The Ministry of Sustainable Economic Development

Sustainable DevelopmentThe Business Professional Network (BPN) is an organization that engages in ways to encourage and support “missions through business.” One of their recent projects is with Iglesia El Encuentro, in Bogotá, Colombia, which has a successful, financially sustainable economic development program that was started with less than $10,000. The program is an outgrowth of the church’s outreach to poor communities in Southern Bogotá.

Iglesia El Encuentro began the economic development program as a response to the pressing need to create jobs for poor people in places where the church had previously initiated programs for malnourished children in the mid-1990s.

Raising Capital: Guardian Seminar

In just under two weeks we'll be heading to the Guardian offices for a seminar on raising capital. This aims to answer two of the most pressing concerns of entrepreneurs: where is the money and how can they get it? Chaired by ClearlySo's Rodney Schwartz and including contributions from Michele Giddens of Bridges Ventures, Susan Ralphs of Ethical Property Company and Sue Peters of the Social Investment Business, this will take a look at the issue from all sides.

More information can be found here. Look forward to seeing you there.

ClearlySo Social Business Conference
Conf
Dothe GeenThing founder Andy Hobsbawm at last year's conference

Early details of the ClearlySo Social Business Conference are now available online. Now in its sixth year it will, as always, deliver practical and useful advice to social businesses and enterprises.

This year's theme is 'all shapes and sizes' - a celebration of all social businesses large or small. As always you can see a visible demonstration of this in our pitch from the floor sessions and the grand finale in which selected entrepreneurs present their businesses to the entire floor.

Last year was bigger than ever. Let's hope to beat it in 2011. To find out more head to our brand new conference page.

Donors Provide Light for 2,175 Households in East Timor through d.light's Give Light Program

Thanks to the generosity of supporters like you, d.light and our NGO partner Kopernik have raised enough money to subsidize a d.light S250 and a d.light S10 for 2,175 households in Oecusse, one of the poorest districts in East Timor.

Donors have thus far contributed nearly USD78,000 for Oecusse, where less than one percent of the population has access to electricity. As a result, about 11,000 of the district's 67,000 residents can experience the benefits of solar lighting. They can immediately begin saving up to USD20 a month, which would normally be spent on kerosene, and experience improved productivity, health, and safety.

Watch this video from Kopernik to see the positive impact that d.light products and other innovations are having in East Timor. You can also view other opportunities through Kopernik to provide d.light products to people in need.

Customer Story: Martins, a Frozen Fish Shop Owner in Nigeria, Enjoys the d.light S10

Martins

Martins lives with his wife and four children in the town of Guninguna in northern Nigeria. He sells frozen fish in a shop along the town's most popular road, while his wife operates a kitchen tools outlet nearby. Because Guninguna often experiences power cuts, Martins had to use three battery-powered LED lamps for his shop. Every five days, he had to replace four batteries in each lamp, which cost him 600 Naira (about USD3.88) each time.

Now Martins uses a single d.light S10 to illuminate his shop in the evening, saving him over USD15 per month. After closing his shop, he takes the light home for his family to use as a bedlight throughout the night.

‘S10 is something which lasts," Martins tells us. "Mr. Alico [his fish wholesaler] told me that if it even falls it will not break. Sometimes I do not solar charge it for three days and it still gives light…Not big but really powerful!’
