Social Enterprise Day 2009

Social enterprise day photography competition 2009

This year, 19 November is Social Enterprise Day: a national day to celebrate and promote social enterprise.  We are delighted to launch of the second annual Social Enterprise Day photography competition for England, and this year, we want to show how social enterprise is more than just business as usual

We are in search for the best photograph that shows how social enterprise is using business to make positive change. Maybe you work for a social enterprise or maybe you or someone you know has received exceptional service or goods from one - take a photo and show us what makes social enterprise great.

Social Enterprise Coalition

Changes to the Coalition's policy and research directorate

The month of August has brought some recent changes within the Coalition's policy and research directorate.

We are pleased to announce that George Leahy - the Coalition's director of policy and research - has extended his secondment from the Department of Health with the Social Enterprise Coalition until the end of December 2009.  George will be in the role of director of research, taking forward the Coalition's research programme and a number of specific projects including the Identifier project.

Secondly, on 17 August the Coalition appointed Ceri Jones as interim head of policy.  Ceri will be leading the Coalition's policy work.

We have recently bid farewell to Daniel Shah (research and policy officer) who has joined the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) and Ewan Kennedy (policy officer) who has joined Race on the Agenda (ROTA).  We wish them well and thank them for their hard work and contributions in developing our policy and research agenda.

Finally, we are in the process of recruiting for two new policy roles - senior policy officer and policy support officer. These will be temporary contracts until the end of the year.

School for Social Entrepreneurs

School for Social Entrepreneurs opens in Devon

Dartington and the School for Social Entrepreneurs (SSE) are delighted to announce the opening of the latest branch of the SSE in Devon.

The SSE provides support to pioneering individuals who are acting entrepreneurially for social benefit and positive change, rather than for personal profit. As part of its growth in the UK, and with recently secured funding from the Office of the Third Sector (OTS) at the Cabinet Office, a Devon SSE is being set up by a coalition of county wide organisations, led by The Dartington Hall Trust.

This coalition of Devon organisations  - The Dartington Hall Trust, Devon County Council, Torbay Council, South Devon College, Business Link and Cosmic  - have matched the grant from the OTS, with a combination of cash and in kind contributions.  Representatives from these organisations met recently at Dartington for the first meeting of the Devon SSE Steering Group.

Alastair Wilson, CEO of SSE UK said:

"We are hugely excited to see social entrepreneurs being supported in Devon to both learn and develop new skills and to create sustainable, effective organisations. Huge thanks and congratulations are due to all the partners and individuals who have been a part of making this happen; and, as a former SSE student myself, I look forward to meeting the social entrepreneurs who will start the first programme in January 2010"

Social Enterprise Investment Fund regional workshops

London - September 2009
Manchester - November 2009
Bristol - January 2010
Newcastle - March 2010

Find out more about the Department of Health's Social Enterprise Investment Fund (SEIF), at one of the regional workshops running from September 2009 - March 2010.

The SEIF provides investment and support to help existing and new social enterprises grow and deliver improvements to health or social care. The SEIF recognises that commissioners, as purchasers of these services, are working to stimulate diverse provider markets in which social enterprises play an integral role.

A series of regional one day workshops will bring commissioners, existing and new social enterprises together, to encourage greater understanding of the respective challenges they face.

The workshops will highlight the opportunities and benefits offered by building stronger relationships between service providers and the public sector. They aim to help to develop understanding of the current and future contribution that social enterprises can add to the delivery of primary and community care.

SEIF is managed on behalf of the Department of Health by Futurebuilders England Ltd, working together with Partnerships UK plc. The workshops have been developed, and will be delivered by Partnerships UK.

If you have any queries, please call the SEIF events team 0208 842 7721 or email seif@futurebuilders-england.org.uk

'How ethical are supermarket clothes?'

Sanjida O'Connell, The Guardian, 13 August

The cheapest T-shirt in Asda costs £1.50. You don't have to be a mathematician to calculate that this figure doesn't add up. Someone, somewhere bought that cotton seed, planted it, irrigated it, pumped it full of pesticides, fertilizers and herbicides, harvested it, sorted it, baled it, shipped it to another country, carded it, spun it, wove it, cut it, sewed it, packaged it, shipped it again, and sold it. For £1.50. If we're not paying the price of that cotton T-shirt, someone, somewhere is. Lee Holdstock, a textile consultant for the Soil Association, says, "There is no such thing as a cheap product. The consumer may not be paying at point of sale but there are hidden environmental and human costs."....
