News on The Edge Social Edge welcomes today a new blogger, Magogodi Makhene, who writes in her opening post: “By the time of my birth, Africa was buried in the lost decade of the 80s and our home country, South Africa, was embroiled in the angst of apartheid's slow, painful death. The Africa that greeted my birth was a shadow of itself, smaller even than the colonized Africa of my grandmother's earliest days.” She is in New York this week, attending the Clinton Global Initiative, along with fellow Social Edge blogger Tom Watson. On Saturday, she will co-chair the Africa Social Enterprise Forum, a direct response to the question Rod Schwartz recently asked on Social Edge, Are the Only Innovations in Social Entrepreneurship Anglo-Saxon? The same Rod Schwartz wonders this week why so many endowments are invested in conventional financial assets rather than socially driven funds, a question echoed by Leila Chirayath Jana (who will also attend the Africa Social Enterprise Forum) as she looks into the relationships between business and social ventures. Also new on Social Edge is strategy consultant Curtis Chang. After teaching public policy at Harvard and doing development work in Africa, he now offers his Expert Advice on Social Edge. Submit your questions on how to scale your social venture today, then visit our resident funding expert Dr. O, as he shares how two teenage girls turned a tragic death into fund-raising opportunities. And now is the time to say goodbye to fellow blogger Clare Mulvany, whose last post on her One Wild Life goes up today: “Very quickly I stopped trying to reach a definition of Africa, because it does not, cannot, and nor do I think should, exist. Definitions limit. They put boundaries on things. ‘Africa’ is a place that does not need to be contained. Africa is everything.” Join this Week's Live Discussions What is Wrong with the Investment Industry? Maximizing Volunteer Impact Social Entrepreneur: An Insane Job Description?
