Investor Spotlight: Omidyar Network

Each month, an impact investor discusses with the GIIN their motivations, their impact investment strategy, and challenges they face in this growing industry. This month, we spoke to Amy Klement, Vice President at Omidyar Network, a philanthropic investment firm providing grants, loans, and equity capital to entrepreneurs who foster positive economic, social, and political change. GIIN Investors’ Council Welcomes Two New Members

ACCION's mission is to give people the financial tools they need - microloans, business training and other financial services - to work their way out of poverty. Since launching in 1991, ACCION has helped build 62 microfinance institutions reaching 4.9 million clients in 31 countries throughout the US, Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia. Through its Frontier Investments Group, ACCION also invests in breakthrough innovations that will radically improve the efficiency, reach, and scope of financial services at the base of the economic pyramid.

With leadership from its Global Sustainable Finance (GSF) group, Morgan Stanley works closely with investors and companies to support the development of long-term business models capable of achieving compelling financial, social and environmental returns.  GSF partners with the Firm’s other business units to invest in and/or intermediate investments in three areas in particular: Community Development in the US, Environment, and Social Finance.

The GIIN Celebrates its First Anniversary

One year ago this month, the Global Impact Investing Network was launched at the annual meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative. We were honored to celebrate our first year at a reception with J.P. Morgan Global Head of Research and GIIN board member Nick O’Donohoe, Rockefeller Foundation President Dr. Judith Rodin, and Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) President & CEO Elizabeth Littlefield.

* The picture above isn’t photoshopped – that’s a real GIIN cake, though the photograph has been color corrected by our fabulous design team at J Sherman Studio.

While highlighting benefits behind large scale land purchases, the report also calls for more transparency and monitoring of the social impact of such purchases.
