News on The Edge Welcome to the Social Edge update! What really works when you strive for social change? We asked Scott Sherman, Executive Director of the Transformative Action Institute, to share the results of his doctoral research. His findings: After identifying a source of injustice, effective agents of social change first put forth a better vision of the future and invite others to join them in building this vision. They then perform a kind of “social aikido” to channel the wealth of large corporations and the power of large governmental organizations. Scott Sherman calls this phenomenon “transformative action,” which leads him to several additional questions, including: Is social entrepreneurship enough to change the world? Join him in the debate, and as you learn how to master the art of “social aikido,” Charles (Hipbone) Cameron asks you to reflect on the Tao of Social Entrepreneurship, a “flowing conversation looking at what can best generate the flow of enthusiasm and funding.” Then check in with Dr. O as he examines Facebook Cause and determines whether he would prescribe it as a fundraiser for your organization. A data point before you hire a full-time Web manager: most Causes raise less than US$100 and the median gift is just a few pennies… But it’s not only about the money, as Kiva Fellow Alana Solimeo discovers in Costa Rica: microfinance is also about “the unquantifiable personal growth small business entrepreneurs achieve while establishing themselves as ingenious members of the productive world.” Serial social entrepreneur Anand Shah would agree with this statement. After Harvard, our new blogger launched Indicorps in Ahmedabad. He is currently CEO of a social enterprise dealing with clean water and a member of the Aspen Institute’s inaugural India Leadership Initiative. Welcome him as he renews "faith in the possibility of running a people-oriented business on the right values in a place where few are willing to try.” Join this Week's Live Discussions What Works in Social Change?
