News on The Edge
Welcome to the Social Edge update!

In honor of Mozilla Service Week, Social Edge is taking a look at the best ways for social entrepreneurs to engage with volunteers, whether they are part of the general public or experts offering specialized pro bono work.

Charles “Hipbone” Cameron points out that Mozilla Service Week has two buttons on its home page: “I want to help” and “I need help.” He writes: “These buttons are like the human condition in miniature. We could each wear one, or both of them.”

Join him in the conversation, and bring your thoughts on how social entrepreneurs can harness the enthusiasm of volunteers to maximize impact.

Then check Kiva Fellow Nancy Tuller’s report from Ghana. As a volunteer, she has been exposed to dramatic situations, like “parents pulling children out of school so they may begin working.”

Or read SVT Group Sara Olsen and Brett Galimidi’s SoCap’09 recap: “One way to maximize impact is to be transparent about it.” Jill Finlayson, who was also a speaker at SoCap’09, agrees: “For-profits must be held to the same standards as non-profits and report their social impact as well as their financial returns. It’s only fair.”

Also read Lloyd Nimetz and Paula Goldman’s notes from the Tides Momentum Conference: “We learn from each other's styles and small actions almost as much as from the larger frameworks and strategies for change itself.”

And congratulations to our friends at D.light Design, who were just nominated by TIME Magazine as one of their 25 Responsibility Pioneers!

What are the true costs and benefits of embracing volunteers? Tell us how social entrepreneurs can harness the enthusiasm and energy of volunteers to maximize impact.

Social Entrepreneur: An Insane Job Description?
Emerging social entrepreneurs try to address internal organizational challenges while directing the expanding mission of their social ventures. Curtis Chang wonders if there are ways to share expertise to be more efficient.

Who will build a more efficient marketplace?
Help Charles “hipbone” Cameron identify who will be stepping up to make the sector more efficient, rather than just trying to solve part of the problem for a few organizations at a time.

Do we really need more money?
By focusing excessively on the investment side, are we not missing an opportunity to invest more into building great social ventures? Join Rod Schwartz, CEO of ClearlySo, in the conversation.
