Funding Structure Data
We are currently working on integrating funding structure  data into MIX Market. This will provide you insight into how MFIs are funded, sources of that debt, amount of loan, interest rate, and more. Look for this new data in MIX Market at the end of June, 2010.

Check out the Social Performance Indicators blog!   MIX and the SPTF have launched a blog to share ideas about social performance in microfinance, especially as it relates to measurement and evaluation. Timely discussions are an essential part of this blog, such as the recent entry titled Worse Than a War Zone: Sogesol Assesses the Damage in Haiti.

You can also find some preliminary analysis of the social performance data MIX has collected, including an overview of environmental policies.

The Social Performance Indicator blog is available in English, French and Spanish. Visit http://spblog.org.
New Research and Reports
MicroBanking Bulletin 19 MIX released the latest issue of the MBB, featuring benchmarks from 1084 MFIs. This is the first set of data to reflect the impact of the global economic slowdown on microfinance performance. Articles cover current issues including  the links between social performance and financial performance; new standards for evaluation; expanding savings mobilization; and the importance of pricing transparency.  Click here to access the MBB 19.

You can also download the MFI benchmarks that appear in the MBB 19 into an Excel file. Click here: 2008 MFI Benchmarks.

New Reports for the Latin America Region!  Our Latin America office and their partners have produced several new country reports on microfinance performance for 2008.  All reports are currently available in Spanish, and include Bolivia, Colombia, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, and Peru. To view all reports on the Latin America and Caribbean region, click here: LAC Reports.  Or visit MIX Market, and search for MFIs by regions.  Selecting LAC will provide you with an aggregate view of MFI performance, and access to all the recent reports for Latin America.

Currently 14 MFIs operate in Kosovo, covering 18 percent of the financial sector for the country.  This report, produced with MIX partner AMIK (Association of Microfinance Institutions of Kosovo) covers MFI financial performance and developments in the regulatory environment, and includes benchmarks on 7 MFIs.

Coming in February!
  • MIX Global 100 Composite Ranking MIX's annual ranking of MFIs, using a composite approach to measure how well financially sound MFIs expand access to low cost services for microfinance clients. These factors include outreach, efficiency, transparency and profitability.
  • Africa Regional Report Findings show that this region has more than twice the number of depositors as borrowers, and the number of depositors is growing much more quickly. At the same time, loan portfolio is greater than total deposits.
  • Eastern Europe and Central Asia Regional Report: The effects of the global economic slowdown are already reflected in slower growth rate for MFIs in this region. Balanced trend data for 122 MFIs show growth in outreach increased in 2007 by 34%, but by 2008 growth had slowed to 18%.
  • Check our websites for the new reports, due out in February.

    Dear friends,

In recent weeks, the world has watched Haiti struggle with the aftermath of two devastating earthquakes and countless aftershocks. Long-term Oikocredit project partner Fonkoze has 41 offices in Haiti. The Fonkoze team is now working hard to reach its 33,000 clients around the country and we are closely monitoring the needs of Fonkoze to see how we can assist. Support Fonkoze directly:

In our first Ezine for this year, we look back on a successful 2009 - both socially and financially.

Recently, Oikocredit received last year's preliminary, non-audited results, reflecting a solid performance despite a precarious economic climate (details in Facts & Figures and Corporate News). 2009 also saw important issues arise in the sector, including the threat of serious debt to microfinance borrowers, in a rapidly expanding market (for the full report, see Corporate News).

If your friends, family or colleagues are interested in socially responsible investing, forward this Ezine to show them how Oikocredit's investors and project partners make a difference in the lives of the poor.

    January 2010 Newsletter

Social Ventures Australia (SVA) works with innovative non-profit organisations to increase their growth and impact to drive transformational social change. Our activities are focused on three areas - supporting a selected portfolio of non-profit organisations, consulting to the broader non-profit sector and developing social sector partnerships.
      A rare opportunity for immersion

Chanoa Cooper In November 2009, members of the SVA Indigenous Investor Circle and supporters witnessed the valuable work SVA venture partner, Ganbina, is undertaking in the Indigenous community in Shepparton Victoria. In this article, Indigenous Investor Circle participant Paula McLean, reflects on the visit and the impact Ganbina is having on improving the lives of young Indigenous community members, particularly in regard to their economic participation.

    Read Paula’s article here.
A more connected way of giving
Food Connect From June 2008 to June 2009 Gabi Donovan, Senior Human Capital Relationship Manager with PwC in Brisbane, worked as a mentor with the social enterprise Food Connect providing ongoing support, focus and guidance.

This opportunity was an initiative of SVA’s Brisbane Social Enterprise Hub which is a collaborative partnership between SVA, Brisbane City Council and PricewaterhouseCoopers. The Hub provides business development support to local social entrepreneurs and community organisations that are establishing or growing a social enterprise.

Find out why Gabi believes the experience was so worthwhile for her personally, as she reminds us that there is a whole world away from our day-to-day lives that can benefit from our skills and knowledge.

SVA meets His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama
Daial Lama In December 2009, His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama visited Australia and through SVA’s relationship with the Board of Dalai Lama in Australia, we were privileged to be able to offer to a small group of supporters the rare opportunity to meet and dine with His Holiness.

