PDSA

The Global Peter Drucker Forum 2011 on November 3 and 4 was a great success. We have received very positive feed-back from participants and the media regarding speakers, content, organization and location. The video documentation is now available (see below).
The Global Peter Drucker Forum 2012 Forum will take place on November 15 and 16 in Vienna. Theme for 2012 will be "Capitalism 2.0". In a turbulent world with huge transformations under way, systemic changes in our economic and social fabric will be required to address these unprecedented challenges. Managers have a key role in accompanying and shaping the transformation towards an improved capitalist system, where market driven efficiency and the concern for a functioning society are better aligned.
In case you intend to participate in the 2012 Forum, please send a mail to Sylvie Herman so that we can ensure that you are being informed about the key preparatory steps towards the Forum.
Visit the new Drucker Forum Website with full Documentation online
At the occasion of the 2011 Forum we have proudly announced our new Drucker Forum Website and we invite you to visit it. Much of the Forum Documentation is online by now on this website. You will find the videos by speaker under http://bit.ly/uqXK5r – you will enjoy brilliant speeches from Doris Drucker, Charles Handy, Rakesh Khuran, Mark Kramer, Julia Middleton, Adrian Wooldridge and many others. Under this link please find an article by Stefan Stern summarizing his perspective on the Forum.
Stay updated in real time via Twitter @GDruckerForum
As we advance towards strengthening the community we will use Twitter to communicate real time about the preparation of the 2012 Forum providing information relating to the theme, speakers and the program. Please join us at @GDruckerForum. In case of questions please contact Jean-Alexis Spitz, our social media and community manager.
I would like to conclude with a quote from a great supporter and mentor of the Drucker Society – Charles Handy, who has just received the lifetime achievement award from Thinkers50. "I go to many conferences, but the Drucker Forums have been consistently the most interesting. The participants come from all around the world and a great variety of organizations, but the bonus is that they are all linked by a common interest in the ideas of Peter Drucker."
On behalf of the Peter Drucker Society Team I wish you and your families Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Best regards
Richard Straub
President Peter Drucker Society Europe

NEW VENTURES LOCAL CENTER NEWS
New Ventures Mexico Named Outstanding National Accelerator of 2011
New Ventures Mexico received el Galardon PyME 2011, recognizing their accelerator program as the country's top accelerator for the year.  The ceremony, led by Miguel Maron Manzur, Undersecretary of Small and Medium Enterprises for the Ministry of Economy, took place during Mexico's National SME Week.  Manzur referred to Rodrigo Villar, New Ventures Mexico Director, as a "visionary," and one of the first to promote green business in Mexico.  Congratulations to the New Ventures Mexico team!
New Ventures India Company Nandan Cleantec PLC Goes Public
Nandan, which focuses on the production of the biofuel jatropha, will hold its initial public offering (IPO) on AIM, which is the London Stock Exchange's international market for smaller, growing companies.  Nabarro LLP, which is advising Nandan on its IPO, has valued the company at approximately $259.5 million.  After 8 years of extensive research, Nandan has developed and received global patents for four hybrids of jatropha seeds with higher oil yield and new cultivation methods that maximize production.  The 40,000 acres of jatropha allow Nadan to sequester 3.2 million tons of carbon.  Jatropha biofuels provide clean energy to large communities and replace polluting, GHG-intensive options.  Nandan currently provides a steady income to over 15,000 small farmers.

New Ventures China Forums Deepen In-Country Collaboration to Support Environmental SMEs
New Ventures China hosted two forums in Shenzhen and Shunde on November 17 and 19, respectively, in collaboration with the Information Center of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). The two events, under the umbrella of the annual High-Tech Fair and Exhibition in Shenzhen, mark a solid step taken by New Ventures to deepen its in-country collaboration, particularly at the government level.  During the main forum on November 17 in Shenzhen, a city bordering Hong Kong, New Ventures China announced the upcoming launch of a report on the Green Impact of Chinese SMEs in collaboration with the Information Center of MIIT.  The report is scheduled to come out in March 2012.
Investor Forums Take Place in Colombia and Indonesia
New Ventures Colombia's forum, held in Bogota in September, was organized by BiD Network, la Facultad de Administracion de la Universidad de los Andes, el Ministerio de Comercio, Industrio y Turismo de Colombia, CREAME, and New Ventures. The forum, entitled "Growing SMEs," featured entrepreneur presentations and matchmaking sessions alongside sessions on how to grow an enabling environment for SMEs in Colombia.
New Ventures India hosted its investor forum in Mumbai on December 12. The forum included sessions on water and clean energy for all, and a special showcase of environmental entrepreneurs from across Asia, including China and Indonesia. The investor forum, now in its sixth year, drew together a diverse crowd of investors to meet the presenting companies and to discuss environmental entrepreneurship in India.
Strategic Plan Released by New Ventures Indonesia

In December, New Ventures Indonesia released its strategic plan for 2012. The document sends a clear message of the direction NVI is taking to increase impact in 2012, setting specific and measurable business targets and focus areas for the coming year.  The Indonesian market, and the Indonesian renewable energy sector in particular, provides an increasingly attractive investment proposition for both traditional and impact investors. Foreign investors are beginning to evaluate the most attractive market segments to invest in. As the Indonesian Government continues to communicate a strong dedication to promoting and enabling the renewable energy sector, this presents exciting business and investment opportunities.

