  A great September has gone by and there are lots of news, announcements, and updates we would like to share with you. Global Social Business Summit 2011 – Pioneering for Results
  • It is time again for the yearly Global Social Business Summit taking place from 10-12 November 2011 in Vienna, Austria. Worldwide social business pioneers from corporate, political, academic or civil societal background will gather to share results, develop goals and initiate new projects. A special focus will be on the achievement of the UN Millennium Development Goals through social business. In his role as MDG Advocate, Prof. Yunus will launch the YY Millennium Tour, a social business initiative that contributes strategically to the achievement of the MDGs.     
  • Diverse workshops will provide space for connected creativity and networking
  • A wide range of inspiring speakers will share their view on social business: UN representatives including Ban Ki-moon (Secretary-General) (virtual address), Thomas Stelzer (Assistant Secretary-General), Daud Mohamad (Deputy Director-General UNIAEA) and Sandeep Chawla (Deputy Executive-Director of UNODC) will talk about the importance of the UN Millennium Development Goals and social business
  • Panel discussions with business representatives such as Emmanuel Faber (COO Danone Groupe), Jeff George (CEO Sandoz) and John Davies (Vice President Intel) and with politicians like EU Commissioners Michel Barnier and László Andor, Fernando Pimentel (Minister of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade of Brazil), Rudolf Hundstorfer (Minister of Labour, Social Affairs and Consumer Protection of Austria) and Fatima Al Balooshi (Minister of Human Rights and Social Development of the Kingdom of Bahrain) will cover topics like Globalization 2.0 and Political Frameworks for Social Businesses.
  • In a “Pioneering for Results” session social businesses together with entrepreneurs will talk about their experiences and results. Entrepreneurs will also have the chance to ask questions to EU Commissioner László Andor at the Space for Entrepreneurs (if you are interested in applying for the Space for Entrepreneurs please click here).  A cultural program with a talk about what art can do for social business at the Museumsquartier Vienna and screening of “Bonsai People”, a movie about social business, will round up the summit.
  • Two additional pre-meetings will take place on 9 November: the Academia Meeting and the Young Challengers Meeting, which are aiming at harnessing the potential involvement of top young talents and academic expertise to foster the social business concept.   • And don’t forget: Ron Garan, NASA Astronaut and Prof. Yunus will be giving a public speech on 10 November, 8pm at Exhibition Centre Messe Wien  – everyone is invited to come!

      YY Haiti attended the annual meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative 
  • GCL became an official member of the Clinton Global Initiative and is proud to participate in this inspiring and enabling marketplace of ideas, resources, and knowledge.
  • Professor Yunus met the President of Haiti, Mr. Martelly and addressed the economic advisory board of Haiti in a speech on the potential of social business for the advancement of the Haitian economy.
  • The Inter-American Investment Corporation and GCL established a partnership to explore ways in which they can finance social businesses in Haiti.

 
Grameen Caldas actively seeking for funding
  • Panela: Good news is that we have identified a production site that is run by indigenous people and that already fulfills all production standards needed for a professional Panela manufacturing
  • Bienestar: After having won the business plan contest, the business model of Bienestar continues to evolve while the pilot is running with approximately 100 members so far. Once the new business plan has been completed we seek financing to take Bienestar to the next level
  • Como en Casa: Our rural tourism business model is still under construction but pilot testing with 3 families so far have been performed – expansion pending

Yunus Social Business Fund Mumbai is ramping-up
  • We are now in the process of evaluating about 6-7 new social business for funding.
  • We are also calling for more applications! Please write in to yymumbai@grameencl.com if you have a social business in India that needs funding.
  • The Yunus Social Business Fund Mumbai is proud to announce that several of its investees are likely to present their social businesses at the Space for Entrepreneurs at the GSBS. Please write to yymumbai@grameencl.com if you are from India and are interested in applying for a slot

GCL Mumbai and the Yunus Social Business Fund Mumbai with two exciting new university collaborations!
  • We are official social business partner to Eureka Social, the social business plan competition organized by IIT Bombay´s E Cell.  YY Mumbai will assist in judging and screening of the social business entries and consider any of the social business winners for funding by the Yunus Social Business Fund Mumbai
  • We are also an official social idea partner to the E Cell of IIT-Kharagpur for 2011-12. We will assist in judging their social business plan competition Empresario and also offer to consider funding any social business winners through the Yunus Social Business Fund Mumbai
  • Aarti Wiig will be speaking about social business later this month at an awareness drive organized by IIT Kharagpur in Mumbai and she also conducted a workshop for management students at Don Bosco Institute of Management and Research in September   

 GCL started lecture series at Hult International Business School
  • In September, GCL introduced about 45 MSE students into the first module of the lecture series at Hult International Business School in London
  • The lecture series is divided into two modules: Beginning with a “Landscaping of Social Entrepreneurship & Social Business”, followed by the “Financing Social Businesses” module.
  • In the following classes students will be challenged with case studies and activated to present their ideas and sensibility for social problems

Inspiring “Change Model: Action Framing and Social Business” Workshop at NYU
  • On September 17& 18the Tisch School of Arts of New York University hosted an inspiring two day workshop with great speakers and motivated participants from all sectors around the globe.
  • At the first day, speakers included Utku Teksoz, Economic Advisor to the UN Secretary-General, Bill Moggridge, Director of the Smithsonian Institution Cooper-Hewitt at the National Design Museum, and Robert Kirpatrick, Director of the UN Global Pulse
  • On the second day GCL conducted a Social Business Lab, with participants working on concrete social business ideas
  • As a highlight of the second day’s session, the participants presented their ideas  to Prof. Yunus, who gave his feedback to each idea 

German Social Business Forum, 21st/22nd November 2011, Wiesbaden announced great speakers!
  • Top speakers confirmed: A dedicated program highlight will be a discussion between Jürgen Fitschen, designated Chairman of the Board of Deutsche Bank AG, and Prof. Muhammad Yunus on the topic “How to build a better World”. Also confirmed are Ramin Khabirpour, MD Danone, the highly popular comedian and author Eckart von Hirschhausen, Wiesbaden’s Lord Mayor Dr. Helmut Müller and founder of the Genisis Institute, Peter Spiegel.
  • On 21st November we will run a special Social Business Lab for high school students: 15-18 year olds will develop their own social business ideas to be presented to the participants of the Forum. The best ideas will be awarded with a personal meeting with Prof. Yunus.

  • Russian Social Business Forum // 20th and 21st of October 2011: Hosted by the Russian Microfinance Center and the National Partnership of Microfinance Market Stakeholders, the Russian Social Business Forum will take place on October 20th and 21st in Moscow. The Forum will focus on the opportunities social business offers in the context of Russian monocities and on innovative financial products to finance social business.   • Global Social Business Summit // 10th-12th of November 2011: This year the Global Social Business Summit will move on to a new location in Europe! Save the date for 10-12 November 2011 in Vienna, Austria and check out the official website www.gsbs2011.com.   • German Social Business Forum // 21st and 22nd of November 2011: The first ever German Social Business Forum will take place on November 21st in Mönchengladbach and November 22nd in Wiesbaden, Germany. It will bring together representatives from politics, academia, business and civil society to rally political support for social business in Germany.
