Measuring social return on investment

News on The Edge
Welcome to the Social Edge update!

SoCap09 is about to start, and we asked Rod Schwartz to help us answer a provocative question: Do we really need more money?

Ask any social entrepreneur, and the answer will be an emphatic “yes”: we are all keen to get our hands on more capital, convinced this will solve all our problems. But is this serving our long-term interests? Or should we instead take more time to build successful social ventures and protect the long-term future of impact investment?

Join the CEO of ClearlySo in the conversation, then check Opportunity Collaboration’s Jonathan C. Lewis as he questions whether the West is getting its money’s worth for its philanthropic largesse. He quotes Oxford economist Paul Collier to advocate government-based solutions, including preferential trade policies, tougher anti-corruption laws, and even humanitarian military actions!

Our other bloggers are also quite provocative this week: Leila Chirayath Janah looks into mixing microwork with microfinance, Tori Hogan wonders who you trust in aid evaluation, and SVT Group goes from SoCap to large cap.

Also this week the GSBI participants present their business plans and Mathias Craig reflects on his own GSBI experience. Dr. O helps you raise money from the new generation of women power donors, and Parag Gupta wonders how you can build effective partnerships while you are still in launch mode.

Follow Social Edge founder Jeff Skoll as he blogs his extraordinary visit to Israel and the Palestinian Territories with The Elders delegation: Fernando Henrique Cardoso, Ela Bhatt, Gro Brundtland, Jimmy Carter, Mary Robinson and Desmond Tutu, as well as Virgin founder Richard Branson.

One small favor: Take this short survey on social entrepreneurship. It will only take you five minutes, and your input will be anonymous, confidential, and greatly appreciated.
