From the Director It has been a busy fall! Jason Benedict and I developed the curriculum for the entrepreneurship training course in Rwanda, and have traveled there six times in the past few months in order to launch the program. It has been exciting to teach the first cohort at the Business Development Center in Kigali, and we look forward to seeing the new businesses our students at the BDC will start in the coming months. One important element of our training is having visiting executives join us at the BDC to work with students and interact with the local business community. A recognized investment authority, Andrew Root, Regent MBA '94, is just one of many individuals who are pouring into the lives of our students. On the home front, Tom Stansbury, Regent MBA '99, is spearheading an exciting kingdom initiative in partnership with Nelson's Catering and The Refuge. Finally, don't miss the captivating picture below of Rwandan boys wearing soccer jerseys donated by Beach Junior Athletics. Happy Thanksgiving from all of us here at RCE! Inside BDC Rwanda Much has happened in the first half of our 16-week entrepreneurship training program at the Business Development Center Rwanda. Our students are progressing rapidly with their business ideas: during the first half of the course, they generated and assessed the feasibility of many creative, ambitious business ideas; weeks eight and nine focused on refining these ideas. Our visiting executives helped tremendously in this task. For more details, read the Mid-Term Report. (For background on the program and information about the launch, see our first report.) <<top of page>> Entrepreneur-in-Residence Spearheads Kingdom Venture Tom Stansbury, RCE Entrepreneur-in-Residence and Regent MBA '99, is working on a kingdom business initiative in a joint venture with Nelson's Catering and a residential men's ministry called The Refuge. Nelson’s specializes in BBQ style recipes. In fact, they have introduced a technology through which one person can cook 5000 meals in a day! The Refuge works with men struggling with alcohol, drug, and homeless issues that create barriers to employment. This joint venture is RCE’s primary domestic initiative, with Tom assisting with capital acquisition, business model development and implementation, and on-the-ground entrepreneurial support. This venture has already proven to be extremely beneficial to Ohio, where it is based. After a tornado left many homeless and hungry last September, Nelson's superb technology made it possible to provide 8000 meals in one week! They were a great help to the community. See Tom on NBC4 News or read his blog post <<top of page>> Regent Alum Impacts Rwanda Andrew Root, Regent MBA ’94, spoke to about 60 senior bankers, CEO’s, government, education, NGO, and business leaders about Global Capital Markets one Wednesday evening in late October, and then gave a workshop on financial analysis to about 90 professionals and educators the following morning. It was a big hit! In addition to helping Rwandans, these events boosted the credibility of our Business Development Center and opened some key doors. We have talked with the President of the School of Finance and Banking (Rwanda’s top business school) and the CEO of Crystal Ventures about cooperating on various projects. Andrew also consulted with, advised, and mentored our BDC students. They greatly enjoyed the experience; several commented on how much they learned from one week with Andrew. <<top of page>> Book Recommendations We’re all exhausted. We struggle with conflicting demands of life—work, family, and faith. We sense an unsettling disconnectedness between those competing spheres. How do we resolve the tension between work and spiritual life? Ken Eldred’s latest book, which addresses these questions, is titled The Integrated Life. "This book will help readers integrate their faith, family, and work in a world that tends to drive wedges between them. An excellent book to help you reflect on what is important." -Dr. John Mulford, RCE Director My Business, My Mission tells the story of a movement that is changing lives in the most impoverished nations on earth. It is also transforming businesspeople by exposing them to a revolutionary paradigm: the idea that God has called them into mission through business. Partners Worldwide is one organization that links businesspeople with entrepreneurs in developing countries, to join together to fight poverty. Their mission: to help expand businesses, create wealth, and provide jobs for the poor in Christ's name. <<top of page>> Happy Thanksgiving! From all of us here at RCE, we wish you a joyful and blessed Thanksgiving. John, Jason, Tom S., Tom N., Hanisha and Skye (In picture: Rwandan boys wearing jerseys donated by Beach Junior Athletics. Jason Benedict gave the jerseys to Kent Smith, YMCA Kigali, for their soccer outreach.) |
