What is Social Entrepreneurship?

Statement of Faith
You can find other "Market with Meaning" but you definitely want to see "Profit with Purpose".

Social Enterprise, Where Are You?

December 1st is World AIDS Day. It serves as an important reminder that HIV and AIDS are global realities. In some way, however large or small, HIV/AIDS touches most of us. We have friends, family members, or colleagues who are HIV+. We see celebrities championing HIV/AIDS awareness. Or we work with affected communities. HIV/AIDS has not gone away. There are many things that still need to be done.

According to UNAIDS estimates, there are now 33.2 million people living with HIV, including 2.5 million children. During 2007, 2.5 million people became newly infected with the virus. Around half of all people who become infected with HIV do so before they are 25 and are killed by AIDS before they are 35. These are daunting figures.

Among those countries particularly affected by HIV/AIDS, India is a special case - with the primary mode of transmission from husband to wife. According to the most recent data, compiled from 2007 figures and following the most recent National Household Survey, the estimate of HIV prevalence in India stands at 2.5 million. While a large gross number, the prevalence rate among adults in India ages 15 to 49 is a mere 0.3%.

In tune with the theme for World AIDS Day 2009 - 'Universal Access and Human Rights' - global leaders have pledged to work towards universal access to HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and care - recognizing these as fundamental human rights. But social enterprise needs to step up to the table. While there is much activity around prevention, treatment, and care in the traditional NGO sector, we at Beyond Profit are always on the lookout for innovative and sustainable market-based solutions to lessen the scourge of HIV/AIDS, both in India and globally.

Podcast: Praseeda Kunam, Woman Entrepreneur

At Beyond Profit, we hold female social entrepreneurs close to our heart (probably because we are a team of mostly women!). Microfinance is a field in which women have long been a majority of customers, but a minority of the leaders. Praseeda Kunam is an exception, a pioneering woman who launched and runs her own microfinance institution. Praseeda left the job market after getting her MBA to start Samhita Community Development Service, which serves poor women in Madhya Pradesh, a particularly impoverished state in India.

In this podcast, hear Praseeda speak about the challenges of being a woman entrepreneur in the financial inclusion space, the role of technology in the rapid expansion of Samhita, and the road ahead for her organization and the sector.

Praseeda was the winner of the Srijan 2008 "Most Promising Business Idea Award." The Srijan Microfinance Forum recognizes emerging and innovative microfinance initiatives in India and serves as a platform for public debate about some of the sector's most pressing issues.

Beyond Profit Issue 2: Fresh off the Press

Charities: Following the Money Trail

You practically have to be born with a halo and wings in order to meet the currently accepted characterization of a "social entrepreneur." By setting the bar so high, are we actually preventing the entry of a diverse set of changemakers? Gabriel Brodbar, Director of the Catherine B. Reynolds Foundation Program in Social Entrepreneurship at the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at New York University, offers a new framework for thinking about the roles of social changemakers.

Today, more companies than ever before are recognizing the significance and value of integrating CSR into all aspects of their business operations and decision-making processes.
