Thank you, Samasource supporters. Everyone on this list has contributed in some way to our success by spreading the word about our mission, bringing work to the people we serve, and contributing time and money. We're excited to see what all of us can do together, next. We've made great progress since our Fall newsletter. Read on for an update on our programs and to learn more about how you can help. Sincerely, The Samasource Team Join Mission 4636 for Haiti In the wake of the earthquake in Haiti, Samasource joined a group of organizations to establish a free emergency number (4636) for relief efforts. People on the ground in Haiti can now text requests for medical care, food, water, and shelter from any Digicel / Comcel-Voila device and receive aid. Through the "Mission 4636" service, SMS request data is collected and accessed by thousands of volunteers like you. Volunteers translate requests in Creole and French to English, and enter the messages into our unique online form. This added information allows this flood of SMSes to be prioritized and distributed it to various NGOs on the ground, including organizations such Ushahidi Inc., International Red Cross, Person Finder, InSTEDD, & the Thomson Reuters Foundation. Mission 4636 is made possible with our partners Crowdflower and FrontlineSMS. Together we've been able to translate over 18,000 emergency texts to date, forming a critical piece of infrastructure for relief efforts in Haiti. With the help of supporters in 76 countries, income from these microjobs has yielded an increase in wage for workers in Kenyan refugee camps by 800%. The new GiveWork app will: - Enable new kinds of mobile work (such as using the iPhone camera to verify places and situations)
- Let you spread activism to friends and through Facebook Connect
- Allow for new ways to generate donations and income for Samasource workers on the ground
- Bring in additional labor pools in Haiti, Asia and additional regions in Africa
"Digital supply chains represent the future of work," said Leila Chirayath Janah, founder and CEO of Samasource. "We've seen an explosion of literate people with access to technology across the developing world. With Give Work, for the first time in history, people who have been disconnected from the formal job market can use inexpensive netbooks and cell phones to do work and get paid for it." We are "Netexplorateurs of the Year" An international panel of experts selected Leila Janah of Samasource and Lukas Biewald of Crowdflower to receive "Netexplorateurs of the Year" Award for the the GiveWork iPhone application, demonstrating "promising digital initiatives." Netexplorateur is an independent global observatory for information and analysis on the issues in the ongoing digital revolution. The goal of the organization is to detect initiatives in terms of new uses of digital technology, and to spread knowledge and understanding of the related trends.
