Emerging Sectors
By: Kevin Jones

Three technology sectors are showing the potential to deliver high social and environmental impact with no discount to return. Off-grid or microgrid power in India and Sub-Saharan Africa, some mobile applications, and medical technology in India have two key similarities.

First, these technologies are, by their nature, in some settings, a public good. Sustainable, solar-powered microgrid, village electricity, for instance, removes kerosene lamps that kill more than a million people a year through indoor air pollution. The cost of lighting can go down 1/3 for the base of the pyramid customer, and there's light all night as needed, rather than, say, just 90 minutes a night with a kerosene lamp to let the smartest son study.  >>>Read More

A Big Gate Looms on the Horizon
By: Kevin Jones

With as much as $13 million in new investment, GATE Impact's marketplace platform is poised to move the social capital market to a new level. In addition to new equity, GATE Impact also starts with half a billion dollars from investors who want to mix meaning with their money. The third piece to the puzzle for GATE was linking up with Robert Rubenstein, of Triple Bottom Line Investing (TBLI) to help build its pipeline of companies and funds to match up with the pent-up investor demand.

A deeply connected, American-born investment matchmaker based in Amsterdam, with experience in Asia, Rubenstein's TBLI conferences - focused on institutional and ultra-high net worth individuals - have been pioneers in the concept of mobilizing capital to produce a social and/or environmental benefit in addition to a profitable financial return. >>>Read More

Private Capital & Early Impact in Europe

By: Margaret McGovern

The social capital market is scaling. Brussels, London and Washington are awakening to social innovation funds. Greece, Spain and Portugal are steering hopes of economic recovery towards social enterprise models.  Banks and pension funds are setting up 'impact' departments. Family foundations are slowly and steadily moving from granting to risking.

After 10 years of involvement with angel investors, I experience their profile as entrepreneurial and independent; words like 'government' and 'institutions' and 'slow and steady' are not what would excite an angel to invest. So, as the SOCAP market scales and becomes more structured, as Unltd in UK moves into the 'missing middle' and the European Investment Bank (EIB) creates an impact fund - is there still a need for private capital and early impact angels? >>>Read More

History in the Making: A recap of Skoll and OxfordJam

By: Amy Benziger

Skoll is a whirlwind. Surrounded by familiar and new faces, rushing from meeting to meeting while squeezing in a lecture here and there, it's difficult to truly digest the sheer amount of incredible minds and catalytic organizations that are in the room at the Skoll World Forum.

I kicked off my time in Oxford with the SOCAP dinner hosted with Rianta Capital at OxfordJam. OxfordJam has grown from a small outgrowth of folks meeting outside the halls of Skoll to a full two days of speakers, dinners, and cabarets. I had the good fortune of sitting in the middle of the Cheng brothers: Paul Cheng of Venturesome and Mark Cheng of Chelwood Capital as well as Senior Advisor to Ashoka. Pretty impressive family gene pool! >>>Read More

Introducing Naomi Smith

Currently completing her Master's in Strategic Sustainability at the Blekinge Institute of Technology in Sweden, Naomi joins the SOCAP/Europe blog to share her discoveries, questions and queries as she travels around Europe researching early-stage impact investing and sustainable social enterprise for her graduate thesis. Naomi is also part of MakeSense open project working with social entrepreneurs from around the world to overcome the challenges they encounter.

Naomi grew up in rural England and Toronto, Canada. Her love of traveling and culture has led her to be an inquisitive nomad for the last few years, living, working and studying in Cuba, Mexico, Norway, France and now Sweden.

Naomi completed her bachelor's degree in International Development in 2008 and a year of Political Science at Science-Po in Toulouse, France last year. When not having admittedly nerdy conversations about investor due diligence or what that word 'sustainability' really means, Naomi enjoys any excuse to be creative and explore.
