We hope you're enjoying the latest book in the SVN Series, "Dealing with the Tough Stuff: Practical Wisdom for Running a Values-Driven Business," by Margot Fraser and Lisa Lorimer. Filled with practical advice and real-life stories from SVN members, the book addresses the everyday challenges that every business owner will encounter, and the most difficult aspects of running a values-based organization. See below for details. With Thanksgiving just a week away, we want to wish you a joyful and healthy holiday with your friends and families. Thank you for supporting SVN - and all you do to build a more just, sustainable and humane world. In service, Deborah Nelson Executive Director | Network Updates | | SVN Fall 2009 Conference Wrap Up We had over 300 attendees join us in La Jolla, California in October for our 2009 Fall Conference. The Social Venture Network Book Series Dealing with the Tough Stuff Margot Fraser and Lisa Lorimer Dealing with the Tough Stuff is the brand new addition to the SVN Book Series. The book tackles the kinds of challenges every entrepreneur struggles with. How open and honest can you really be with your employees and still run an efficient business? At what point do you seek outside expertise? What do you do when things go terribly wrong? When is it time to leave? The authors and their fellow travelers share their experiences - not just what worked, but sometimes what spectacularly didn't. Birkenstock USA's founder Margot Fraser and Vermont Bread Company founder Lisa Lorimer have been there, and they're here to help. Together with five of their colleagues-including Stonyfield Farm founder Gary Hirshberg and former Ms. Foundation president Marie C. Wilson-they offer the kinds of personal insights and seasoned advice you just can't get in business school. It's like sitting down at the table with some of the nation's top socially conscious entrepreneurs. Click here to order your copy today. Helping Hand Rewards Makes Corporate Incentives Socially Responsible Although businesses are trimming budgets, often meaning slimmer recognition rewards for employees, Helping Hand Rewards is still connecting socially responsible businesses with the corporate incentive and rewards market. Created by SVN member Michael Arkes, president and CEO of Chicago-based Hinda Incentives, Helping Hand Rewards was featured in a Sales & Marketing Magazine article. The article lauded Arkes for connecting mission driven businesses and illustrated his business model by profiling several of his suppliers, including two SVN-connected businesses. 2007 SVN Innovation Award winner Priya Haji's World of Good supplied gifts through Helping Hand Rewards to Marriott's sales staff. Made in India, the hand-made bowls connected the staff to Marriott's own CSR initiatives in India. SVN member Julius Walls, CEO and President of Greyston Bakery, also got some ink for selling custom brownie gift packages through Helping Hand Rewards. When not making brownie bits for Ben & Jerry's, Greyston can put company logos on its Do-Goodie brownie box sets, sold via Helping Hand Rewards. | Members in Action | | Afropop has New Yorkers, and World, Bumping "I view our role as a trusted guide," SVN Member Sean Barlow recently told the NY Daily News of his internationally popular radio program Afropop Worldwide. Barlow has been pumping jams from Africa and beyond across the ether, on both the radio and internet, for over two decades now. The Brooklyn-based disc jockey was recently featured in the NY Daily News. Read the full article here. SVNers on The IC20 Investors' Circle has named the 20 most successful and impactful companies that have received funding through the Investors' Circle network since 1992. These companies stand as shining examples of the potential of social enterprise, proving that a focus on sustainability and social impact need not compromise profitability and that socially responsible investment can result in substantial internal and external return. Congratulations SVN Members: Guayaki (#2), Numi Tea (#4), SPUD (#5), Icestone (#12), Terracycle (#20). Click here for a complete list. World of Good Keeps the Goods Flowing Despite the tough economic climate, World of Good, founded by 2007 SVN Innovation Award winner Priya Haji, has continued to provide a marketplace for fair-trade crafts through innovative and evolving business and marketing models. Priya's efforts were recently profiled in the San Francisco Chronicle where she explained, "in a recessionary environment, the purchasing power of customers and their choices are more important than ever." SVN member Don Shaffer, CEO of RSF Social Finance, added: "World of Good is a shining example of a fair-trade organization functioning at a very high level as a business and having a tremendous social impact." Non-Profits as Incubators for For-Profit Endeavors A recent New York Times article on the growing trend of non-profit organizations spinning off for-profit business featured three different SVN members. 2007 Innovation Award Winner Brenda Palms Barber of North Lawndale Employment Networks spoke about her social enterprise Sweet Beginnings which now sells its urban honey and natural body care products to large customers like Whole Foods. SVN member Michele McGeoy told the Times how her venture, Richmond Solar, is "a win-win situation" by getting people out of poverty and off of coal. Meanwhile, SVN member Phaedra Ellis-Lamkins of Green For All said, "these ventures are paving the way for mainstream business to integrate the concept of green jobs into everyday practices."
