To RSVP click here. | Members in Action | | Keeping the Cameras Rolling Bianca and Michael Alexander of Conscious Planet Media were recently awarded two fellowships to continue producing stories about sustainable living and the state of health care in the U.S: CEO Bianca Alexander was named a 2009 Ethnic Media Fellow for the Association of American Health Care Journalists, and both Bianca and her partner Michael were named California Broadcast Journalism Fellows at the University of Southern California/Annenberg School of Communication. As part of these fellowships, they will be producing a documentary entitled "The Color of Health: African Americans and Diabetes" and exploring the correlation between ethnicity, socio-economic status, and degenerative disease in the United States. B Stimulated The Nation has recently published B Corp's Andrew Kassoy's 10 recommendations on how to stimulate the economy. For those of you looking for an e-waste recycling solution for your small or medium size business, Give Something Back is your answer! Previously, e-waste recycling was only convenient and cost-efficient for bigger corporations who made arrangements with collectors, but times have changed. Riding the Biodiesel Wave SVN Members Orly and Steven Salsberg (CEO of Salsberg Group and Vice Chairman of the Council on the Environment of New York City appointed by Mayor Michael Bloomberg) have launched numerous green and CSR business initiatives in the Northeast. Salsberg Group was featured in the media last week for fueling their passenger ships with biodiesel fuel sourced from SVN member company, Tri-State Biodiesel, which collects used restaurant oil and converts it to biodiesel blends. The Salsbergs plan to build the greenest US passenger ship and a biodiesel fuel boat in the near future and will be frequent hosts of local SVN gatherings. To watch the footage on NBC, click here and on Fox, here. Don't Catch the Flu, Track It Recently featured on Forbes.com, Josh Knauer's FluTracker is tracking a lot of attention. A joint effort between Dr. Henry Niman, a biomedical researcher, and Rhiza Labs' software, the FluTracker web site is globally tracking the H1N1 swine flu outbreak. Rhiza and Dr. Niman are now working with AT&T to integrate data on the flu's progress into its human resources management system so the carrier can alert employees about flu outbreaks happening near them. They are also working with a drug store chain to use the 'Tracker' to help them anticipate when they need to stock their stores with flu remedies and flu prevention supplies. Pomp & Circumstance Two weeks ago, over 30 Graduates of the Lincoln Park Coast Cultural District (LPCCD) green job training program received their diplomas on stage at the Lincoln Park Music Festival. The goal of the program is to stimulate green jobs in New Jersey in response to the state's aggressive plan for energy efficiency. A central focus of the program is energy efficiency assessment, fundamental building science, and weatherization. The graduates are prepared for jobs such as Building Analyst, Air Sealer, Home Energy Rater, Field Energy Consultant, and Home Improvement Retrofit Trainee. Hannigan Joins 'The Club' National nonprofit organization Bolder Giving's '50 percent league' highlights those givers who are notorious for giving away at least half their income, profit or personal wealth. Currently, there are 125 individuals or families that have made the 50 percent club list, including Give Something Back's Cofounder and President, Mike Hannigan. The 59-year-old businessman doesn't consider himself a philanthropist, but an activist who lives a comfortable life. He is quoted in the San Francisco Chronicle article saying "I do my community work during business hours, I get paid to do it. I give at the office."
