Dear Friends,

I just returned from an incredible Social Venture Institute at Hollyhock Retreat Centre in British Columbia. Over 140 business leaders and social entrepreneurs gathered on beautiful Cortes Island to learn, collaborate, and recharge. Many thanks to Joel and Dana Solomon for hosting the event, and to Tami Simon, Terry McBride and Bruce Poon Tip for sharing their stories as True Confession speakers. If you're interested in joining us at next year's SVI at Hollyhock, please mark your calendars: September 14 - 18, 2011.

SVN's Fall Invitational is in just one month, and we look forward to seeing you there, along with visionary leaders such as Van Jones, Jonathan Rose, Nell Merlino, Jim Hightower, Phaedra Ellis Lamkins, Otto Scharmer, Katrina vanden Heuvel and many other amazing speakers. We are expecting this event to sell out, given the high response we've received so far, so please register soon if you haven't already. The conference will be held at Ocean Place Resort, October 21 -24 in Long Branch, New Jersey. To find out more and register, go to: www.svn.org/fall2010.

I would like to thank Raphael Bemporad, Mirran Raphaely and Josh Mailman for hosting a terrific NY Local Gathering in BBMG's new Brooklyn office last week. We hope to see many of you at our upcoming gatherings in San Francisco and Napa this month!

In service,

Deb Nelson

SVNstaffSVN Staff Retreat at Mayacamas Ranch

The SVN staff recently spent two days regrouping, re-grounding and re-energizing at SVN member David Levy's Mayacamas Ranch, a Generocity resort. Located in beautiful Calistoga, California, the ranch was a the perfect setting for our staff retreat. The retreat was facilitated by SVN members Crystal and Christian Forthomme of RealChange and focused on identifying different communication and leadership methods.

Lotus Foods Presenting at Clinton Global Initiative

SVN member Ken Lee, co-founder of Lotus Foods with Caryl Levine, was in New York last week to present at the Clinton Global Initiative on their work to expand the use of systems of rice intensification (SRI) to alleviate poverty. SRI rice takes a fraction of the resources to grow and boosts yields substantially. Click here to watch President Clinton's introduction and Ken's report.

Give Something Back and Bolder Giving Tell Inc. How to Give

SVN members Mike Hannigan, founder of Give Something Back, and Christopher Ellinger, co-founder of Bolder Giving, were interviewed by Inc. Magazine on how companies can best incorporate philanthropy into their bottom lines and give at their full potential. They encourage entrepreneurs to find a support network by joining an organization like SVN or B Corp where you can learn from other business leaders. "Reach out to people who have done it before and find out what lessons they've learned," Hannigan recommends. Read the full article here.

Mark Albion on How to Lead Like a Monk, Architect and Diplomat

To research his book, True to Yourself: Leading a Values-Based Business, SVN member Mark Albion interviewed 75 SVN members on the challenge of scaling a business or non-profit from a founder-led endeavor to a second generation-led organization. What he found was that leadership abilities were the most consistent limiting factor. In this article in the Standford Social Innovation Review, Albion identifies three key leadership models needed to scale an enterprise: "1. Be a monk, not a father. 2. Be an architect, not a captain. 3. Be a diplomat, not a dictator." Click here to read the full article.

Take Action! ASBC Policy Update - Fair Elections
ASBC
The American Sustainable Business Council is working with Public Campaign to support the Fair Elections Now Act (H.R. 1826) and we need your help. With just a couple weeks left before members of Congress return to their district for the elections, time is running out to pass the Fair Elections Now Act. Getting it passed in the House this session sets up the opportunity for Senate passage in a lame duck session later this fall.

The bill can't pass unless House Speaker Nancy Pelosi moves it to the floor for a vote. Please call Speaker Pelosi's office in Washington DC at (202) 225-4965 or in San Francisco office at (415) 556-4862 urging her to move the Fair Elections Now Act to the floor. Please sign the online petition on this issue.
