Introducing TED Fellow: Durreen Shahnaz

Having begun her career working at Grameen Bank in Bangladesh, Durreen Shahnaz then moved to work at the World Bank in Washington. She then dabbled in the private sector, working as an investment banker at Morgan Stanley in New York and at Merrill Lynch in Hong Kong. Now, she runs Impact Investment Exchange, a social stock exchange for Asian social enterprises to raise growth capital. She is also head of the program on social innovation and change at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore.

How exactly do you plan to change the world?

I will change the world by creating a social stock exchange—Impact Investment Exchange—where investors will evaluate businesses in a new way, placing as much importance on the social impact of the enterprise as on its financial returns. Just as microfinance institutions have raised millions from poverty by giving them access to credit, Impact Investment Exchange will enable thousands of Social Enterprises to raise capital and expand their impact to help millions more.
