Mission, Inc.: The practitioner’s guide to social enterprise

Elisa BirnbaumIf you’re thinking of starting a social enterprise or need advice with your established venture, Mission Inc. may be the how-to guide you’ve been waiting for. Written by two veteran practitioners of social entrepreneurship, Kevin Lynch and Julius Walls Jr., the book is an easy and quick read, offering pragmatic and valuable takeaways for any entrepreneur delving into this burgeoning, exciting, yet oft-times challenging field.

Mission Inc.

From the very first page, one is swept up by the sheer exhilaration these businessmen feel toward social entrepreneurship and its potential to effect change. It’s hard not to feel inspired by the many stories of success. But, lest you fall victim to an idealistic, fantastical image of your enterprise floating effortlessly toward the end goal, Walls and Lynch bring you back to earth pretty quickly. Sharing advice, lessons learned, and words of infinite wisdom culled from their own experiences as well as those of 20 other social entrepreneurs, the reality of running a social enterprise is terrifyingly clear.

Each chapter is broken down according to ten key paradoxes of social enterprise, what they deem the most significant challenges in running a venture of this kind. Some examples include: Doing Good Versus Doing Well, Debits Versus Credits, Do-Gooders Versus Good Doers, and the list goes on. Whether you’re choosing your organizational structure, searching for ways to market your business, scale up, find and secure talent, each paradox is explored simply and comprehensively.

One of the many issues they tackle effectively and diplomatically is the definition of “social enterprise”. After providing a sampling of the more than 15,700,000 Google references, the authors proceed to deconstruct each in detail. They then provide their own personalized definition, offering a step-by-step analysis of why it works for their purposes – and why it should work for the rest of us.

It is probably the most intensive, deductive and impressive approach to defining the obscure term you’ll find. Their definition of social enterprise: a business whose purpose is to change the world for the common good. And, yes, you’ve guessed it; their definition encompasses nonprofits, for-profits and everything in between. Food for thought.

Perhaps the most refreshing element of this book is the sheer candor the authors employ writing about their personal and professional challenges. They share it all: the ups and downs, good and bad decisions, milestones and setbacks, and the victories - those jump-up-and-down-and-shout-to-the-sky triumphs that have reinforced their deep, resonant passion for social entrepreneurship and its ability to better the world.

Integrate social values into purchasing

Every business, nonprofit, and level of government purchases goods and services every day. This includes cleaning, catering, couriers, office supplies, IT, coffee, printing, maintenance and repairs, furniture, fuel, landscaping, and on and on. And within each of these purchases there are many choices from a broad variety of potential suppliers. Which criteria lead to the selection of the suppliers varies. Traditionally, purchasing decisions are based on lowest price for equivalent product or service. And recently, a stronger emphasis on avoiding negative environmental impacts has been added to many purchasing decisions.

What is not always considered in the choosing of a supplier, beyond the price point and negative impact screening, is what could be the ripple and multiplying result of that decision? Purchasing is not an isolated, cost-only decision. Intentionally or not, purchasing choices directly impact employment growth or decline, local and global economies, the environment, and every supplier and their community. The choice ripples along the supply chain, and not selecting a supplier has an impact on their business, and their suppliers. Do we need to look any further than the current USA "Buy Local" decision and its impact and reaction from Canadian and Mexican manufacturers and national governments to understand the connection?

When a purchaser makes purposeful purchasing decisions that blend economic, social and environmental impacts, they can directly and in a measurable and positive way influence the health and sustainability of communities.

However, moving to the use of purposeful purchasing in a business or organization requires the intentional creation of a supportive internal environment and the implementation of a strategy to achieve a blended value return on purchasing. As evidenced by movements such as Fair Trade and organic products, as more purchasers move to sustainable criteria, suppliers will move to meet their demands and requirements in order to get their business. Sustainable demand and supply relationships can create a powerfully beneficial supply chain.

Five steps for purchasing from social enterprises:

  1. Build a purchasing framework the uses a “blended” purchasing criteria: price, quality, and social impact.
  2. Work with your current suppliers to increase their engagement and partnerships with social enterprises.
  3. Unbundle large contracts to make them accessible to social enterprises.
  4. Create incentives, rewards, and measurements for social purchasing accomplishments.
  5. Remember, it’s a cultural and behavioural shift that may take incremental steps toward a long term change.

