It's October, a time of harvest celebrations, a time of thanksgiving. Still, it's impossible not to notice that we live in a world of haves and have nots. Social entrepreneurs around the globe are working on new solutions to address the root causes of poverty and income polarization, including many in our hometown of Toronto. Read on for more information about our upcoming event on this topic.

It's 1am on a Friday and I'm on a makeshift dance floor at the home of Joel and Dana Solomon on Cortes Island, British Columbia, 100 miles north of Vancouver. A lovely house that caresses both forest and ocean, it's a perfect spot for a party. The guy to my left is a life/business coach and investor. B Corps

There has been much ado south of the border about recent developments with B Corps (B stands for "Benefit") and the concomitant legislative amendments to state corporate laws, which give birth to a new type of legal corporate form: the Benefit Corporation. This piece will serve to clarify the difference between "B Corp" and "Benefit Corporation," highlight the benefits and responsibilities of becoming a Certified B Corp for social entrepreneurs, and touch on Canadian developments of Benefit Corporation legislative proposals. Read more...
   

Capital One Canada and enp partner to support youth Enterprising Non-Profits (enp) and Capital One Canada announced a new program designed to provide Canadian youth and non-profits servicing youth access to funds to build and sustain social enterprises. The new Capital One Youth Entrepreneurship Fund will be available starting Fall 2011 and will aim to build stronger communities by empowering the nonprofit sector with the resources and coaching they need to build sustainable funding models. The fund will be available in four major Canadian cities (Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver and Montreal).   

MaRS Awarded $1.3 Million By Rockefeller and McConnell Foundations MaRS Discovery District announced that substantial funding support from the Rockefeller Foundation and the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation will be made available for the Centre for Impact Investing, to be housed at MaRS. The Centre will be a national hub that will increase awareness for and effectiveness of social finance to catalyze new capital, talent, and initiatives dedicated to tackling social and environmental problems in Canada.

2011 International Forum on the Social and Solidarity Economy The central theme of this international meeting will be the need for a dialogue between government and civil society in order to develop public policies for the social economy.
