Trade unions and social enterprise: time to find common ground
Ceri Jones, Head of Policy and Research at Social Enterprise UK, authored a recent blogpost which appeared on the Guardian Social Enterprise network calling on trade unions and social enterprise to recognise their common ground.  The full article is still available to read here.
To accompany this piece, we've published a draft paper which proposes a very basic set of values and operating principles in relation to public service reform and the role of social enterprise within that. It is there to be discussed so please have a look and if you have any comments send them to Olof Jonsdottir - olof.jonsdottir@socialenterprise.org.uk.

Upcoming Social Enterprise UK events
Social Enterprise UK will be delivering a number of events during September. These are outlined below but full details are available on the website.
Right to run
8 September - Liverpool
A one day event for public sector staff interested in setting up a social enterprise or mutual.
More information on the programme and how to book can be found on the website.

Two at the Top
22 September - Manchester
A one day event which will focus specifically on the relationship between the CEO and Chair for social enterprises moving out of the public sector into social enterprise models.
This event requires BOTH the Chair and CEO of the same organisation to attend.
This event is free to attend for Right to Request social enterprises with a cost for other any other delegates.

Social Enterprise Leadership Development course
From 14 September
Developed by Social Enterprise UK and delivered by Real Partners CIC the course includes personal leadership development days, the opportunity to meet and learn from other leaders through social enterprise visits, roundtables, and peer-to-peer events.
There are only a small number of places remaining. Application forms can be found on the website.

Nigel and Karen Lowthrop
Karen Lowthrop appointed MBE
Leading social entrepreneur and Social Enterprise UK Board member, Karen Lowthrop, has been appointed an Honorary Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in recognition of her services to social enterprise in Lincolnshire. Karen (pictured above with husband, Nigel) is Chief Executive of Hill Holt Wood and fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.  
In 1997 Karen and her husband, Nigel Lowthrop, founded Hill Holt Wood having purchased the woodland two years earlier. In 2002 the environmental social enterprise was born and Hill Holt Wood now enjoys national prominence as a leading example of how natural resources can be maintained and developed for the benefit of the local community.     

Andrew Mason, Head of Finance at Hill Holt Wood, said:

“We are delighted that Karen has been recognised in such a manner for her passion and commitment to Hill Holt Wood's work with disadvantaged young people in Lincolnshire,  and look forward to many more years of successful community involvement.”
Peter Holbrook, Chief Executive of Social Enterprise UK said:
"We are delighted Karen has been given this honour. It is very well deserved. Karen is a true leader in the social enterprise movement, and her work has touched the lives of many thousands of people. Hill Holt Wood has proven a turning point in the lives of many young people who needed the sort of imaginitive, practical support it provides.”

The award was not announced in January because Karen is Irish and honours to foreign and commonwealth citizens must be approved by the individual's home country and are announced throughout the year.  Karen will receive her award in September 2011.

Consultations

Independent Review on Social Mobility & Child Poverty call for evidence
The Independent Review on Social Mobility & Child Poverty has launched a call for evidence which asks for contributions from a wide range of people and organisations on how social mobility and child poverty can best be tackled.
It explores questions around how child poverty and social mobility are linked, what the challenges are and asks for ideas on what potential solutions might be. It seeks views on the Government’s strategies, ideas on how best to measure progress, and asks how projects targeting child poverty and social mobility can be set up, effectively evaluated and successfully rolled out. 
The findings from the call for evidence will build on work already undertaken – including the 2011 child poverty consultation, three independent reviews by Frank Field, Graham Allen and Dame Clare Tickell, and the 2009 Fair Access to the Professions report.

I Will Tell International Film Festival 2011

I Will Tell, a dynamic young international film festival, will feature over 100 films and special events for 11 days and film-filmed nights from Tuesday 30th August to Friday 9th September at 3 venues near Euston station.
The festival is organised by Social Enterprise UK member, Zion Social Enterprise, and this year will be celebrating its fifth year with film screenings, post-screening discussions and the chance to win £5,000 to make your own film.