Partnership Announcement: Center for Nonprofit and Public Leadership at UC Berkeley Haas School of Business

Jeff Camp at TownhallUC Berkeley undergrads are learning to be philanthropists in the new Economics of Philanthropy course taught by Dr. Nora Silver, Full Circle Fund CEO Amy Lesnick, and Darian Rodriguez Heyman, former Executive Director of Craigslist Foundation and Full Circle Fund Fellow. The course is, in essence, a collegiate giving circle and marks the beginning of an exciting partnership between Full Circle Fund and the Center for Nonprofit and Public Leadership at the UC Berkeley Haas School of Business. The Center is led by Professor Silver and is ranked #3 by US News and World Report's Best Business Schools (2009) with a nonprofit specialty. "The bright minds emerging from Cal will be our world's future leaders, policy makers, and philanthropists," explains Dr. Silver, "so it is critical that students examine and understand philanthropic giving from an economic, business, and now, experiential perspective."

Water Innovation Prize Unveils Entrepreneur Finalists

Imagine H20 Logo The struggle for clean water is a global concern, and is increasingly being seen as a human rights issue. Water scarcity effects health, economics, politics, and the environment. Yet, the pervasive lack of awareness of water problems and the dearth of opportunity for top entrepreneurs and investors means few innovators and funders have been focusing on water. Until now. From more than fifty entries from all over the world, ten finalists were recently chosen by a panel of judges for the inaugural Imagine H2O (IH2O) Prize. This is a major milestone for both IH2O and Full Circle Fund's Environment Circle's Project Team, led by Member Meera Balakumar. The competition offers prizes of $70,000 in cash, business and legal support, and access to a network of partners, customers and financiers to help bring their ideas to market. Says CEO Tamin Pechet, "2009 was an incredible year for Imagine H2O, and we can tie many of our successes to our Full Circle Fund relationship...

Micro-Branch Breaks Ground and Vicious Cycle of Payday Lending

Micro-BranchOn January 11, 2010, residents of East San Jose walked through the doors of the new Self-Help micro-branch and opened bank accounts. For some customers, this might be their very first account. This milestone was two years in the making for the North Carolina based Self-Help Credit Union, which in September became one of the Global Economic Opportunity Circle's first three grant projects. Says Project Co-Lead Anna Binder, "We are so excited to see the Self-Help team open the micro-branch doors! This huge milestone puts the Full Circle team in a position to launch the major phase of our project: helping clients make progressive changes to their financial behaviors." Bank accounts are opened every day, so what sets this micro-branch, named Micro Sucursal, apart?

A Vision for California's Future: EACH Education Policy Platform Goes Public

Each VideoFor too long, California's public, PreK-12 education system has fixated on advancing student work on averages and understanding achievement by groups. Full Circle Fund's Education Circle has worked in this arena for nearly a decade and their collective experience has brought to light one singular point: it's just no longer enough to process students in batches and aim for improvement across averages. In the human work of education, success is individual: for each student, each school, each teacher, and each community. That framework is the basis of a newly released policy platform, EACH, a non-partisan education policy approach for California, building on the best research, analysis, and community input of the past decade.

Member of the Year: Annette Brinton

Annette BrintonAt our last Joint Impact Circle Meeting of 2009, we were honored to welcome over 180 of our members and guests to hear from Ira C. Magaziner, Chairman of the Clinton Climate Initiative and the Clinton Foundation HIV/AIDS Initiative. But it was also the night we announce our top honor of the year: the Full Circle Fund Member of the Year Full Impact Award. Global Economic Opportunity Co-Chair Sarah Wigglesworth took the stage to present this year's award to Annette Brinton. Annette was the Grant Cycle Director during the Global Economic Opportunity Circle's inaugural grant cycle in 2009. Annette is a wonderful example of a private sector member who engaged deeply with both her fellow members and the issue areas the circle was exploring. Her efforts, along with the other leaders of the GEO Circle, resulted in three amazing grant projects being chosen by the Circle.

Community Technology Network

CTN class A displaced Hurricane Katrina victim learned how to open an email account and requested an extension on his application to the Road Home program. A senior couple (pictured at right) were taught to use Google Earth and saw the street they once lived on in the Philippines. They now use email, and read about their hometown on Wikipedia. Each day, Community Technology Network (CTN) volunteers help connect low-income San Francisco residents to life-changing technology. CTN, a Full Circle Fund Technology Circle grantee, began in 2001 as a volunteer-led project under the auspices of CompuMentor (now TechSoup Global). At that time, money was being funneled into community centers that didn't have the staff or skills to leverage it, and there was no vehicle for the underserved to easily review in one place the technology courses were being offered at the various community centers.
