FYI: And the winner is...

"When you do the common things in life in an uncommon way, you will command the attention of the world." George Washington Carver

What is Social Entrepreneurship?

Statement of Faith
You can find other "Market with Meaning" but you definitely want to see "Profit with Purpose".
I personally "Believe in Kingdom Transformation" because I know there is only ONE "Life for Significant".

SSIR Honored With Two FOLIO Awards!

The Stanford Social Innovation Review received two 2009 FOLIO: Magazine Ozzie Awards.

The Fall 2008 issue of SSIR received the Silver Ozzie Award for Best Redesign, Association/Nonprofit. The magazine also took home the Bronze Ozzie Award for Best Overall Design, Association/Non-Profit.

FOLIO Awards are prestigious honors within the magazine publishing industry, and magazines from all over the country compete for them. Both achievements are significant recognition of the Stanford Social Innovation Review, which, earlier this year, also received a Maggie Award from the Western Publishing Association.

FOLIO's annual Eddie & Ozzie Awards recognize excellence in editorial content and magazine design. More than 2,200 entries were submitted in this year's industry competition. Other Ozzie Award winners this year included Time, Fortune, and Harper's Bazaar.

New Feature in Winter Issue:
Endowment for a Rainy Day

By Burton A. Weisbrod & Evelyn D. Asch

Judging from media accounts, U.S. nonprofits are facing unprecedented, if not catastrophic, financial distress because of endowment losses. Hiring is being frozen, facility maintenance is being deferred, programs are being dropped, performance seasons are being shortened, and construction projects are being cut back or even halted. As the president of Harvard University, Drew Gilpin Faust, put it when defending her decision to sharply reduce expenditures following a 30 percent drop in the value of the school's endowment, "Tinkering around the edges will not be enough."

Harvard isn't the only institution making dramatic cuts in response to a falling endowment. >>Continue reading this feature

Rosetta Thurman: Why Gratitute is Good for You

Every once in a while, I'll pick up the phone and call my grandmother in Ohio before she has the chance to call me and ask why I haven't contacted her in over a week. As soon as she picks up the phone, I immediately start singing the lyrics to Stevie Wonder's hit song, "I Just Called to Say I Love You." It's a beautiful melody with this catchy chorus:

I just called to say I love you
I just called to say how much I care
I just called to say I love you
And I mean it from the bottom of my heart

I sing the entire chorus as she starts chuckling on the other end of the phone. By the time I'm done, I know she's making that sentimental Grama face that says she's happy and about to cry. I ask her how she's doing, and I actually listen—no matter what I'm doing, no matter how many deadlines I'm sitting on. This is my way of expressing gratitude to my grandmother. This is how I tell her "thank you." >>Continue reading this post
