The day included meetings with youth, media, civil society, ambassadors and business leaders. These was a session with organizations and individuals who had suffered directly from the conflict, as well as a meeting with a range of Israeli NGOs which suggested several key points of agreement on Israeli perceptions of the peace process. A Visit to the Middle East Jeff Skoll previews The Elders trip to the Middle East and outlines his commercial and philanthropic activities in the region, including the Gandhi Project, support for regional social entrepreneurs (PeaceWorks/OneVoice, INJAZ Al-Arab, EcoPeace-Friends of the Earth Middle East and Search for Common Ground), Participant Media films with Middle Eastern themes and content, and the newly created Skoll Urgent Threats Fund, which includes Middle East conflict as a focus area. U.S. Consumers Eating up KIND Bars According to recent data, KIND bars, made by PeaceWorks, the social enterprise created by 2008 Skoll entrepreneur Daniel Lubetzky, is the fastest growing brand of nutritional bars in the U.S. Starbucks, Stew Leonard’s, and Barnes & Noble College Bookstores now carry KIND bars. Five percent of the profits of the sales of KIND bars goes to the PeaceWorks Foundation, whose primary initiative is the OneVoice Movement, aimed at elevating the voices of the moderate majority of Israelis and Palestinians who support peace. National Geographic Interview with Nathan Wolfe National Geographic Traveler Magazine has a good interview with Nathan Wolfe of the Global Viral Forecasting Initiative. GVFI, which the Skoll Foundation supports, was part of the team that earlier this month announced the discovery of the origins of malaria. The Traveler interview focuses not just on the work of GVFI, but Nathan’s take on the various places in which he works from a cultural perspective. VillageReach gains top rating Skoll SASE VillageReach received a top rating from GiveWell for its work improving health care delivery in rural Mozambique, with special mention of the organization’s impact in increasing childhood immunizations. Sundance Highlights Sandy Herz, who manages the Skoll Foundation’s film and broadcast partnerships, attended the Sundance Institute Creative Producing Summit as part of the Foundation’s work to engage more people on the potential impact of social entrepreneurs. Skoll entrepreneurs Martin Burt and Daniel Lubetzky also participated in the two days of intensive engagement with filmmakers and industry advisors at the Sundance Resort. Kirsten Johnson, Megan Gelstein, Gayle Ferraro and Glenn Baker. talented documentary filmmakers whose social entrepreneur film projects are part of the Stories of Change film fund, were also there. These projects feature well-known social entrepreneurs like Van Jones and Muhammad Yunus, as well as rising stars like Sakena Yacoobi and Mohammed Rezwan. Origins of Malaria Revealed Skoll grantee, the Global Viral Forecasting Initiative (GVFI), led by Dr. Nathan Wolfe, in partnership with an international group of scientists, announced their discovery of the origins of the deadliest form of human malaria - Plasmodium falciparim. Published in the August 3 edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, this critical finding disproves the long-held belief that malaria is an ancient disease that has evolved along with its human hosts for over 5 million years. The Skoll Foundation supports GVFI in its work of tracking viral chatter, the spillover of viruses from animals to humans, in global hotspots. |
