Social enterprise of the week: MicroEnsure

MicroEnsureInsurance isn't a word which inspires the imagination. However, our 'ClearlySo Gem' this week is showing how it can solve major issues in the developing world.

MicroEnsure recently won at the FT Sustainable Banking Awards for its work using mobile banking to provide funeral insurance in Ghana. Founder Richard Leftley has been giving us all the details.

Guardian seminar

SeminarOur second seminar with the Guardian will answer a key issue of the moment: how can social enterprises access public sector assets? With the government turning to social enterprise to right a number of wrongs, public authorities are opening up land and assets to the social sector. It's a time of opportunity, but also challenges. Our half day event will present expert speakers who will point you in the right direction. Find out more here.

Six of the best: social enterprise in Africa

With our blog on MicroEnsure offering a glimpse at how social enterprise is addressing poverty in Africa, here are six other fine businesses driving development in the Third World.

  • Riders for Health: An excellent organisation using motorbikes to get medical equipment to hard to reach areas of the world.
  • Alive and Kicking: Providing sustainable employment for people in Africa stitching footballs.
  • Ubuntu Trading: A Fairtrade drinks provider.
  • Barefoot Power: An innovative company bringing lighting solutions to the remote areas of the developing world.
  • Honeycare Africa: Established in 2000 this works to increase income for rural Kenyan farmers.
  • Bespoke Experience: Ethical and fair tourism provider.