UPCOMING EVENTS

GIULIA CHRISTIANSON JOINS NEW VENTURES AS RESEARCH OFFICER
Giulia Christianson is the new Research Officer for New Ventures.  Her role is to lead the research and Global Portfolio investment facilitation initiatives for the program.  Giulia's research agenda for 2012 will include country market briefs and Global Portfolio case studies, and she is also exploring opportunities to tie New Ventures into the wider green economy/green growth discussions that are happening at the international organization level (UN, OECD, etc).
Giulia earned a BA in Economics, International Relations, and Political Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  She worked for several years as a research assistant and projects officer at the International Monetary Fund before leaving to complete an MBA at Columbia Business School.  While in business school, Giulia worked on growth and green business strategy projects in Brazil and Thailand, respectively, and consulted for the New York City Mayor's Office of Long Term Planning and Sustainability.
ENTREPRENEUR OF THE MONTH: SHANGHAI PEARL
Shanghai Pearl Hydrogen, a hydrogen fuel cell company that is part of the New Ventures China portfolio, is currently one of the top three hydrogen fuel cell manufacturers in the world.  The company's success has come from its ability to simplify the structure of hydrogen fuel cells and lower their cost. Pearl now provides a reliable alternative energy source within China.  In October, Mr. Steve Shi of Pearl Hydrogen traveled to the United States to speak about his experiences and challenges as an entrepreneur at the 2011 Annual ANDE (Aspen Network for Development Entrepreneurs) conference.

News from rise

Social Enterprise Mark to continue support for South West social enterprises

Following the announcement of the forthcoming closure of rise, the rise membership has now overwhelmingly voted for assets to be transferred to its subsidiary, the Social Enterprise Mark Company

Following the rise Extraordinary General Meeting where the rise membership voted to dissolve rise, the Board sought legal advice and held a postal vote to determine the future of rise assets.  It asked members to vote on 3 resolutions (1 from the rise Board and 2 from other members).  The vote attracted a record turnout with 84 of the 97 members voting (representing more than 86% of the membership).   An overwhelming majority of 88% of those voting (or 76% of the membership) supported the rise Directors’ proposal to transfer remaining assets to the Social Enterprise Mark Company and to set up a Legacy Trust. To ensure transparency and accountability, South West Social Enterprise Mark holders will be the main shareholder of the Mark Company through the rise Legacy Trust. This will ensure that dividends paid out in respect of this shareholding will be used for the benefit of social enterprises in South West England. In line with this development, work is also underway to revamp the governance of the Mark Company including the make up of the Board of Directors.

Andrew North, Chair of the Board of Directors, stated:

“The rise Board of Directors would like to thank members for all the messages of support and also to thank them for their cooperation and encouragement at this difficult time, and most of all, for voting in such numbers.  This vote has resoundingly demonstrated democratically the legitimacy of the Social Enterprise Mark as the important legacy for rise.  The good news is that the Legacy Trust will also ensure that there is recognition of the fact that the South West region was key in the foundation of the Mark.  The rise Board and I know that the Mark will continue the good work and reputation of rise into the future.   This has already been demonstrated by the hugely successful launch of the 50in250 campaign, recently launched with the support of the City of London Corporation.

We are also pleased to advise that social enterprises in Torbay and Plymouth will continue to receive FREE business support and that rise’s contract for marketing this business support will be delivered by Peninsula Enterprise, e: info@peninsula-enterprise.co.uk.”

Riders News
Riders for Health is an award-winning social enterprise working to make sure all health workers in Africa have access to reliable transportation so they can reach the most isolated people with regular and predictable health care.
December 2011
Headline Quicklinks

Riders for Health in KenyaThe New York Times have highlighted Riders for Health as one of seven organisations who are a great example of ‘giving where it works’. We think it is very important that people who support our work can be confident that their donation will have a real impact. That is why we are very proud that our work has been recognised by the New York Times.
The new column is part of the newspaper’s Fixes series, which looks at practical solutions to major social problems. The article, which was published on 29 November, said of the seven highlighted organisations: ‘Like all the ideas we’ve highlighted in Fixes, they are proven to work. All of them spend a relatively small amount now to create huge savings down the road. But these are also programs where a little bit of money can make a huge difference.’
To make a donation to Riders for Health click here, or to find out exactly how your support helps, click here. To read the original Fixes column, click here.

