Paying Fair Trade pricing base on quality and disseminating Integrated Organic System for improved crop yields. 2. Complying strictly to a zero tolerance for chemical and commercially produced organic inputs. All our fertilizers and pesticides are produced on-site using indigenous organic ingredients. 3. Working to reclaim the Plateau’s biodiversity that has been diminishing from deforestation and unsustainable “Slash and Burn” and “Shifting” cultivation practices. Bolaven Farms in Laos > Some of our most exciting news is about BBC World's visit to Bolaven Farms. BBC has completed the filming of their next Earth Report which focuses on the biodiversity of Laos. Bolaven Farms is featured in the film as an effort to heal and redeem depleted land that has suffered from unsustainable “Slash and Burn” cultivation practices. > We started to roast coffee and test the retail market for premium coffee at Mrs. Boua's café at the Yung Waterfalls. The sales are promising even at the same price level as our website. The tourists have embraced the social and ecological merits of the Bolaven Farms model and are supporting it through their purchases. Mrs. Boua is receiving training to brew filter coffee according to the SCAE Goldcup Standard. See www.scae.com/goldcup. > Bolaven Farms was invited to use two parcels of land totaling 77 hectares (190 acres) on a complimentary basis. Once again, these are friends who have chosen to support our work locally. The land has been cleared and prepared for planting fodder, and before long we will move our cattle and goats to the sites where they can graze. > Our General Manager, Mr. Somsay, has retired from the management of our local operations. We are actively seeking the right man to fill this vital role. > With the departure of our GM, some fine-tuning of our management structure is progressing. Most of the existing team remains, we do see the need to strengthen and regroup the team to move forward. > January 2010 was a sad month for the farm. Some sixty farmers and their children left the farm to work for a nearby farm. This brought our spirit down as low as a pregnant ant. By the end of February we were comforted when the farmers who had departed, either came by or sent word that they left for the wrong reason. They said Bolaven Farms was a better place for them. We are thankful and comforted to know our love for our farmers are not in vain, they all are better farmers now than before joining Bolaven Farms. The farm is functioning as normal, with new farmers arriving and going through the training system. > 21 cows were successfully artificially inseminated; our anticipation is almost like that of a first-time expecting father. Calving will start in May. > Bolaven Farms Café will open on the main street of Pakse in Aug 2010. Aside from offering one of the best coffee in town, we will also serve nutritional home-made meals using wholesome ingredients grown at our farm.
