Thank You: Supporters Help Grameen Foundation Win $200,000 in Funding through Members Project At Grameen Foundation, we fight for the underdog: the poor woman who believes in herself and believes that she can make a better life for her family, even when no one else does. At times, Grameen Foundation itself is the underdog, like during the Members Project competition in which we were pitted against larger, better-known organizations for $200,000 in funding. But because you believe in what we do and you believe that we can work together to one day end poverty, you took time out of your busy schedules to vote and to ensure that your networks did the same. We thank you sincerely from the bottom of our hearts for helping us win funding that is so crucial to creating economic opportunities for poor people worldwide. |

Vikram and Meera Gandhi: Fighting Poverty is a Family Affair He’s a power player at a financial services company. She’s a filmmaker and head of an international foundation. Together, husband-and-wife team Vikram and Meera Gandhi find time to join in the fight against poverty. Vikram, a Managing Director of Credit Suisse and Global Head of its Financial Institutions Group, is a Grameen Foundation board member. He was instrumental in defining our strategic direction, and helped solidify our presence in Hong Kong. The Gandhis have hosted Grameen Foundation events at their home, and Meera features us in her new film, “Giving Back,” named after her foundation. “Having visited Grameen borrowers in Morocco and India, I fully understand the life-changing impact that microcredit has on people’s lives,” Meera said. That’s one reason why, in the Gandhi family, helping to end poverty doesn’t just stop with mom and dad. Daughter Kiran interned at our Hong Kong office for two months, researching poverty statistics for the Asia region. Have you shared your passion for fighting poverty with your friends and family? Volunteer Lends Years of Experience toward the Fight Against Poverty Elizabeth Hughes, a Bankers without Borders® (BwB) volunteer with more than 16 years of international development experience, has made a difference. “International development organizations and funding institutions share many of the same goals,” she says. Elizabeth believes microfinance is an exciting approach to empowering people living below the poverty line, because it allows them to take an active role in changing their own lives. Her interest in Grameen Foundation began after reading Professor Muhammad Yunus’ Banker to the Poor and Small Loans, Big Dreams by President and CEO Alex Counts. Elizabeth’s expertise as the Washington representative of Cisco Systems—a longtime funder of Grameen Foundation—and her passion for microfinance drive the exceptional work she’s performed as a volunteer. Her recent volunteer work has been invaluable in helping Grameen Foundation pinpoint funding and partnership opportunities both with U.S. government agencies and institutions like the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank. If you’re also interested in applying your expertise to the work Grameen Foundation is doing around the world, you can find out more about the BwB program at BankersWithoutBorders.com. Meet Eha: Connecting Communities Today, Funding Education Tomorrow Eha remembers how she and her mother had to fight for survival. Even as a young child, she knew she didn’t want to grow up living her life this way. So when RUMA offered her the chance to run her own business, she jumped at the opportunity.
Eha lives in Tangerang, West Java, Indonesia, where many people can’t afford to purchase telephone airtime. But RUMA supplies pre-paid telephone air minutes in small amounts at a discounted price through a network of businesses, like Eha’s, run by the poorest of the poor in Indonesia. With the profits she earns, Eha is saving to fund her children’s education, buy a new home for her family, and expand her business. |
