Social Ventures Australia (SVA) invests in social change by helping increase the impact and build the sustainability of those in the social sector. Our investments are focused on high potential organisations that are fostering solutions to some of the most pressing challenges facing our community.

New support for social enterprises in Western Australia
WA State Government SVA is leading a consortium that will be supporting social enterprise development in Western Australia, thanks to an initiative from the State Government of Western Australia - a $10 million Social Enterprise Fund Grants Program (SEF).

SEF aims to increase the number, effectiveness and efficiency of social enterprises in Western Australia by supporting not-for-profit community sector organisations to establish new or strengthen existing social enterprises. The consortium will provide a support service on behalf of the State Government of Western Australia to ensure the effective delivery of the SEF. Find out more.

Procurement achieving social outcomes
BARK Andrew Hamilton from SVA's Employment team has witnessed firsthand how procurement decisions can deliver greater bang for buck if value is placed on the social outcomes that can be achieved. Highlighting the example of Townsville based social enterprise BARK – Brothers Act of Random Kindness - Andrew tells how Townsville City Council is providing sustainable employment and training opportunities for Indigenous locals marginalised from mainstream employment (see photo to the right), through smart procurement decisions. Read the full story here.

Two new venture partners
CareerTrackers The SVA Employment team continues to expand their efforts to create employment pathways for Australians who are either at risk of falling into employment exclusion, or are already excluded from the labour market, recently forming two new partnerships.

CareerTrackers Indigenous Internship Program is a national non-profit social enterprise that creates private sector internship opportunities for Indigenous university students, providing coaching, mentoring and support to interns along the way.

Catherine House Adelaide based Catherine House provides a range of innovative programs and services to single adult women experiencing homelessness. Its recently established social business WorkNext, is a fee-for-service job placement service aimed at securing long-lasting sustainable meaningful jobs for women who have experienced social and economic disadvantage.

Read more about how SVA supports these and other venture partners.

Expanding Australia's social finance market
Ian-Learmonth SVA is delighted to be part of UnitingCare Burnside's (UCB) winning consortium under the NSW Government's Social Benefit Bond pilot program. SVA will work alongside UCB to structure and fund the bond, which will be developed over the coming six months in consultation with the Government working committee. The UCB service delivery model is based around their highly regarded Newpin (New Parent and Infant Network) program, which has a track record both here and in the UK. Newpin is a preventative, therapeutic program that works intensively with families facing potential or actual child protection issues. SVA has begun talks with potential investors and are happy to meet with interested parties who may be looking for social finance investments of this type. For further information contact Ian Learmonth (pictured to the right), SVA's Executive Director, Social Finance.

Making a difference in the world
Fiona Higgins Since 2008 SVA Consulting has had the privilege of working with the Salteri family on a number of assignments in support of their family foundation. As the Salteri family discovered, making the initial decision to give is the easiest decision associated with establishing a family foundation. Deciding where to focus, who to give to, and how to evaluate giving are decisions that are much more challenging and complex. Read how SVA Consulting has supported the CAGES Foundation in making these decisions.

A rare privilege
Annalisa Turner Toronto High School has been identified by SVA as a 'bright spot' in education in Australia, where Principal Mark McConville and his team are creating an environment where students from low SES backgrounds are flourishing. Read how SVA facilitated a life changing experience for one of the school's students - and in the process reinforced to SVA team member Annalisa Turner (pictured to the right), how experiences outside the school gate can be just as important as the experiences within them.

Helping dreams become reality
Allen Roberts with Ganbina’s CEO Adrian Appo For proof of the impact of the programs of SVA venture partner Ganbina, look no further than their former program participant Allen Roberts (pictured to the right with Ganbina's CEO Ganbina’s CEO Adrian Appo). Allen has successfully secured and completed prestigious internships and credits the support provided by Ganbina when he was a teenager in Shepparton, with encouraging him to dream big. Ganbina helps motivate and support young Indigenous kids to stay in school, offering a suite of intensive programs which focus upon the areas of work readiness and employment.
Read Allen's story.

Taking the unbeaten path
Siddharth Ghosh When SVA Consulting Analyst Sid Ghosh (pictured to the right) worked with Newcastle based Indigenous non-profit organisation Yarnteen to help them understand the impact of one of their programs, he found hope and inspiration being created in the local Indigenous communities in the NSW Hunter Valley. Sid writes of how the program is helping to rebuild an empowered community that creates its own opportunities to live with pride. Read more.

The last ever AIME National Hoodie Day is 31 August. SVA venture partner AIME is looking for partners to participate in the event and raise the much needed funds required to improve the chances of Indigenous kids finishing school.

Asia Network Summit and Asia-Pacific Financial Inclusion Forum 2012

25-28 June 2012 | Shanghai, Peoples Republic of China

The Banking With The Poor Network in collaboration with China Association of Microfinance, SEEP Network and Citi Foundation, cordially invites Asian Microfinance Network representatives to attend the Asia Network Summit on 28 June 2012 with the Asia-Pacific Financial Inclusion Forum on 25-27 June 2012, as a pre-event at Shanghai National Accounting Institute (SNAI), Republic of China.

The Asia-Pacific Financial Inclusion Forum is jointly organized by ADBInstitute, AFDC and APEC Business Advisory Council and is expected to be attended by 60-80 APEC Policy regulators. This forum aims to provide a platform to promote financial literacy, proportionate regulations on financial inclusion, establishment of credit bureaus, consumer protection and facilitating cross-border microfinance.

THE 2011 ASIA-PACIFIC FINANCIAL INCLUSION FORUM REPORT
EXPANDING FINANCIAL ACCESS THROUGH
REGIONAL PUBLIC-PRIVATE COOPERATION

Addressing the needs of many people living in poverty in the Asia-Pacific region  through improved access to finance remains a major challenge. Constraints on  public resources have grown in the wake of the Global Financial Crisis. Thus, mobilizing private resources to serve financial needs of low-income households and small enterprises has become ever more important. Stronger, more balanced and more inclusive growth requires efforts to further expand financial access through new channels. It also requires addressing key obstacles that small enterprises face in accessing traditional sources of finance.

This Forum was held with three purposes in mind. First, it aimed to provide a venue for policy dialogue on expanding new channels to serve the financial needs of the unbanked. The focus was on how APEC can harness regional public-private cooperation to promote  the sustainability and expansion of undertakings using these new channels. Second, it aimed to provide a platform for capacity building to help relevant policy makers and regulators in the region address two key issues for expanding  credit to micro-, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs): credit information and legal frameworks for secured lending. Third, it aimed to provide a forum for discussion of broader institutional and economic framework conditions and policies affecting MSMEs.
