Social Enterprise Mark to continue support for South West social enterprises

Following the announcement of the forthcoming closure of rise, the rise membership has now overwhelmingly voted for assets to be transferred to its subsidiary, the Social Enterprise Mark Company

Following the rise Extraordinary General Meeting where the rise membership voted to dissolve rise, the Board sought legal advice and held a postal vote to determine the future of rise assets.  It asked members to vote on 3 resolutions (1 from the rise Board and 2 from other members).  The vote attracted a record turnout with 84 of the 97 members voting (representing more than 86% of the membership).   An overwhelming majority of 88% of those voting (or 76% of the membership) supported the rise Directors’ proposal to transfer remaining assets to the Social Enterprise Mark Company and to set up a Legacy Trust. To ensure transparency and accountability, South West Social Enterprise Mark holders will be the main shareholder of the Mark Company through the rise Legacy Trust. This will ensure that dividends paid out in respect of this shareholding will be used for the benefit of social enterprises in South West England. In line with this development, work is also underway to revamp the governance of the Mark Company including the make up of the Board of Directors.

Andrew North, Chair of the Board of Directors, stated:

“The rise Board of Directors would like to thank members for all the messages of support and also to thank them for their cooperation and encouragement at this difficult time, and most of all, for voting in such numbers.  This vote has resoundingly demonstrated democratically the legitimacy of the Social Enterprise Mark as the important legacy for rise.  The good news is that the Legacy Trust will also ensure that there is recognition of the fact that the South West region was key in the foundation of the Mark.  The rise Board and I know that the Mark will continue the good work and reputation of rise into the future.   This has already been demonstrated by the hugely successful launch of the 50in250 campaign, recently launched with the support of the City of London Corporation.

We are also pleased to advise that social enterprises in Torbay and Plymouth will continue to receive FREE business support and that rise’s contract for marketing this business support will be delivered by Peninsula Enterprise, e: info@peninsula-enterprise.co.uk.”
