January/February 2012 eNewsletter
Quick Links:

Social Ventures Australia (SVA) invests in social change by helping increase the impact and build the sustainability of those in the social sector. Our investments are focused on high potential organisations that are fostering solutions to some of the most pressing challenges facing our community.
Social finance in action
North Yarra Community Health (NYCH) North Yarra Community Health (NYCH) has been providing free or low cost community health and welfare services to disadvantaged sections of its local community for 142 years. NYCH has identified an opportunity to establish a private GP practice to generate profits to fund NYCH´s community healthcare and welfare work and is working with SVA’s Social Finance team to source start-up funding to set up the practice and cover its costs until it begins to generate profits.

Learn more about how SVA is putting social finance into action, with a finance structure that meets local community needs as well as provides investors with both a social purpose outcome and a financial return.

Something to sing about
Caroline Aebersold SVA is delighted to announce the entry of The Song Room into our venture portfolio. Headed by Caroline Aebersold (pictured), The Song Room is a non-profit organisation focused on ensuring all Australian children, regardless of their background, have the opportunity to participate in music and the arts to enhance their education, personal development and community involvement.

Already working with over 20,000 children every week, find out how SVA will be supporting The Song Room to provide free, tailored, long-term music and arts based programs to even more disadvantaged and high need communities.

Working it Out
GenerationOne SVA Consulting and the SVA Employment team recently completed a series of case studies on behalf of non-profit organisation GenerationOne, to begin to build a more detailed and practical knowledge base of what it takes to successfully transition long-term unemployed Indigenous Australians into sustainable, meaningful employment.

The case studies feature employers who are achieving demonstrable, positive outcomes and were prepared to be open and candid about their experience. Each offered inspiring stories and unique insights, but shared similar foundations that underpinned their success. Read the full story.

Nurturing growth of social enterprise in Queensland
SEED SVA is delighted to be continuing to partner with the Queensland Government in the support of social enterprises that are creating employment opportunities for people who are excluded from the labour market. Through Queensland Social Enterprise Partnership (QSEP), funded by the Queensland Government´s Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation (DEEDI) and Department of Communities, SVA is able to continue our work with 15 inspiring social enterprises, as well as expand our support to another 10 organisations.

Read more about the program and just one of its many success stories, Sandgate Enterprise for Economic Development (SEED).

Taking the guess work out of grantmaking
Fiona Higgins In her role managing SVA´s Grantmaking and Evaluation Service for private ancillary fund (PAF) trustees, Fiona Higgins (pictured) meets many philanthropists who find it challenging to decide where best to direct their funds. Fiona understands these challenges and works with PAF holders to navigate the complexities of the non-profit and philanthropic sectors as they decide which organisations should benefit from their giving.

Fiona has identified 10 key indicators, the presence of which within an organisation tends to predispose it to success in achieving its objectives. And while these indicators provide a good evaluation framework, Fiona also cautions against blindly following a formula without due consideration of the individual circumstances.

Let´s talk about love...
Lighthouse Foundation Lighthouse Foundation provides homeless young people who come from backgrounds of long term neglect and abuse with a home, a sense of family and around the clock therapeutic care. Through their Lighthouse experience, the young people heal, learn again to relate to others and rebuild their lives.

SVA Consulting was recently engaged by Lighthouse Foundation to undertake a Social Return on Investment (SROI) assignment for their program. In this Heart of the Matter piece, SVA SROI Analyst Kateryna Andreyeva explains that meeting one of the program participants and hearing her harrowing story was an intense and moving experience.

SVA´s Executive Director Employment Kevin Robbie has relocated to Melbourne and has expanded his responsibilities to also include the management of SVA´s operations in Victoria.

» Find out more about Kevin

The inaugural SVA Education Dialogue showcased success stories from some of our most disadvantaged schools, highlighting how student achievement is being turned around in various 'Bright Spot' schools. A key output of the day was a document summarising the discussion, which will inform conversations regarding the SVA Education team´s priorities and future work.

» Read the full document here

As one of the Founding Members of GoodStart, the non-profit syndicate which in December 2009 successfully acquired 650 plus ABC Learning Centres, SVA is delighted with the decision to rebrand the organisation to Goodstart Early Learning.

» Read how this name better reflects the organisation´s commitment to the first five years and its move beyond childcare into early learning.

Duncan Peppercorn, Executive Director of SVA Consulting, and Kevin Robbie, Executive Director of Employment, will share their insights on how to measure and evaluate the success of Indigenous programs at the Indigenous Sustainability: Enterprise, Education & Environment Conference, to be held in Sydney in February.

» Hosted by 3 Pillars Network in partnership with the Australian Employment Covenant, Philanthropy Australia and Net Balance Foundation, the conference program is now available for download.

SVA recently hosted a dozen student leaders from Toronto High School, a school SVA´s Education Team has identified as a ´Bright Spot´ and whose Principal, Mark McConville, participated in SVA´s Education Dialogue.

» Read about the students’ experience of the 'big smoke'.

Social Enterprise Network

Dear UnLtd Memberl

Today, we've launched the new, improved Guardian Social Enterprise Network. Be one of the first to take a look.

We've taken the best of the old UnLtdWorld platform – acquired from UnLtd in March 2011, (read the full article on the acquisition) and merged it with the Guardian's own social enterprise network and we hope it will be the best online community for social enterprise and social entrepreneurs in the UK and beyond.

The new site has lots of new functions and features including:

  • a personal profile feature – where you can tell the world who you are and what you do
  • a tailored dashboard  –  view content and social enterprises relevant to your interests
  • a free company profile – get listed in the new online social enterprise directory, sponsored by O2, connect with both users and customers and find partners

Logging in

We have transferred your UnLtdWorld profile to the new site, so you don't need to do anything to become a member and can use the new and improved site straight away.

Log in here  by using the email address you used to sign up for UnLtdWorld and your UnLtdWorld password.

If you can't remember your password, you can simply reset on the log in page.

Once you've logged in, you can edit your profile, change your password, leave comments on articles, and take part in live Q&As.

What's more, if you run a business, you can also register for a free company profile  which will be displayed in what we believe will be the biggest online social enterprise business directory. This profile will increase your visibility to customers, commissioners and potential collaborators - find out more.

We hope you enjoy using the new site. We want this new website to be as useful and easy to use as possible, so if you've got any comments or questions, or you'd just like to tell us about a new development in the world of social enterprise, please write to me at david.mills@guardian.co.uk – or tweet us at @guardiansocent.

Best wishes

David Mills
Editor, Guardian Social Enterprise Network

P.S - To make it easier to comment on articles and take part in live Q&As,  you'll only need to log in using this ID and password, not the generic guardian.co.uk ID and password.
