Social Enterprise UK calls on Church of England to use its economic power to break financial vicious circle
Responding to an article by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, published in the Financial Times this week, in which he writes that the Church of England has a ‘proper interest in the ethics in the financial world’, Social Enterprise UK is calling on philanthropic organisations including The Church of England to ‘take a moral lead’ and invest ethically. The Church Commissioners for England is the sixth wealthiest charitable foundation in the world, with a portfolio held mostly in company shares and property.
Social Enterprise UK’s chief executive, Peter Holbrook, said:
“Rowan Williams writes that ‘it isn’t easy to say what we should do differently. It is time to be more specific’, but the Church of England and civil society organisations everywhere have a very specific opportunity to take action, and lead us out of the financial status quo.
“The revised guidance from the Charity Commission comes at a very fortunate time and could kick start a revolution in our civil society. This issue will not go away. We can expect a rising tide of campaigns in the next decade pressing civil society organisations on how they invest. Simply seeking a financial return will only worsen the vicious cycle we are in.”

Society Profits campaign gears up for Social Enterprise Day
With Social Enterprise Day now just two weeks away, the Society Profits campaign has stepped up a gear with a host of organisations and individuals pledging support for the message “Choose social enterprise, and society profits.”
The Young Foundation, UnLtd, Clearly So, Triodos Bank and the Nexters have all signed up in the past week along with Caroline Lucas MP, Leader of the Green Party. They join Business in the Community, Divine and the Big Society Network on the list of supporters you can find on our website.

Social Enterprise UK launches social franchisees manual
A new how-to guide to social franchising has been launched by the Social Enterprise UK.  “Social Franchising: A Guide for Franchisees” provides a general introduction to social franchising from the perspective of the franchisee, and gives practical advice on how to decide if franchising is the right  course of action, on selecting a franchise, and on building a successful franchise relationship. It also includes a number of case studies of existing franchises including Riverford Organic Vegetables (pictured above).

This new resource accompanies the Social Franchising Manual, which was published by Social Enterprise UK earlier this year primarily for franchisors. Both guides have been developed in response to recent research showing that a number of obstacles stop some social enterprise organisations acquiring franchises.

Social Investment Explained

Social franchising workshops
8 and 21 November
Suffolk and London
To provide practical help to social enterprises wishing to explore their franchise potential, Social Enterprise UK has teamed up with School for Social Entrepreneurs and CAN to devise a new social franchising programme.
Participants will be introduced to a wide range of established and successful social franchisors working in the private and third sectors to help them understand the challenges of growing and replicating a social enterprise.
The School for Social Entrepreneurs are running Social Franchising Workshops across the country in October and November, with prices starting from £50 for social enterprises.

An Enterprising Future
Thursday 10 November

Social Enterprise UK is holding an event to bring together social enterprise start-ups and VCS organisations looking to move to a social enterprise model within the children and young people’s sector. As well as hearing from inspirational speakers and learning about issues facing the sector, the event will provide delegates with a forum in which they can learn new skills, develop their business acumen, and better understand the social enterprise model through group workshops, one-to-one surgeries, and networking.

Two Social Enterprise UK members shortlisted for the Guardian Social Enterprise Award
SCA Group and Brighter Future Workshop are amongst the final four social enterprises still in the running to win the Guardian Social Enterprise Award 2011.
The award is supported by Bates Wells and Braithwaite and Haysmacintyre, and aims to find the UK's most promising social enterprise with the potential to make a big impact.
Southampton-based SCA Group offers health and social care services across the south including care, NHS dentistry, transport and a health and wellbeing centre.
Brighter Future Workshop (pictured above) specialise in recycling, repairing and reselling mobility equipment. They also give young, disadvantaged and disabled people opportunities to work with them to help recycle the equipment that is donated.

The finalists will be showcased at the Guardian Social Enterprise 2011 summit on Tuesday 8 November, where delegates will vote for the overall winner.

Social AdVentures
Social AdVentures shortlisted to win a Philip Baxendale Award 2011
Social Enterprise UK member, Social AdVentures, has been nominated in the 2011 Philip Baxendale Awards for Excellence in Employee Ownership.  The awards seek to reward public sector employees’ efforts in setting up their own social enterprise or mutual.
Social AdVentures have been shortlisted to win the Public Sector Employee Led Mutual Organisation (ELMO) Award which celebrates the most impressive group of employees to have spun out of the public sector and showing progress in transforming the service to improve outcomes for their users. The award is one of five new categories launched this year to acknowledge the growth, development and diversification of employee ownership in both the private and public sectors during 2011.
Social AdVentures is  jointly owned by service users, it employees and local Salford people. It aims to support all local people to lead happier and healthier lives.
Award winners will be announced on Wednesday 9 November at a ceremony held on the eve of this year’s Employee Ownership Association Annual Conference in Birmingham.

