Highlights of 2009: Top Five Articles In the spirit of awards season, SSIR brings you the best of 2009—starting with the top five most-read articles (as measured by hits on our Web site). We've listed them in order of popularity. Ten Nonprofit Funding Models For-profit executives use business models—such as "low-cost provider" or "the razor and the razor blade"—as a shorthand way to describe and understand the way companies are built and sustained. Nonprofit executives, to their detriment, are not as explicit about their funding models and have not had an equivalent lexicon—until now. The Nonprofit Starvation Cycle A vicious cycle is leaving nonprofits so hungry for decent infrastructure that they can barely function as organizations—let alone serve their beneficiaries. The cycle starts with funders' unrealistic expectations about how much running a nonprofit costs, and results in nonprofits' misrepresenting their costs while skimping on vital systems—acts that feed funders' skewed beliefs. To break the nonprofit starvation cycle, funders must take the lead. Social Entrepreneurship Revisited Social entrepreneurship is one of the most alluring terms on the problem-solving landscape today, and is in use even in the new Obama administration. The President is quite familiar with the term and has embraced a first-of-its-kind investment fund for social entrepreneurship.
