The course is, in essence, a collegiate giving circle and marks the beginning of an exciting partnership between Full Circle Fund and the Center for Nonprofit and Public Leadership at the UC Berkeley Haas School of Business. The Center is led by Professor Silver and is ranked #3 by US News and World Report's Best Business Schools (2009) with a nonprofit specialty. "The bright minds emerging from Cal will be our world's future leaders, policy makers, and philanthropists," explains Dr. Silver, "so it is critical that students examine and understand philanthropic giving from an economic, business, and now, experiential perspective." Water scarcity effects health, economics, politics, and the environment. Yet, the pervasive lack of awareness of water problems and the dearth of opportunity for top entrepreneurs and investors means few innovators and funders have been focusing on water. Until now. From more than fifty entries from all over the world, ten finalists were recently chosen by a panel of judges for the inaugural Imagine H2O (IH2O) Prize. This is a major milestone for both IH2O and Full Circle Fund's Environment Circle's Project Team, led by Member Meera Balakumar. The competition offers prizes of $70,000 in cash, business and legal support, and access to a network of partners, customers and financiers to help bring their ideas to market. Says CEO Tamin Pechet, "2009 was an incredible year for Imagine H2O, and we can tie many of our successes to our Full Circle Fund relationship... Continue reading... Micro-Branch Breaks Ground and Vicious Cycle of Payday Lending On January 11, 2010, residents of East San Jose walked through the doors of the new Self-Help micro-branch and opened bank accounts. For some customers, this might be their very first account. This milestone was two years in the making for the North Carolina based Self-Help Credit Union, which in September became one of the Global Economic Opportunity Circle's first three grant projects. Says Project Co-Lead Anna Binder, "We are so excited to see the Self-Help team open the micro-branch doors! This huge milestone puts the Full Circle team in a position to launch the major phase of our project: helping clients make progressive changes to their financial behaviors." Bank accounts are opened every day, so what sets this micro-branch, named Micro Sucursal, apart? Continue reading... A Vision for California's Future: EACH Education Policy Platform Goes Public For too long, California's public, PreK-12 education system has fixated on advancing student work on averages and understanding achievement by groups. Full Circle Fund's Education Circle has worked in this arena for nearly a decade and their collective experience has brought to light one singular point: it's just no longer enough to process students in batches and aim for improvement across averages. In the human work of education, success is individual: for each student, each school, each teacher, and each community. That framework is the basis of a newly released policy platform, EACH, a non-partisan education policy approach for California, building on the best research, analysis, and community input of the past decade. Magaziner, Chairman of the Clinton Climate Initiative and the Clinton Foundation HIV/AIDS Initiative. But it was also the night we announce our top honor of the year: the Full Circle Fund Member of the Year Full Impact Award. Global Economic Opportunity Co-Chair Sarah Wigglesworth took the stage to present this year's award to Annette Brinton. Annette was the Grant Cycle Director during the Global Economic Opportunity Circle's inaugural grant cycle in 2009. Annette is a wonderful example of a private sector member who engaged deeply with both her fellow members and the issue areas the circle was exploring. Her efforts, along with the other leaders of the GEO Circle, resulted in three amazing grant projects being chosen by the Circle. Continue reading... Community Technology Network A displaced Hurricane Katrina victim learned how to open an email account and requested an extension on his application to the Road Home program. A senior couple ( pictured at right) were taught to use Google Earth and saw the street they once lived on in the Philippines. They now use email, and read about their hometown on Wikipedia. Each day, Community Technology Network (CTN) volunteers help connect low-income San Francisco residents to life-changing technology. CTN, a Full Circle Fund Technology Circle grantee, began in 2001 as a volunteer-led project under the auspices of CompuMentor (now TechSoup Global). At that time, money was being funneled into community centers that didn't have the staff or skills to leverage it, and there was no vehicle for the underserved to easily review in one place the technology courses were being offered at the various community centers. More about the project... | | |
