“Now that I am a farmer,  I have a redeemed perspective of and new appreciation for the first rain of
the year. The early rain does far more than break a dry, stressful season for our coffee trees;  it serves
as a token promise of the imminent harvests that are yet to come.” Sam Say, Founder, Bolaven Farms

Bolaven Farms models “Beyond Fair Trade Organic”
> Bolaven Farms is boldly claiming “Beyond Fair Trade and Organic” in what we do:
    1. Paying Fair Trade pricing base on quality and disseminating Integrated Organic System for improved crop yields.
    2. Complying strictly to a zero tolerance for chemical and commercially produced organic inputs. All our fertilizers
and pesticides are produced on-site using indigenous organic ingredients.
    3. Working to reclaim the Plateau’s biodiversity that has been diminishing from deforestation and unsustainable
“Slash and Burn” and “Shifting” cultivation practices.

Bolaven Farms in Laos
> Some of our most exciting news is about BBC World's visit to Bolaven Farms. BBC has completed the filming of their
next Earth Report which focuses on the biodiversity of Laos. Bolaven Farms is featured in the film as an effort to heal
and redeem depleted land that has suffered from unsustainable “Slash and Burn” cultivation practices.
> We started to roast coffee and test the retail market for premium coffee at Mrs. Boua's café at the Yung Waterfalls.
The sales are promising even at the same price level as our website. The tourists  have embraced the social and
ecological merits of the Bolaven Farms model and are supporting it through their purchases. Mrs. Boua is receiving
training to brew filter coffee according to the SCAE Goldcup Standard. See www.scae.com/goldcup.
> Bolaven Farms was invited to use two parcels of land totaling 77 hectares (190 acres) on a complimentary basis.
Once again, these are friends who have chosen to support our work locally. The land has been cleared and prepared
for planting fodder, and before long we will move our cattle and goats to the sites where they can graze.
> Our General Manager, Mr. Somsay, has retired from the management of our local operations. We are actively
seeking the right man to fill this vital role.
> With the departure of our GM, some fine-tuning of our management structure is progressing. Most of the existing
team remains, we do see the need to strengthen and regroup the team to move forward.
> January  2010 was a sad month for the farm. Some sixty farmers and their children left the farm to work for a nearby
farm. This brought our spirit down as low as a pregnant ant. By the end of February we were comforted when the
farmers who had departed, either came by or sent word that they left for the wrong reason. They said Bolaven Farms
was a better place for them. We are thankful and comforted to know our love for our farmers are not in vain, they all
are better farmers now than before joining Bolaven Farms. The farm is functioning as normal, with new farmers arriving
and going through the training system.
> 21 cows were successfully artificially inseminated; our anticipation is almost like that of a first-time expecting father.
    Calving will start in May.
>  Bolaven Farms Café will open on the main street of Pakse in Aug 2010. Aside from offering one of the best coffee
in town, we will also serve nutritional home-made meals using wholesome ingredients grown at our farm.

Bolaven Farms in Hong Kong
> Bolaven Farms was given complimentary use of office space in Hong Kong by a friend in the steel business.  We
express our heart-felt thanks to Donald Au at Steelco.
> Brio Espresso, a new Specialty Coffee Store in Causeway Bay, is offering our coffees to retail consumers. Our coffees
    quickly became the best sellers.
> Bolaven Farms was featured by NOW TV. See
> Bolaven Farms was invited to speak with Grade 10 students at the Chinese International School, as part of the school’s
enrichment Fridays. Connecting our young people to the challenge of poverty and invite them to become part of the
solutions is very much apart of our corporate motivation. Teachers and Headmasters, please invite us to your school.
> Bolaven Farms HK welcome on-board Chapman Lee (Commercial Director), Denis Ng (Operations Director),
Charles Schmitt (Corporate Relations), Pat Chan (Admin) and Bikash (Local Logistics).