Triodos Corporate Finance raises £600,000 for new social enterprise Bristol Together CIC
Ethical investment specialist Triodos Bank has announced that it has successfully arranged the initial funding for Bristol Together, a groundbreaking social enterprise that supports a major programme of job creation for ex-offenders in Bristol. 
Triodos acted as lead advisors for the initial fundraising from the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and a private individual, successfully securing a £600,000 investment to purchase and renovate empty properties in Bristol.
The investment will allow Bristol Together to buy empty, sub-standard properties. These properties will then be fully repaired and refurbished. Over the next five years the social enterprise expects to create full-time jobs for over 200 of some of the most excluded people in and around Bristol. 
Bristol Together will partner with social enterprises, such as the Restore Trust and Aspire. The enterprises will employ the ex-offenders and the long-term unemployed to repair and refurbish a range of several more properties. 
The sale proceeds from developed properties will be utilised to acquire further properties in need of renovation - and thus create even more employment opportunities.
In time it is the intention of the directors of Bristol Together to replicate this model in other large UK cities.

South west social enterprise body to close
Rise, the regional organisation in South West England which supports social enterprises, is set to close.
On the 1 November 2011, an Extraordinary General Meeting was held with the Rise membership to discuss the dissolution of Rise. In light of the forthcoming closure of the South West RDA and the end of its contract with Rise, a number of different options were considered by the Rise Board of Directors, resulting in resolutions that were recommended to the membership.
The dissolution of Rise was approved with the required 75% majority, together with an agreement that the Rise Board has clear authority to conduct an orderly winding-up of the Company and such transfer of assets, within a timeline to be determined as they see fit.
Andrew North, Chair of the Board of Directors, stated:
“It is with great sadness that the Rise Board of Directors has been tasked with the closure of Rise, but with the demise of the South West RDA and a lack of Government support for social enterprises, there is no other alternative. We encourage social enterprises to seek support from each other, and through the certification authority the Social Enterprise Mark, which Rise set up. We hope that the network of South West social enterprises which Rise has been instrumental in growing, will continue to thrive.
Peter Holbrook, chief executive of Social Enterprise UK said:
“With funding cuts and the removal of Regional Development Agencies we always knew this was a possibility, but it remains sad news for the social enterprise sector, which needs infrastructure and umbrella bodies to ensure its continued growth and success.
“We will work with our partners and members in the South West to support them and ensure their interests are represented at both a local and national level.”

Consultation on Big Lottery Fund
A 12-week consultation is underway on proposed new policy directions for the Big Lottery Fund.
The Big Lottery Fund, which was set up in 2004, is the largest distributor of funding from the National Lottery to good causes and aims to bring real improvements to communities, and to the lives of people most in need.
The consultation invites views from a wide range of stakeholders which include the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector and other government departments.
The consultation closes at midnight on Friday 18 November 2011.

Communitybuilders begins search for six flagship regeneration projects
Communitybuilders, a fund that supports community-based and community-led organisations in England, opened this week. Awards will be made to up to six of the most promising examples of sustainable, community regeneration projects who will become flagship investees for the new era of the Fund, endowed to the Adventure Capital Fund (ACF) in March this year.
The Fund, managed on the ACF’s behalf by The Social Investment Business, will provide capital funding to community enterprises that have operated for at least 12 months and are looking to build their long term financial viability and increase their ability to deliver significant social impact in their communities.
The minimum that can be applied for is £250,000, the maximum £750,000. The ACF is looking to be a co-funder, with Communitybuilders awards making up between 20-50% of any individual project’s total costs, and is willing to act as both a first brick or a last brick in a funding package.

HOMETRUTHS is a cooperative with a social mission to support survivors of domestic violence to make choices which will increase their safety, and to raise awareness of the impact of domestic violence on our communities. The organisation is based in Swindon and Wiltshire and is the first co-operative in the UK to provide services to domestic abuse survivors. As well as offering direct services to domestic abuse survivors, HOMETRUTHS offer training, intervention work, consultancy, research and partnership working with statutory and non-statutory organisations to raise awareness of the impact of domestic abuse with organisations, employers and individuals.
