Promise and Progress: Market-Based Solutions to Poverty in Africa
by Monitor Inclusive Markets
After presenting the results of a 16-month survey of 439 enterprises active in 14 sectors across nine sub-Saharan nations, this report concludes that businesses making use of market-based solutions can have a significant positive impact in the fight against poverty. Businesses do so by engaging poor people as customers – offering socially-beneficial products at affordable prices, or engaging them as business associates – suppliers, agents, or distributors – to improve the lives and livelihoods of people living at the bottom of the economic pyramid.

ImpactBase Gains Early Traction

Since launching in February, ImpactBase has attracted more than 260 subscribers and nearly 100 impact investment funds. ImpactBase is a global directory of impact investment funds created by the GIIN to help bring order to the fragmented impact investing industry. Through a powerful online search platform, ImpactBase subscribers can look for funds that fit with their impact investment interests and objectives. Subscribers include pension funds, government agencies, charitable organizations, family offices, investment bankers, and high-net-worth individuals from around the globe. Funds currently listing on the site are diverse across geographies, asset classes, investment styles, social and environmental goals, and sectors.

GIIN Investors' Council Welcomes CDC

CDC is the UK's development finance institution. Owned by the UK Government’s Department for International Development (DFID), CDC invests much-needed capital in promising businesses in the poorest parts of the world to stimulate the private sector, drive growth, and reduce poverty. Its geographic focus is sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, providing capital to businesses and entrepreneurs through private equity funds, debt, guarantees, and direct and co-investments.
