GIIN Releases the First IRIS Performance Data Report

The GIIN released today Data Driven: A Performance Analysis for the Impact Investing Industry, the first performance data report of its Impact Reporting and Investment Standards (IRIS) initiative.

IRIS is a universal language for social, environmental, and financial performance reporting. It was developed as a tool for the impact investing industry to improve transparency, increase the credibility of social and environmental performance data, and facilitate investment comparability and performance benchmarking.

The report presents early findings from 2,394 organizations – including 1,931 microfinance institutions and 463 other mission-driven organizations – that work with leading impact investment intermediaries. In addition to presenting early aggregated performance data, this report’s objective is to increase adoption of IRIS and to encourage impact investors, funds, and mission-driven organizations to strengthen future market intelligence by voluntarily contributing data for analysis to the IRIS initiative.

How Standards Emerge: A Discussion of IRIS in Innovations Journal

The GIIN contributed an article about developing and establishing the IRIS reporting standards for the emerging impact investing industry to the current issue of MIT’s Innovations journal. The article makes note of the instrumental role investors and network associations are playing by demonstrating their own use of social, environmental, and financial performance metrics to help establish best practices. Financial reporting standards have only become universal after decades and longer, and in this article, the GIIN discusses its goal to accelerate the establishment of common social and environmental performance reporting practices with the support of the impact investing community.

GIIN Board Chairman Antony Bugg-Levine Co-Authors Book on Impact Investing

Launching this week at SOCAP11, Impact Investing: Transforming How We Make Money While Making a Difference charts the catalytic path of this new industry, explaining how it is and can be a positive disruptive force. It shows how impact investing is a transformational vehicle for delivering "blended value" throughout the investment spectrum, giving a single name to a set of activities previously siloed in enclaves, revealing how they are linked within what is becoming a new field of investing. Written by GIIN Board Chairman Antony Bugg-Levine and Jed Emerson, two leaders in the growing field of impact investing, the book defines this emerging industry for participants on all sides of the funding equation, including investors, funders, and social entrepreneurs.
