Support for Social Enterprise Charter continues to grow

The Social Enterprise Charter 2010 has now been signed by over 60 current and prospective MPs.

The Charter is part of the ongoing efforts of the Social Enterprise Coalition to build support for social enterprise amongst politicians. In the run up to the 2010 election, we are asking current and prospective parliamentarians to sign up to Charter to recognise and support the work of social enterprises across the UK.

The Coalition is working in partnership with the regional social enterprise networks which are helping to lobby MPs in their area to pledge their support for social enterprise.  We hope to have at least 100 MPs on board by the time of the general election on May 6th.

Latest signatories include

They join a list that includes David Cameron MP, Leader of the Conservative Party, Nick Clegg MP, Leader of the Liberal Democrats Party, and Caroline Lucas, Leader of the Green Party.

If you’d like to help us to get even more politicians to pledge their support to social enterprise, please download our campaign pack which will help you with everything from emailing your local candidates to getting coverage for your social enterprise in your local newspaper.

To see the full list of charter signatories and to download the campaign pack, visit the Coalition website.

Coalition coverage of the General Election 2010

The Coalition has this week been examining the manifestos of the main political parties to better understand what each of them plan to do to support social enterprise if they are elected to form the next Government.

To find out what each of the parties had to say about social enterprise, and to read reaction to each from Peter Holbrook, visit the Social Enterprise Coalition website.

Brown and Cameron visit social enterprises on the campaign trail

With the General Election campaign now in full swing, the party leaders have been on the road meeting voters and visiting organisations through which they can talk about their key interests.  This has lead both Gordon Brown and David Cameron to make visits to social enterprises in the last week - evidence of the key role the movement has in the 2010 campaign.

Last Thursday 8 April Gordon Brown visited Bromley-by-Bow Centre (BBBC) in the east end of London.  The Prime Minister and his wife were at the Centre for over an hour and met with staff, patients and many of the local people who come to the Centre for classes, advice and the numerous workshops and activities.

BBBC is run by Social Enterprise Ambassador, Sam Everington, and has long been an example of the potential of social enterprise to significantly improve services for people in deprived communities.

And on Tuesday 14 April, David Cameron paid a visit to Coalition members Women Like Us to talk about the importance of hiring flexible and part-time staff. The Conservative leader met with women who have successfully found work through the award winning-social enterprise along with clients and staff, to hear their views on how to make flexible working a viable reality in the UK.

Women Like Us connects employers to talented and experienced candidates from a range of different career backgrounds, who are all looking for part-time work. To date, it has recruited for 1,500 employers in the capital, and has worked with many third sector organisations, including Divine Chocolate, The Charity Technology Trust and autism charity TreeHouse.

Welsh Social Enterprise Coalition appoints first Chief Executive

John Bennett has been appointed the first Chief Executive of the newly formed Welsh Social Enterprise Coalition.

The Welsh Social Enterprise Coalition, which was officially launched at the Voice10 conference in February, will represent the social enterprise movement in Wales and aim to support its growth.  It is being backed with financial support from the Welsh Assembly Government.

John Bennett said: "I am flattered, excited and indeed honoured to be appointed as the Coalition's first CEO."

To take on his new role John will be stepping down as managing director of the award winning Pack-IT, a position he has held for over 16 years.  Since his appointment in 1994 John has grown the business from a very modest beginning to a group turnover of over £1 million - a feat that was recently celebrated when Pack-It won a UK wide Social Enterprise Award.

Social Justice Minister Carl Sargeant said: "Creating the Welsh Social Enterprise Coalition, and appointing John Bennett as chief executive are important steps in implementing the Welsh Assembly Government's Social Enterprise Action Plan.

"John Bennett has a wealth of experience in the social enterprise field, and I am confident that he will bring energy and enthusiasm to this crucial new role."
