Social Venture Institute at Hollyhock Retreat Centre in British Columbia. Over 140 business leaders and social entrepreneurs gathered on beautiful Cortes Island to learn, collaborate, and recharge. Many thanks to Joel and Dana Solomon for hosting the event, and to Tami Simon, Terry McBride and Bruce Poon Tip for sharing their stories as True Confession speakers. If you're interested in joining us at next year's SVI at Hollyhock, please mark your calendars: September 14 - 18, 2011.

SVN's Fall Invitational is in just one month, and we look forward to seeing you there, along with visionary leaders such as Van Jones, Jonathan Rose, Nell Merlino, Jim Hightower, Phaedra Ellis Lamkins, Otto Scharmer, Katrina vanden Heuvel and many other amazing speakers. We are expecting this event to sell out, given the high response we've received so far, so please register soon if you haven't already. The conference will be held at Ocean Place Resort, October 21 -24 in Long Branch, New Jersey. To find out more and register, go to: www.svn.org/fall2010.

I would like to thank Raphael Bemporad, Mirran Raphaely and Josh Mailman for hosting a terrific NY Local Gathering in BBMG's new Brooklyn office last week. We hope to see many of you at our upcoming gatherings in San Francisco and Napa this month!

In service,

Deb Nelson

Give Something Back and Bolder Giving Tell Inc. How to Give

SVN members Mike Hannigan, founder of Give Something Back, and Christopher Ellinger, co-founder of Bolder Giving, were interviewed by Inc. Magazine on how companies can best incorporate philanthropy into their bottom lines and give at their full potential. They encourage entrepreneurs to find a support network by joining an organization like SVN or B Corp where you can learn from other business leaders. "Reach out to people who have done it before and find out what lessons they've learned," Hannigan recommends. Read the full article here.

Mark Albion on How to Lead Like a Monk, Architect and Diplomat

To research his book, True to Yourself: Leading a Values-Based Business, SVN member Mark Albion interviewed 75 SVN members on the challenge of scaling a business or non-profit from a founder-led endeavor to a second generation-led organization. What he found was that leadership abilities were the most consistent limiting factor. In this article in the Standford Social Innovation Review, Albion identifies three key leadership models needed to scale an enterprise: "1. Be a monk, not a father. 2. Be an architect, not a captain. 3. Be a diplomat, not a dictator." Click here to read the full article.

Take Action! ASBC Policy Update - Fair Elections
ASBC
The American Sustainable Business Council is working with Public Campaign to support the Fair Elections Now Act (H.R. 1826) and we need your help. With just a couple weeks left before members of Congress return to their district for the elections, time is running out to pass the Fair Elections Now Act. Getting it passed in the House this session sets up the opportunity for Senate passage in a lame duck session later this fall.

The bill can't pass unless House Speaker Nancy Pelosi moves it to the floor for a vote. Please call Speaker Pelosi's office in Washington DC at (202) 225-4965 or in San Francisco office at (415) 556-4862 urging her to move the Fair Elections Now Act to the floor. Please sign the online petition on this issue.
