The Fortune Magazine named Prof. Yunus as one of 12 greatest entrepreneurs of our time
  • Those were great news! Prof. Yunus has been selected as one of the 12 greatest entrepreneurs of our times.
  • This list prepared by The Fortune magazine has been published on http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2012/news/companies/1203/gallery.greatest-entrepreneurs.fortune/13.html.
  • It places Prof. Yunus in company of a highly exclusive group of individuals like Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg or Bill Gates, all of whom are known throughout the world for their innovation, vision and ability to get things done.
  • Interesting fact: ten of these entrepreneurs are American, one is an Indian and one is Bangladeshi.

BASF Grameen launched Bangladesh’s First Long Lasting Impregnated Net Plant
  • BASF Grameen Limited, a social business joint venture between BASF, the world's leading chemical company, and Grameen Healthcare Trust of Bangladesh, can now source from a local production plant located in the Social Business Industrial Park in Sarabo, Bangladesh.
  • The plant owned and operated by Grameen Fabrics & Fashions Limited will manufacture long lasting insecticide impregnated nets under the brand name Interceptor® that can prevent malaria infections effectively.
  • These nets will be distributed in rural areas through door-to-door salesby Grameen sales ladies, who are earning a commission from their sales.
  • BASF Grameen Limited was formed in 2009 to improve health and business opportunities of the poor of Bangladesh, who would not have had this possibility on their own. The Interceptor® mosquito nets are the first product of this venture which aims to reduce insect-borne diseases, thus contributing to achieve key UN Millennium Development Goals related to health.

Great ideas developed during Social Business Lab held at EBS University in Germany
  • In the beginning of April GCL conducted a Social Business Lab at the EBS University in Wiesbaden.
  • The EBS University was not only host of the event but actively participated with students.
  • We welcomed 35 highly motivated guests from corporations, universities and NGOs from different parts of Germany to the lab.
  • During the lab the concept of social business and social business best practices were presented to the participants. Followed by four different breakout sessions, the participants were working together on social business plans and developed great ideas.
  • One workshop focused on “Age as an Asset”, how to use the potential of elderly people through social business. The developed idea has great potential for implementation!  Other topics included “Social Business City”, “Youth unemployment” and “Malnutrition in developing countries”.

Age as an Asset – Social Business conference at EBS University in Germany
  • On April 25 and 26 a conference on social business and aging boomers “Age as an Asset” took place at the EBS University in Oestrich-Winkel.
  • In the time of a constantly aging population in Germany, EBS University and Danone Germany staged this first conference on social business and aging under the auspice of the German Minister for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, Dr. Kristina Schröder.
  • The two days conference brought together international researchers, policy makers, business leaders and practitioners to discuss trends and strategies and to explore possibilities of social business and entrepreneurial activities related to demographic change and an aging society.
  • GCL actively engaged in the discussions and Prof. Yunus had sent a personal video message, which can be viewed here.

Social Business Lab held at ESPM in Brazil
  • GCL and ESPM organized a Social Business Lab on April the 23rd and 24th at ESPM Campus in São Paulo.  It was the first Social Business Lab at a University in Brazil.
  • Professors, students and professionals interacted and discussed social business concepts and international cases. Five teams brainstormed social business ideas to fight corruption, to reduce child mortality rate, to improve quality education and to reduce waste. All with joy!
  • The workshop was an enthusiastic starting point for ESPM to develop concrete ideas towards launching its Social Business Center during the second semester of 2012 in partnership with GCL.
  • Take a look at the Social Business Lab report at http://bit.ly/JZAt3f

Hult Global Case Challenge in New York
  • Our partner Hult International Business School organized the Hult Global Case Challenge, the largest international idea competition with prize money of 1 Mio $ to solve social problems in the fields of education, housing and energy.
  • Following five regional finals in London, Shanghai, Boston, San Francisco and Dubai, the Global Final took place in New York on April 26.
  • Next to President Bill Clinton, Prof. Yunus gave a key note speech and awarded the three winning teams from NYU Abu Dhabi, Hult Boston and Carnegie Mellon. You can watch his speech here.