Support Riders for Health this ChristmasThis Christmas please support Riders for Health and help us get on the road to better health care in Zambia. Thanks to a generous grant we can buy a fleet of 60 motorcycles for the Southern Province of Zambia. With this, Riders for Health could make an immediate impact on the health of 500,000 people– but we need your help.
Zambia is incredibly beautiful, yet also desperately poor. There are urgent health needs – people are dying from easily preventable and treatable diseases.
It costs just £6.50 to deliver one day of health care in Southern Zambia, can you give a gift this Christmas? By sending a gift today, you can help kick start this life-saving new programme in the New Year.
Riders for Health's programme in Southern Zambia will help health workers like Kenneth Daka. Kenneth spends the majority of his time in the remote communities where preventative health care is so vital. To find out more about a typical day on the road, click here to read his diary.

Experience AfricaWe all like to do things for charity. But suppose we did something that called for getting up in the morning and facing the realities of rural Africa – out there where people really do live, in spite of everything.
The Riders for Health Experience Africa ride in Zambia took place in late November and 18 participants joined GP legend Randy Mamola and current MotoGP star Alvaro Bautista, on the adventure of a lifetime.
The adventures started in Lusaka and made their very interesting way along sand and dirt roads. Through villages and farms and towns. They stopped to talk, stopped to listen and stopped to understand what so many visitors to Africa miss: the vitality, the humour and the pretty-well unfailing good nature of the hospitable people in that hard but thrilling landscape.
To find out how you can join Riders for Health’s next Experience Africa adventure in 2012, email experienceafrica@riders.org for more information. Or, to find out more about Experience Africa 2011, click here.

Riders for Health’s work was recognised this month when it came third in the International Health Promotion Awards, which took place on the 5th-6th December in Rome.
Impact update: The GambiaAn expert panel of judges, comprising of health care professionals from around the world, chose the twelve finalists that most demonstrated innovation and success in improving individual’s lives in the community and workplace. Representatives from each organisation then had to present their programme in Rome to the judging panel. Riders for Health’s presentation was given by our monitoring and evaluation manager, Kat Harrison.
Kat said: ‘We are very proud to take part in this competition. All of the finalists were incredible and I was really pleased that we were specifically recognised by the judges. I think that this really shows what an amazing job all of our teams in Africa are doing and how much it is helping people in rural communities receive the health care they need. I collected this award on behalf of our teams across Africa and in the UK and USA. I would also like to thank all of our supporters. Without them, the impact we are having would not be possible.’

TBN Members Day at Warren House
Members Day Content
The Members Day conference on the 3rd December 2011 was a great success and we enjoyed networking with new members of TBN, hearing about some amazing new projects fighting poverty all over the world, and had the chance to discuss the areas TBN will be focussing on in the next few years. Presentations from the conference have been posted on our website and audio & video recordings will follow shortly.
Impact Investment research into IFA channel
Some exciting research is being undertaken into the opportunities and challenges in the IFA market for Impact Investment. Nick O’Donohoe writes "We believe that developing the IFA market is crucial to the overall development of social investing in the UK [and] are very supportive of [this research] which will help ensure the social investment market embraces IFA needs and regulatory challenges when developing product solutions for clients.” The full press release is on our website.

Food Development Company investment opportunity
Chris Grace, who presented at the 2011 Members Day, established the Food Development Company (FDC) in 2009 with the aim of creating a portfolio of micro food enterprises, applying commercial market based strategies to achieve sustainable social, ethical and environmental objectives as well as a viable and profitable business. The Transylvania Food Company Srl (TFC) was registered as the first operational enterprise in February 2010 and signed a partnership agreement with a UK food & drinks manufacturer to supply produce. The TFC now has five year rolling supply contracts to produce at least 152,000 litres of raw elder flower juice per year, is building new facilities, and is moving into new markets. The TFC is showing strong economic, social and environmental impact in the area. They have so far raised £360,000 from 12 investors in a combination of debt and equity and are now seeking to raise a further £150,000 to complete the construction work, to purchase further process equipment and vehicles and to recruit more staff. More details are at www.FoodDevCo.com and if you'd like to talk about this investment opportunity please contact Chris on boomtangexpress@yahoo.co.uk or 01932 843 632.

Help Needed

Water purification technology
Business guidance and investment needed for new water purification technology
TBN member Philip Monro has patented some impressive new membrane technology which could have significant commercial demand as well as humanitarian and development impact, particularly in water purification and food distrubution. He is seeking business people to get around him and help develop and launch his commercial business plans. He would also welcome investment into the technology and businesses. If you could help Philip take this further, or just want more details, please get in touch on hatsltd@aol.com
TBN Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe, a nation in transition and a marketplace in need of transformation.
