But for millions of people living in rural Africa, more often than not, an ambulance will never arrive. In our latest video on RidersforHealthTV Gambian health worker Ansumana Drammeh explains the difference Riders for Health have made to health care in his country. ‘Before Riders for Health, sometimes the ambulance had a breakdown. Our vehicle was off the road for almost five months,’ he recalls. The idea that towns and villages would be left without any ambulance for almost half a year would be a major scandal in the developed world. But for Ansumana it was a reality. Since February 2009 Riders have made sure that each health centre in the Gambia has all the motorcycles and ambulances they need to give the country the potential to cover the entire country. And because Riders maintains the vehicles properly, they are always available when they are needed. This has made a huge difference, as Ansumana explains, ‘Anytime you need the ambulance the service is always here. That’s a big change. When you see our records, you will see a big change in terms of health coverage.’ You can see the full interview with Ansumana by visiting www.youtube.com/ridersforhealthTV. The cards have been left blank for your message and a pack of five cards of the same design is only £3.00, or for just £5.50 you will get a pack of ten cards which includes two designs. You can visit our online shop now by clicking here. By purchasing a pack of greetings cards you will be spreading awareness of how Riders for Health are helping health workers in Africa reach isolated communities with regular health care. Riders fundraising and communications manager, Rachel Harrington, explains why this is so important, ‘We hope that soon everyone will understand the importance that reliable motorcycles and four-wheeled vehicles play in delivering health care, especially in rural areas. If you don’t have transport, health care just won’t reach the people who need it, and if you don’t maintain vehicles correctly and train people how to use them safely they will quickly break down. The sooner everyone realises how important this is, the sooner the problems will be solved across Africa. By buying a pack of our new greetings cards you really are helping us to raise awareness of this vital issue, as well as helping us to get more health workers on the road.’ You can also help to support our work and make a huge difference to people’s lives in Africa by sending a gift donation to a friend or colleague. Running around the world for Riders As someone who works in an intensive care unit, Az Heydari is used to lifesaving medicine, but now she is taking on a whole new challenge to help deliver health care in Africa. She has decided to support Riders for Health by setting herself the amazing challenge of running around every single MotoGP track in the 2010 season. She will be completing all the circuits in just one month, which she hopes will be November 2010. To help prepare her for her mammoth task, Az has set herself another goal, the Paris Marathon! Az first got the idea to run around all the MotoGP circuits when a friend introduced her to MotoGP. She loved the motorcycles and in turn heard about Riders for Health and our lifesaving work across Africa. Before learning about Riders she admits that, like many people, she had simply not thought about the importance of transportation. ‘Riders for Health really struck a chord with me for one main reason,’ Az explains. ‘I had never really thought about delivery of medicines or health care to those who need it, and how difficult that must be. Like a lot of people I thought it enough that the care was set up and the medicines were available. And then I remembered a documentary I once saw, of a dying baby, in Africa. The mother had to borrow horrendous amounts of money, and travel for almost two days, only to be told it was too late, but that had the baby received earlier intervention, it would have survived.' Since finding out more about the problems faced by health workers every day and how Riders is helping, Az has decided to spread the message that motorcycles really do save lives. Aiming to raise £15,000 towards our work, Az has already received permission from ten of the 18 circuits. And, of course, everyone at Riders wishes Az the best of luck for her challenge! You can find out more about Az’s challenge and help her to reach her target by visiting her JustGiving page at www.justgiving.com/pablo46.
