Funding Structure Reports
MIX is producing 2 reports on how MFIs are funded. The first is an analysis of who is funding small and start-up MFIs. The second paper is a survey of non-deposit MFI funding. Look for these in February, 2010.

Funding Structure Data
We are currently working on integrating funding structure  data into MIX Market. This will provide you insight into how MFIs are funded, sources of that debt, amount of loan, interest rate, and more. Look for this new data in MIX Market at the end of June, 2010.

Greetings!

We have received such a great response to our quarterly newsletter that we will begin sending it out to you every other month.  Look for the next issue in March, 2010! The e-newsletter is also available online in Spanish and French.

Social Performance

View Social Performance Reports and Ratings from MFIs! MIX now has reports on Social Performance from more than 200 MFIs in all regions of the developing world. View these reports on MIX Market by searching for SPS Reports, or click here for more information: http://www.mixmarket.org/social-performance-data.

Check out the Social Performance Indicators blog!   MIX and the SPTF have launched a blog to share ideas about social performance in microfinance, especially as it relates to measurement and evaluation. Timely discussions are an essential part of this blog, such as the recent entry titled Worse Than a War Zone: Sogesol Assesses the Damage in Haiti.

You can also find some preliminary analysis of the social performance data MIX has collected, including an overview of environmental policies.

The Social Performance Indicator blog is available in English, French and Spanish. Visit http://spblog.org.
New Research and Reports
MicroBanking Bulletin 19 MIX released the latest issue of the MBB, featuring benchmarks from 1084 MFIs. This is the first set of data to reflect the impact of the global economic slowdown on microfinance performance. Articles cover current issues including  the links between social performance and financial performance; new standards for evaluation; expanding savings mobilization; and the importance of pricing transparency.  Click here to access the MBB 19.

You can also download the MFI benchmarks that appear in the MBB 19 into an Excel file. Click here: 2008 MFI Benchmarks.

New Reports for the Latin America Region!  Our Latin America office and their partners have produced several new country reports on microfinance performance for 2008.  All reports are currently available in Spanish, and include Bolivia, Colombia, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, and Peru. To view all reports on the Latin America and Caribbean region, click here: LAC Reports.  Or visit MIX Market, and search for MFIs by regions.  Selecting LAC will provide you with an aggregate view of MFI performance, and access to all the recent reports for Latin America.

Currently 14 MFIs operate in Kosovo, covering 18 percent of the financial sector for the country.  This report, produced with MIX partner AMIK (Association of Microfinance Institutions of Kosovo) covers MFI financial performance and developments in the regulatory environment, and includes benchmarks on 7 MFIs.

Coming in February!
  • MIX Global 100 Composite Ranking MIX's annual ranking of MFIs, using a composite approach to measure how well financially sound MFIs expand access to low cost services for microfinance clients. These factors include outreach, efficiency, transparency and profitability.
  • Africa Regional Report Findings show that this region has more than twice the number of depositors as borrowers, and the number of depositors is growing much more quickly. At the same time, loan portfolio is greater than total deposits.
  • Eastern Europe and Central Asia Regional Report: The effects of the global economic slowdown are already reflected in slower growth rate for MFIs in this region. Balanced trend data for 122 MFIs show growth in outreach increased in 2007 by 34%, but by 2008 growth had slowed to 18%.
  • Check our websites for the new reports, due out in February.
