Investor Spotlight: FMO, the Dutch Development Finance Institution

Each month, an impact investor discusses with the GIIN their motivations, their impact investment strategy, and challenges they face in this growing industry.  This month, we spoke to Nanno Kleiterp, Chief Executive Officer of the Dutch development finance institution FMO. With an investment portfolio of more than five billion Euros, FMO uses debt and equity financing to support development in more than 60 developing countries, with a particular focus on increasing access to financial services, energy, affordable housing, agribusiness, food, and water. Mr. Kleiterp discusses FMO’s impact investment approach and offers advice for new participants in this growing market.

GIIN Investors’ Council Welcomes Three New Members

Athena Capital is a multi-family office and investment manager based outside of Boston, Massachusetts.  Athena provides investment advisory and wealth management services to a select group of private clients, institutions, and endowments.  With impact investing mandates growing across its client base, Athena is actively integrating impact investing strategies into client portfolios, covering a range of geographies and sectors.

FMO is the Dutch development bank. By investing in entrepreneurs in emerging economies, FMO aims to create long-term sustainable development impact. FMO makes debt and equity investments, mainly focused in housing, energy, finance, agribusiness, food, and water. Outside these focus areas, FMO co-invests with experienced partners. Capitalized by the Dutch government, and also investing capital on behalf of global private investors, FMO manages a EUR 5.3 billion portfolio invested across 60 countries.

UBS is a global financial services firm based in Switzerland and operating in more than 50 countries. In 2010, UBS created a dedicated Philanthropy and Values-Based Investing team under its Wealth Management unit. The Values-Based Investing team supports ultra-high net worth clients, families and foundations in aligning their environmental and social values with their portfolios using portfolio screening, socially responsible investing (SRI), thematic investments, and impact investing. UBS’s first impact investment product offering is a fund-of-funds that finances small and medium enterprises in developing countries, focused in the sectors of healthcare, agriculture, education, basic infrastructure, and access to financial services.

Recap: Second Annual GIIN Investors’ Council Meeting

Last month, members of the GIIN Investors’ Council gathered in New York to discuss emerging trends and development in the impact investment industry, including opportunities in Indian base of the pyramid (BoP) enterprises, the U.S. Small Business Administration’s $1 billion impact investing initiative, as well as a growing interest in impact investing among high-net-worth individuals. Members also contributed to the ongoing development of industry tools IRIS, ImpactBase, and GIIRS.

The Investors’ Council is the GIIN’s membership organization comprised of large-scale active impact investors, including diversified financial institutions, large-scale family offices, institutional investors, specialized banks, fund managers, and private foundations making program and mission-related investments.
