Social Enterprise Coalition activity Nick Clegg is the latest party leader to sign up to Social Enterprise Charter Nick Clegg has become the latest MP to sign the Social Enterprise Charter 2010, adding his name to a growing list that includes Labour, Conservative and Liberal Democrat politicians. Writing to confirm his support Nick Clegg said: "I'm delighted to be able to support this initiative. Social enterprises make an enormous contribution to our prosperity and our society. Social enterprise is a shining example that good business sense and social responsibility can go hand in hand and I wish the sector every success in future." David Cameron MP, Leader of the Conservative Party, and Caroline Lucas, Leader of the Green Party, have both added their names to the Charter in the last fortnight and the number of signatories currently stands at more than thirty. In the run up to the 2010 election, the Coalition is asking current and prospective parliamentarians to sign up to the Social Enterprise Charter to recognise and support the work of social enterprises across the UK. If you’d like to help us to get even more politicians to pledge their support to social enterprise, please download our campaign pack which will help you with everything from emailing your local candidates to getting coverage for your social enterprise in your local newspaper. The pressure to reduce public spending has caused politicians to look for new ways to deliver services and yesterday's conference comes within weeks of policy announcements from both Labour and the Conservatives which place social enterprise models at the heart of their manifesto plans for the future of public service delivery. Key speakers at the event organised by the Social Enterprise Coalition were, Lord Victor Adebowale, Social Enterprise Ambassador and Chief Executive of Turning Point, Mark Thaxter, Policy Lead for the Social Enterprise Unit at the Department of Health, and Norman Lamb MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for Health. As well as discussing the current climate for social enterprise the event also offered practical advice to those interested in starting their own social enterprise within the health and social care system. Bob Ricketts, director of system management and new enterprise at the Department of Health, used the event to reaffirm the opportunities for social enterprise in open competition for NHS contracts. Recent comments from Health Secretary, Andy Burnham, in which he suggested that the NHS remained the preferred provider of services had caused concern that primary care trusts (PCTs) would be discouraged from commissioning from the third sector. (Read the full story in Social Enterprise magazine) Peter Holbrook, CEO of the Social Enterprise Coalition said: "Yesterday's conference was very timely given the recent political debate around social enterprise delivery of public services. The next government, whatever its make-up, will be looking to improve value for money across the public sector and social enterprise can help to do this. Social enterprises working in health and social care across the UK are already achieving great success in improving services, empowering staff and tackling health inequalities and given the right support they will continue to play a key role in creating better public services." The Time is Now which launched on 16 March outlines the case for an expanded role for the third sector and calls on government to get four things right in order to support a thriving civil society: - Smart investment in an age of austerity; use funding vehicles best suited to the desired outcome and continue to develop social invesment
- Improved public service markets and the democratisation of commissioning; ensure a level playing field and transparency in public procurement
- A supportive architecture; sustain a department and minister with sole responsibility for the third sector, streamline regulation and invest in building the sector's capacity
- An environmentally sustainable relationship; that delivers on the recommendations of the third sector ministerial taskforce, embedding green outcomes in public procurement and placing the third sector at the heart of a green economy
The manifesto was launched at an open event where Angela Smith MP, Minister for the Third Sector, Shadow Minister, Nick Hurd MP, and Liberal Democrats spokeswoman, Jenny Willott MP addressed questions and ideas from the floor.
