Social Enterprise Coalition activity Social Enterprise Day 2009 Social Enterprise Day, a national day to promote and celebrate social enterprise, takes place next Thursday 19th November. It is part of Global Entrepreneurship Week, so to see what events are happening, or register your own, please go to http://www.gew.org.uk. To mark the occasion the Coalition is unveiling the results of the largest survey ever undertaken on social enterprise. The research will give brand new insight into the sector, and provide data on its performance, scope and outlook. Also taking place on Social Enterprise Day is a reception at No 10 for social enterprise at which the winners of the England heat of the Social Enterprise Awards will be announced and celebrated. The shortlists for all four nations were released last Monday and can be found on the Social Enterprise Awards website. Once the winners from England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales have been announced, the public will be invited to get voting online to decide the UK's overall winners. Details for that will be shared next week. Finally the Coalition is a partner for the Guardian's social enterprise conference taking place in Birmingham. Our chair, Claire Dove, and head of policy, Ceri Jones, will be two of the speakers at the event which will focus on the role social enterprise can play in delivering public services. More information on this event is provided below. Various Coalition staff will be tweeting on the day to report about the events they are attending and the work they are doing so if you're not already following us sign up to do so now! http://twitter.com/SE_Coalition Manifesto workshops In the run-up to the next election, the Social Enterprise Coalition will be producing a social enterprise manifesto. We would like to hear your thoughts and ideas on what we should ask from the political parties. As such we have been hosting a series of workshops across the country to gauge views and tell you more about our plans for the social enterprise manifesto. We also aim to influence the political parties' own manifestos over the coming months. The next, and final, workshop is taking place at CAN in London on 17th November The workshop is open to all Coalition members. To register visit the Social Enterprise Coalition website. Call for good commissioning practice The Coalition is part of the National Programme for Third Sector Commissioning Partnership. Our role within this is researching good practice and developing detailed guidance on commissioning from social enterprises. We are therefore looking for excellent examples of how commissioners have used innovative ways to get greater value from their commissioning. This could include the creation of new social enterprises, the use of community benefit clauses, building capacity and user involvement. If you have had a positive commissioning experience you would like to share; or are a commissioner with a creative track record, please contact ceri.jones@socialenterprise.org.uk. Funding future jobs in your social enterprise The Social Enterprise Coalition is interested to know more about the plans of social enterprises to create jobs over the coming months. What you have to say will help to inform our policy position. The Coalition is especially keen to learn more about your experiences in relation to the Government’s Future Jobs Fund, whether or not you have applied. The survey should take no more than five minutes of your time, and we'd be grateful to hear from you. http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=dN_2fy6ZKkTQRJxEnFJC8xjA_3d_3d East Midlands Social Enterprises: Winning with 2012 The Social Enterprise Coalition presents this free event for social enterprises in the Midlands to discuss the opportunities presented by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and how social enterprises in the region can take part in the delivery and legacy of the Games. Following input from Coalition members the report stresses that: - There are opportunities for social enterprises to help in demand, as well as the supply, side of secure low carbon electricity.
- Social enterprises contribute to the reduction of both energy demand and overall carbon emissions in several ways beyond renewable generation: they better engage communities through community level interventions, through various degrees of involvement from being locally based and trusted to community ownership, and so are well placed to deliver behavioral change programs.

This has garnered the sector some interesting and high profile media coverage. Here is a selection of just some of what has appeared in the news this week. On Tuesday, the Minister for Work and Pensions Yvette Cooper MP and her Shadow Theresa May MP discussed social enterprise on both Radio 4’s Today Programme (from 08:10am) and BBC 2’s Newsnight. Social enterprise also featured prominently in David Cameron’s speech on 'Big Society', delivered as the Hugo Young lecture at the Guardian on Tuesday. The address focused on funding social entrepreneurs to franchise successful social programmes. A piece in yesterday's Guardian in response to this speech gathered some opinions on the key points. Amongst the contributors was Social Enterprise Ambassador Peter Holbrook, and you can read what he had to say here. And finally, also in yesterday's Guardian, an article on a John Lewis style partnership model for public services which would allow staff and users to control schools and hospitals - an approach which Labour is planning to make a central plank of their general election manifesto. Read the story here.