Social Business Day 2012 is coming up
  • On 28th of June it is time again for Social Business Day! On this day we celebrate the concept of social business as well as Prof. Yunus' birthday.
  • It is the one day where you can connect with the social business community worldwide and feel the YY spirit at its best!
  • In Dhaka, Bangladesh Social Business Day will be celebrated with a two day conference with inspiring speakers and interactive workshops. More information can be found on http://www.socialbusinessday.net/. Deadline for registration is 10th June 2012.
  • GCL will host a get-together in Wiesbaden, Germany, where you can get in touch with the team and connect with the social business community. Check the GCL website in the next days for updates!

car2go San Diego Cruises to Success

Denizens of America’s Finest City may have noticed a cavalcade of small blue and white vehicles traversing the city from Pacific Beach to the Gaslamp Quarter in recent months. These vehicles are part of North America’s first electric carsharing network known as car2go. Launched in November 2011, car2go now has over 6,000 registered users in San Diego, with more people registering every day. With fuel costs on the rise, car2go is an ideal way to save money and lessen your carbon footprint. Members must first register and after several days will receive a membership card that will activate car2go upon being swiped against the vehicle’s windshield. What sets car2go apart from traditional carsharing programs is that car2go gives users access to the vehicle for as much time as they want, without committing to return the vehicle at a specific time or destination.

car2go also assumes all responsibility for maintenance, fueling, parking and insurance. One of the added bonuses of using ca2go in San Diego is the ability to park at metered spots without having to put money into the meter. car2go San Diego currently has 300 vehicles in its fleet with more on the way, and each vehicle features FM radio, GPS navigation system, roadside assistance and 24 hour customer support, with more features and upgrades on the way.

Doing Well And Doing Good: Measuring The Results Of Impact Investing | Blog | Social Finance

In my last post “Measuring The Impact of Social Investing”, I talked a lot about the history of PULSE, the software designed to help track the impact of social investments. Since Acumen Fund first introduced it in 2006, we have seen a constant and increasing need for support, services and even entire organizations to help the impact investing community operate more efficiently and achieve greater success.

Thanks to organizations like the Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN), we now have a taxonomy and structure in place to help improve the transparency and reporting of social investing returns. The implementation of the Impact Reporting and Investment Standards (IRIS) has arguably done more to increase the credibility of the social benefits of impact investing than anything the industry has seen to date.

On April 12, the Global Impact Investing Rating System (GIIRS) released its first-ever impact investing analytics report [PDF], which provides comprehensive and verified data on the social and environmental impact of a broad range of investments on a global scale. The release of this report – which the organization now plans to release quarterly – further demonstrates the increasing attention being paid to measuring the impact of social investments.

Increased adoption of PULSE software is yet another indication of the growing importance of metrics among impact investors. With the formation of organizations like GIIN and the adoption of processes like IRIS and GIIRS, we’ve seen a continually increasing demand for software that is compatible with the new taxonomy and impact investing ratings system. In fact, PULSE has been adopted by organizations representing the six major continents, which we attribute largely to the overall increased awareness of measuring the impact of social investments and a universally standard taxonomy.

For example:

  • The Opportunity for the Majority (OMJ) window within the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has implemented PULSE and the IRIS taxonomy to track metrics around individual investments across its entire portfolio. OMJ supports efforts to reduce poverty and inequality specifically focusing on the Base of the Pyramid (BOP) in Latin American and Caribbean countries. The IDB team is using its up-to-date information about investment performance as well as performance across sectors and regions to be more selective about the investments they choose. The automated system for gathering and analyzing data also means employees who were previously tasked with data entry can now focus more of their efforts on what they’re good at – finding deals and serving clients. Beyond increasing proficiency, the OMJ team was able to collaborate and meet every deadline. They achieved this level of performance by establishing milestones and tasks which lead to weekly meetings. These activities lead to higher results, better communication, and strong management support. To find more details about OMJ’s use of PULSE, download the full case study from our website.
  • Inveneo, a non-profit social enterprise based in San Francisco, California, works to provide technology such as computers, telephone and Internet access to rural communities in underdeveloped parts of the world. In 2011 alone, the organization reached 126 communities and served approximately 250,000 end users, the impact of which is all tracked, recorded and analyzed using PULSE software.
  • MicroVest Capital Management has implemented PULSE software to help track and benchmark financial, operational, environmental and social data to better demonstrate the impact of its microfinance funds. By replacing its spreadsheet-driven data analytics processes with an automated reporting system that works with Salesforce.com, the fund manager is digging deeper into its numbers and more easily comparing them to external benchmarks. Like IDB, MicroVest employees are able to use time they previously spent validating and crosschecking data on deal structuring and analysis.

We fully expect to see the gap between philanthropy and capitalism continue to shrink over the coming months and years, as both corporations face pressure to provide social benefit and social organizations are encouraged to demonstrate measurable results. Together with organizations like GIIN and tools like IRIS and GIIRS, we’re optimistic that our PULSE software puts us all one step closer to solving the world’s problems.

Charlie Kuhn is responsible for PULSE business development at Application Experts (www.app-x.com). He can be reached at 720-240-9168 or charlie@app-x.com.
