Expos

The city of Petra, one of the many historic and incredible sights to be visited on expos this year
Expos (or exposure trips) are one of the most important and exciting parts of many members' & partners' journey with TBN. Seeing the scandal of poverty first hand and being part of businesses and projects that are making a real, sustainable impact is an enriching and life-changing experience, plus you'll experience new culture and new opportunities.
TBN is running a number of expo trips in the first half of this year. We strongly encourage you to make going on an expo your New Year's resolution. So get in touch and let us know which expo you're interested in.
Amman, Jordan – April 2013
Jordan now hosts the largest number of refugees per capita on earth. TBN Partner Jonathan Tidd is taking a group to Amman, Jordan to work among refugees, meet entrepreneurs & leaders, visit a range of enterprises and build new business opportunities to create long-term jobs alleviating poverty in this key Middle-Eastern country. There's also a chance to visit the historical city of Petra, Mt Nebo, the Dead Sea and other incredible sights.
Jonathan is particularly seeking those with experience in business development, marketing, e-commerce or agriculture but the trip is open to anyone with skills to offer.
Contact us on info@tbnetwork.org if you're interested. There are currently just 3 spaces left on this trip, so get in touch soon.
Bolivia – planned for 2013
John Fleetwood, TBN Partner and Director of The Cochabamba Project, is leading an expo to Bolivia. The trip will visit the Cochabamba Project on the fringes of the Bolivian Amazon. The project works with over 1000 farmers helping them to manage their plots more sustainably, improve their agricultural practices, increase access to market, and is reforesting 1400 hectares with diverse native hardwoods. Their business models creates an economic incentive for farmers to avoid further deforestation and shares profits with farmers, potentially tripling their income (in addition to all the other benefits of training).
The trip is between 10-14 days and will include seeing two national parks first hand, and experiencing Andean culture at La Paz.
Contact us on info@tbnetwork.org if you're interested.
Kenya – January 2013 (update)
TBN Chairman Stuart McGreevy is running an expo later this month to Kenya. We told you about this trip late last year and it is now fully subscribed and going ahead. Watch this space for updates from Stuart on the East Africa projects they are visiting and developing.
If you're particularly interested in Kenya and want to find out how you can use your skills and resources to expand on the work that will be started on this expo let us know and we will update you on the group's return.
Zimbabwe – June 2013
Long-standing TBN Member John C. Richards is running an expo to Zimbabwe to visit identified potential entrepreneurs needing skills & capital. Although this trip is fully subscribed please let us know if you'd be interested in joining in case spaces become available. If you'd be interested in going, or if you want to be kept informed of the opportunities to get involved arising from this trip and the contact with new entrepreneurs, let us know and we'll make sure you get updates from John and his team.

Help Needed

Scaling up new market opportunities with farmers in Bolivia
The Cochabamba Project that you heard about above is looking to develop new business opportunities and scale up.
The project works with over 1000 farmers helping them to manage their plots more sustainably whilst reforesting the area with diverse native hardwoods. The project’s business model increases farmer’s income – sometimes by as much as 3× – and provides an economic incentive to not cause further deforestation.
They are looking for expertise and experience in developing sales channels and/or market access for agricultural products to scale up various opportunities with these farmers to increase the impact of the project.
If you can help please get in touch. More details on our website »
TBN is seeking 2 interns
TBN is seeking interns for 3-6 to help with the development of TBN overseas (particularly in the US, India and S.E.Asia), improve TBN's communications and social media impact, and to help us expand new and existing projects & businesses.
If you or someone you know would be interested to work with TBN — or if you can put us in touch with networks, organisations or groups that could share this opportunity with others — please get in touch on info@tbnetwork.org

Resources

This is an inspiring article about 'intrepreneurs' — individuals and teams working from within companies, going beyond traditional CSR — developing solutions to problems in their cities, communities, and overseas. It talks about some great examples of high-impact projects and also highlights the need for long-term, sustainability in solutions. Short-term pilots and projects rarely have a good return on investment.
DFID paper on HIV
This paper — published by the Department for International Development — summarises the UK government’s goals and strategies on HIV through to 2015, but it also a useful resource for anyone wanting to find out more about the current state of HIV in the developing world.