Informing civil society: the work of the Third Sector Research Centre

Labour Open Day

Charity and voluntary organisations are being invited to a free Open Day at the Labour Party Annual Conference in Liverpool.

The Open Day, the first of its kind from any political party, is an opportunity for you to come and discuss the challenges you are facing as an organisation, your priorities and concerns at policy workshops and open discussion events.

The event will take place on Wednesday 28 September at the Arena Convention Centre Liverpool, Kings Dock, Liverpool. The deadline for registration is Friday 30 August 2011.

Resources
New Capital Growth Fund opens for health and social care social enterprises
The Social Investment Business would like to invest in social enterprises working in health or social care.
Until 16 September, they’ll be taking applications from health and social care organisations for capital grants and loans.  They will be awarding grants of £50,000 to £150,000 in value. Loans are also available if the organisation can show it is able to repay. Investments of over £150,000 will include a loan element.  
The Social Investment Business, with Local Partnerships, manages the SEIF on behalf of the Department of Health.

£40,000 kick-start funding available
The North West Social Value Foundation (SVF) is a membership organisation formed by North West NHS Organisations committed to promoting the development of Social Value.
In order to deliver on its mission, SVF has identified £40,000 to invest in a number of ‘kick-start’ projects between NHS delivery bodies and the voluntary and community sector or social enterprises.  The Social Value Foundation currently has £40,000 to invest, with no minimum or maximum limit for any proposal. It is hoped that if successful, additional resources may be released.
It is looking for projects or ideas that go the extra mile to make a difference to communities. They should be partnerships of NHS organisations working with a social enterprise or VCS organisation.

Initial expressions of interest should be submitted by 30 September 2011. Those proposals nominated to progress to an investment panel stage will be notified by 10 October 2011, in readiness to pitch on either 20 October or 3 November, 2011.

The Startups Awards are now open for entries and recognise ambitious start-up businesses that have made an impact in the UK. The judging panel comprises accomplished entrepreneurs, industry experts and business journalists. Now in its eighth year, the Startups Awards have earned a reputation for attracting and rewarding some of the most inspiring businesses in the UK. Previous winners in the Social Enterprise category including The CREATE Foundation, Goodwill Solutions and Social Enterprise UK member, Cool2Care.

Guardian Social Enterprise Award
The Guardian Social Enterprise network is looking for the UK's most promising social enterprises who have the potential to make a big impact. Tell them why your social enterprise's venture has good growth potential, is ready to "scale-up" and deliver greater social impact
Pitches must videoed and must be no longer than three minutes long.
Four outstanding finalists will be showcased online and at the Guardian Social Enterprise summit 2011, where delegates will vote for the overall winner.

The Social Investment Business ‘An interview with…’ podcast series released on iTunes
The Social Investment Business has made its monthly ‘An interview with…’ podcast series, which talks to leaders throughout the civil society and non-profit sector, available to download on iTunes.
The series has posed a mixture of provoking and fun questions to CEOs throughout the sector including Kate Bull from The People’s Supermarket, Rodney Schwartz from ClearlySo and Lord Victor Adebowale from Turning Point. Topics debated have ranged from health service reforms to Big Society, fair trade to opportunities for young people in social enterprise and the global social entrepreneurship market to social impact measurement. 
The podcast series consists of 10 episodes and the Social Investment Business will also shortly be announcing a competition for social enterprises to win the opportunity to be interviewed about their work.

     Race Equality Foundation
Free peer learning sessions for social enterprises providing services to children, young people and families
The Race Equality Foundation is offering peer learning sessions to support small voluntary, community and social enterprise organisations to explore how they can make sure they are able to meet the needs of all children, young people and families.
The peer learning sessions are targeted at those working for small voluntary, community and social enterprise organisations providing services to children, young people and families. The programme will consist of three sessions between October 2011 and March 2012.  A session will last for 2-3 hours and provide an opportunity for participants to learn from and with each other.   The sessions are limited to 10 organisations and are free of charge.
These sessions are part of a Department for Education programme of work to improve outcomes for children, young people and families.
