NEWS 1. Call to Action for Nonprofits to Support Nonprofit Commercial Activities: Public Hearings in August Bill 65, Ontario’s proposed Not-for-profit Corporations Act The Ontario Nonprofit Network (ONN) is an incubated project of the Centre for Social Innovation (CSI); together these organizations have been leading advocates for Bill 65, which has the potential to dramatically change the opportunities available for Ontario nonprofits, including the ability of nonprofits to engage in commercial activities as long as revenues are used to forward our public benefit objectives. Public Hearings are taking place this month for the Standing Committee on Social Policy to submit its report and recommendations to the Ontario Legislature on September 13th. Call to Action for Nonprofit Leaders: Help make a strong showing at these Public Hearings by making a presentation at one of these hearings. New Edition of the Canadian Social Enterprise Guide Now Available Enterprising Non-Profits has just released the second edition of the Canadian Social Enterprise Guide. This free publication is Canada's foremost resource for helping non-profit organizations create viable revenue generating programs. Latornell Conservation Symposium, one of Ontario’s premier annual environmental events, practitioners, policy makers, nongovernmental organizations, academics and businesses come together to network and discuss the challenges and opportunities in Ontario’s conservation field. This year’s theme is Biodiversity: Connecting People, Land and Water. There are a number of grants available to help students and those affiliated with Ontario NGOs attend. Four Directions: Environmental Art Installation at Evergreen Brickworks Intallation Opens September 23, 2010 Evergreen at the Brickworks Toronto Free The public art organization No. 9 Contemporary Art & the Environment, with curator Andrea Carson, will mount Four Directions, an environmentally themed video installation in celebration of the opening of Evergreen at the Brickworks. The exhibition is designed to reflect the mandate of the public art organization No. 9: essentially that contemporary art can stimulate positive social and environmental change. The group video exhibition features four powerful environmentally themed video artworks, each screened inside one of four restored drying kilns (long tunnels). As the viewer progresses through each tunnel, s/he will witness environmental devastation, followed by works that engage the emotions to suggest mindfulness, respect and honour for our environment.