SVA supporters Paul and Lenore Robertson attended the event and you can read their reflections on their experience here.

A new kind of social investment approach
In December 2009 a syndicate of four non-profit organisations, including SVA, were announced as the preferred bidder in the sale process for the acquisition of ABC Learning childcare centres. GoodStart will operate as a non-profit organisation itself, ensuring all surplus funds will be reinvested to improve early childhood learning and care at the 678 childcare centres GoodStart will manage. Read more about the acquisition and SVA’s role here.

SVA’s role in the development of GoodStart is a great practical example of the evolution and maturing of SVA. SVA’s heritage has been in supporting and generating innovative solutions to social problems, and over time SVA has realised there is as much opportunity for innovation in the way in which solutions are funded, as there are in the solutions themselves.

Michael Trail This is demonstrated by the model used to fund GoodStart Ltd, which included a number of private philanthropists providing a layer of ‘social capital’. Read more about these new types of investment models in an article by SVA’s CEO Michael Traill that appeared in Business Spectator.

Partners Worldwide: Your Support Can Help Restart Business in Haiti!

    $Account.OrganizationName

As we reflect on the current situation in Haiti after two weeks of disaster relief and rescue, we pray that God will give us not only the stamina of a marathon runner, but also the urgency of a sprinter. The reality is that the long-term recovery and rebuilding in Haiti will require ongoing support, long after the updates are no longer in the nightly news.

Below are six business owners in Haiti who possess the stamina of a marathoner. They built their businesses in Haiti, and saw their life's work crumble in an instant. These men and women are committed to Haiti for the long-run, and they have identified critical needs that can be met through your financial support. Your contribution will help restore local businesses that supply critical goods such as clean water, food, medical supplies and housing.

As the board chair of our business affiliate, Haitian Partners for Christian Development, Evelien de Gier wrote in an update this week, "Normal life seems to start again more and more, just like we have seen after hurricanes and coups d'etat: the merchants at the side of the road are appearing, little shops are reopening, then even bigger shops are opening their doors, and today even some banks. . . And we are more determined than ever to help create employment with real jobs: real work with real earned money!"

    Regent Global Business Review--Kingdom Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurs are change agents. They invent or introduce new products and services, new business models, and even whole new industries. Their ideas influence people’s thinking and their companies provide opportunities for personal growth and economic prosperity.

In the current issue of the Regent Global Business Review, we focus on kingdom entrepreneurship as an engine of transformation. That is, entrepreneurs who are followers of Christ seeking to transform themselves and those around them through their businesses.

Regent Global Business Review logoArticles discuss transforming nations through kingdom entrepreneurship, companies that have generated kingdom transformation, the role of the organized church in transformative entrepreneurship, and encouraging signs that investing in entrepreneurs in economically challenged areas of Africa is having an impact and making a difference.

The Latest From the SSIR Blog

Perla Ni: Don't Give Money to Haiti Now

If there is any lesson to be learned about how to donate to international disasters, it is this: don't give your money when you first see the disaster splashed across TV.

To ensure the rebuilding effort survives over the long term, donors need to stagger their funding and guarantee it over many years, instead of sending the money all at once.

Yes, as hard as it may be to watch the dying and pain on our news, realize that money is not the impediment to getting aid to Haiti right now. They need military and security forces to help organize rescue, logistics and transport and security operations.

What your money can do is help the long-term food and medical aid necessary while rebuilding takes place. It will be a rebuilding that will take years, if not decades. >>Click here to continue reading

SSIR Named One of the Top 10 Moments of the Decade in Social Entrepreneurship

Change.org includes SSIR's first issue on a recent top 10 list

A recent list compiled by Change.org counted the Stanford Social Innovation Review's first issue as one of the top 10 moments of the decade in social entrepreneurship. According to Change.org:

First Issue of Stanford Social Innovation Review (Spring 2003):
The 2000s saw a huge number of academic programs based around social entrepreneurship and innovation. Indeed, it's increasingly a prerequisite that MBA programs have significant social innovation offerings. I've chosen the publishing of the first issue of the Stanford Social Innovation Review as the moment to capture this movement because, as any good academic will tell you, every field needs a journal. Since 2003, SSIR has been the place to get into the real research and scholarship behind our field. >>Click here to see the other top 10

Book Review: How Scale and Innovation Can Coexist

THE DESIGN OF BUSINESS: Why Design Thinking Is the Next Competitive Advantage by Roger L. Martin

Many books and articles support the view that an organization must choose between creating value through innovation and creating value by building scale and wringing out cost. The thinking styles and capabilities required for success appear to be diametrically opposed. Innovators are right-brained people who rely heavily on their intuition, whereas the leaders of large, efficiency-oriented organizations achieve results through rigorous, continuously repeated analytical processes and reject decisions based on instinct and judgment.

In The Design of Business, Roger Martin contends that organizations can balance intuitive originality and analytic mastery in a dynamic interplay that he calls design thinking. This approach is necessary, according to Martin, to maintain long-term competitive advantage. >>Continue reading this review
