MFI Founder is First Pakistani Woman to Earn Vital Voices Global Leadership Award Roshaneh Zafar, managing director of Kashf Foundation, became the first woman from Pakistan to earn the Vital Voices Global Leadership Award for Economic Empowerment. The Vital Voices Global Leadership Awards honor and celebrate women leaders worldwide that work to strengthen democracy, increase economic opportunity, and protect human rights. Roshaneh was honored at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., in March. Since she started Kashf Foundation in 1996, the MFI has lent $225 million to one million female entrepreneurs. The MFI services 295,000 clients annually. Roshaneh recently served as a delegate for President Obama’s Presidential Summit on Entrepreneurship. Back to top Solutions for the Poorest Program Tests Innovative Approach to Microfinance In April, our Solutions for the Poorest (SfP) team began working with BASIX, an Indian MFI, to test the financial and social impact of an integrated approach to microfinance. This approach will not only provide loans but other services India’s poorest households need to establish businesses and improve their lives. This project’s pilot will launch in Bihar, India, in August and will reach up to 200 households. Luckshmi Sivalingam recently joined the SfP team as Program Officer, helping the team answer key questions about reaching the poorest and helping local organizations effectively design services for these people. Meet Francisco Guia: Inspiring Giving Within the Hispanic Community Francisco Guia and his wife have been Grameen Foundation donors since 2006. When he heard our President and CEO Alex Counts speak in Miami, Francisco was moved to do more. This year, he founded PhilanthroGuia to inform, educate, and promote charitable giving within the Hispanic community in the United States. Francisco has invited Alex to deliver the keynote address at the first PhilanthroGuia event this fall. Originally from Venezuela, Francisco believes in giving to organizations working to alleviate poverty in Latin America. Over the years, we’ve facilitated $13 million in local currency financing throughout the region, reaching more than 270,000 people. GF President and CEO to Speak at First Ever Social Development Conference in Hong Kong Grameen Foundation President and CEO Alex Counts will speak at the 2010 Joint World Conference on Social Work and Social Development in Hong Kong. This first ever consortium, held June 10-14, offers a unique platform for more than 2,000 professionals, academics, practitioners, social planners, policy makers, and advocates to meet, exchange, and develop an action agenda for social work and social development in the next decade. The International Association of Schools of Social Work, the International Council on Social Welfare, and the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) are organizing the event. |
